Start making ambient music on the microKORG

In this video tutorial, I will show you how to make ambient and noise soundscapes with the Korg microKORG. These textures, drones, and noise walls can hold their own for recording or add to your overall composition.
Turn off Write Protection 0:48
Initialize a Patch 1:12
Writing a patch 1:25
Set Oscillator 1 to a Digital Wave 1:52
Set the Mod wheel to the Noise Generator 4:56
Setup the latched Arpeggiator 7:12
Turn on Amp Distortion 11:38
Final sound 12:28

For the mod wheel, I start by moving the Edit Select 1 knob to Pitch and bring the preset Vibrato Int from 5 to 0. I set the Source as MOD, the Destination as NOS, and the Mod Int to 63. I recently got one and was getting very frustrated. Now I'm inspired and assuaged. To answer your question/s: yes longer format is good, yes on the ambient, yes on the wall of noise distortion. Thanks for your vids. I bought a cheap Microkorg a few years ago, hated its factory sounds, but never bothered learning how to program it. I’ve learnt a lot, even in a couple of hours, from your tutorials.

Great video on using the MicroKorg to get started in Ambient music. It can be intimidating, especially with those who are less familiar with synths that have a full layout of physical knobs and switches in front of them. It's difficult to imagine what all can be done out of the box, let alone how to navigate the limited interface.

great video man. just wanna say though when you want to go out of the knob settings press shift instead of the patch bank, theres just less chance you slip and press lose your progress

The microKorg does not produce analog sounds, its a purely digital device. At best it emulates analog circuits, but there's nothing actually analog about it or its sound.

The MicroKorg is great, but anyone considering this against the JDX-1....the only advantage of the microkorg is it seems to have a little deeper bass (i almost broke a window once)..and it can run on battery. The JDX-1 is a different animal all together. You can make complete songs with it. BTW, I like most of the factory patches for the microkorg.

Thanks so much for this video man, I feel like there's way too little Microkorg content geared towards Ambient music. Microkorg is such a beast but I'm still trying to wrap my head around it. I agree that the factory presets are garbage, I can't wait to change them all to custom patches.

I'm not sure if thing applies to classic microkorg too but for my 2016 microkorg s: - to exit edit mode simply press shift button - to latch arpeggio without having to enter edit mode press and hold arp on/off button for a sec or two What you do with basic cutoff reso attack and release controls is simple but creative tip to move overall from what you hear in init into what you want to hear. I think I will adapt in in my regular step by step programming routine.

The Latch trick looks like it is for the S only. It didn't work on my synth. The exit edit button is shift for the old synth, but it doesn't seem to exit when editing the Arp A. or Arp B. selections on mine. Nice tips!

I like the way you are incorporating noise in your patches, it sounds wonderful. I think I might experiment more with the noise generator on my synths and maybe get a little creative modulating it using LFOs or envelopes.

I have heard good things about using the MK as a controller. But remember that it is 16 years old and that you may find something a little more modern for those specific tasks.

I noticed you were pressing 5 keys at once but my Microkorg is only a 4 voice, It cuts off the 5th note if i try. Does yours have 5 voice capability?? Love to hear your response

Hi! The microKORG has 4 voice polyphony meaning 4 notes can be simultaneously played in a chord. The difference in my video is that I have the Arpeggiator on. I can play every note on the keyboard at once and the MK will sound each note one after another. It's not playing multiple notes together, so it could play all 32 keys and even utilize 4 different octaves with the Range setting. I hope that helps and let me know if you have any more questions. How its possible to make a infinite loop on MicroKorg? Exactly how you did in the 8:00. Newbie question...sorry

That is the Arpegiattor. You turn it on with the button on the left-hand side under the volume. To keep it playing as a loop, you need to have your setting latch on. Turn the middle Edit Select 2 knob to Arpeg B. and turn Cutoff 1 knob so that latch turns "On." I start these steps at 7:18 - hope that helps and let me know if you have any more questions. Unfortunately, that is a limitation of this synth. It will only repeat the notes you play. There are some tricks with layers that I will show here at some point, but it won't be like having a guitar loop pedal where you can loop a bass line and then play a lead on top.
