After learning French and Spanish, I decided that the first step to learn a language is to nail the pronunciation. So learn the alphabet and all the sound combos first. If I can pick up any book and be able to say any word in it, then I’m golden because if I know how to say it, then I can recognize it when I hear it, and I can speak with confidence as well. After that it’s just vocabulary and grammar.

Did you learn one language at a time or how did you learn them(time limit /how long)? After how long should we move into learning the next language? How did you do it ?

English was the first language I learned. I started learning French years later and could say learning English didn’t help at all. All I heard when listening to French was a string of sounds. It took me years to be able to hear individual words. When I got to B1 in listening, I started to learn Spanish, and I immediately could hear individual words in Spanish, just like in French. When I improved in my Spanish listening skills, I surprised to find my French listening skills also improved. So I would say move to a new language at B2-C1 level and hopefully your listening skills will still carry over to the new language. Don’t wait until C1-C2 because your ears might return to normal like my case with English.

1. Pick a language 2. Buy a book to learn it 3. Create plan to study it for 2 hours a day and reach native-level fluency after 3-5 years depending on the language 4. Give up after one month
