The fact that you can do a full start-up checklist in a demo is WILD and really bodes well for the full release.

At the 34:30 mark, for the Field Coil strength, when you were wondering what 'T' stood for, I think it would refer to 'Tesla', which, along with the generally more useful unit 'Gauss', is used as a measure of magnetic field strength. (1 Tesla is 10,000 Gauss.)

Loved the comments about topsiders and first on, last off! Also, as a former EM and electrical engineer: it's a matter of potential starting torque on equipment resulting in higher initial power draw before it returns to normal. Turn too many auxiliary loads on at one time, and you're risking exceeding the current/ power limits of your protection systems or devices.

Regarding your comment about why you don't want to apply a full electrical load all at once when powering up, that's another way that pipe flow and electrical flow make great analogies for each other. Much like the "water hammer" you mentioned when firing up the pumps, there's a similar principle at play when applying the electrical load. Closing a relay is much like opening a valve. Also, for the sake of completion, one item missing from your checklist once things are online is cutting the output feed from the startup capacitors.

@@devinhorner2358 the words you're looking for are inrush current. TLDR: a lot of motory / capacitor things take a huge amount of current to spin up, but much less to maintain. Can be modeled with simple curves to make things seem a lot more realistic.

In one of the maintenance jobs I learned to do many years ago, the maintenance supervisor described it like this. "Think of the electrons in the wire like water molecules, and the wire like a pipe. If you shove too many molecules into the pipe, it can cause all sorts of issues, likeliest being it bursts the pipe, wires and systems are basically the same." It took me a bit back then to noodle it out, but it's a great analogy, and really makes you think about how things are so similar.

hi Devin, the T unit for the coils are probably Tesla, it's the measuring unit of the magnetic flux density.

Great episode Devin, this was excellent.. my brother in law's sister sends her complements because she claims it's like.. in her words.. "Serving aboard the starship Enterprise", I like this game a lot because it is indeed.. just like Star Trek.. especially when you take into account the engineering scenes in TOS and TNG. Once again, great to think this hopefully humanity's future ahead, the ambience of hearing the engineering and engines must be incredible in regards of your character resting. Great episode Devin, stay safe and happy gaming mate 👍

one thing I would expect from a true cold and dark startup is that the start capacitors got discharged below minimum then you would connect the emergency solar or shore power through the shuttle that ferried the poor engineer to one of the battery banks (or to the capacitors if that becomes possible) and then waiting for that to get enough charge to initiate the reactor

So if emergency lighting is off, what is the white light in the ceiling everywhere? Why not carry a flash light in a truly dark ship? I wouldn't call the first 30 seconds "cold and dark"

Around 15:00 one valve on each pump is kept open. I think this is not poor mechanical procedure. If you shut both valves when the fluids and pumps are very cold the pressure will build up when the fluids warm to room temperature. Maybe breaking the pump housing. Opening one valve the pressure can flow away to the system. One valve is still shut so the system is still shut.
@devinhorner2358
@devinhorner2358 2 ай бұрын
That's a good point, I'm not used to thinking of the extreme temperature component. Some valves have built in pressure relief but we don't know what kind of valves these are, or if the pump itself has a some kind of vent. I think I'd still want to shut the outlet and leave the inlet open to avoid accidental pressurization of the line. And of course for any maintenance, 2-valve isolation is required. But of course it's all personal preference here because the game won't penalize you either way
@striehassus
@striehassus 2 ай бұрын
Im not used to extreme temperatures too, im aa engineer on a dredger. But i have seen some problems like this with gasoil with a temperature rise of only 30 degrees celsius. Not breaking anything but i can imagine the pressure build up from fluid to gas and 290 degrees. The shaft seals are not made for that i think. But im never worked with systema like this. Offcourse you want to close valves for maintenance but there should be some way to get the pressure out safely like with a minimess connection. I dont like to work on a pump thats -270 degrees😅

@@devinhorner2358 but I like thinking about thes kind of things, thanks for thinking along. Maybe a little bit too deep for a game though. For the game im mostly interested in how they will implement the damage control, would love a game that needs quick thinking solutions

@@striehassus Wow, a dredger! That's got be an experience. Yeah, I think its fun to thought-experiment too. I think this is the kind of game where you can have a lot of head canon that explains stuff and how you want to operate the plant. Eventually there's going to be an official tech manual, so I'll be interested to pore through that

A lot of switching just for start up and running power...... Can we really design our own ship once this game comes out?? I'd like to move equipment and rooms around that makes sense to me.
@devinhorner2358
@devinhorner2358 2 ай бұрын
No ship designing, at least to begin with, but there is an engineering control room that is currently empty. It would seem likely that some kind of Electrical Plant control panel would be in there for remotely connecting a lot of these breakers. The local control would remain for damage control, probably. Alternately, it seems like AI crew will perhaps handle the running around if you don't want to worry about it.
@Eytaris
@Eytaris 2 ай бұрын
At first, I agreed with you, then I put a bit of thinking in it, while simpler and more centralized startup design would be nice, that would defeat the purpose of checking the good working of the equipment on startup, I think. Of course, Chief Horner shouldn't have to run the decks to energize and check everything, I think he would be at his office, remotely double-checking the checklist being done by his crew and personally checking a few critical components, but it's still nice of him to show the ropes to the new ratings and ensigns.

Yes, once the entire ship is complete and every system is finally in place they'll have to add all those things in an order that makes sense. The new design should be included in the next tech demo update which may be as soon as a couple of weeks. I'll most likely add to my own procedure until the official one come out
