The palpable singing chemistry of co-stars Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens elevated HSM’s “The Start of Something New” from popular show tune to radio hit. Fast-forward to 2019. Disney’s slyly reimagined High School Musical: The Musical: The Series has the new students of East High paying tribute to the original class. Olivia Rodrigo (Nini) and Joshua Bassett (Ricky), who play exes trying to rekindle their relationship (via the power of theater and song, of course), lead a fantastic cast and new wave of Disney stars. Philip Seven not at all. There is a part when both are singing the bridge, after the second chorus and Olivia goes higher. Joshua matches her pitch beautifully. He is able to harmonize perfectly. Joshua and Olivia’s voice complement each other great. I am very impressed.

They’re so natural. Their voices. Their connection. You can tell they really enjoy each other’s company and they’re comfortable with each other. In a dating way or friend way, they’re great together in whatever way they choose to be.

Cheshta Stypayhorlikson-Mendes Yea in an interview, Olivia explained that some of the memories he shared were improved but they were real memories they had together. Then the other parts were scripted. But Olivia’s reactions were real. I thought it was super cool and cute.

Disney did incredible casting. As someone who got the HSM 1, 2 & 3 as a DVD collection in 2008, the casting of HSMTMTS gives the same vibe of Nini and Ricky as Troy and Gabriella!

Every single time I can't stop smiling when they look at each other, it just makes me so happy, and they are wonderful singers, and I think they harmonize perfectly. I tried so hard not to ship these two and I promise it is so hard, but for now, I'm just going to go with them are awesome friends and they love each other as friends. I hope they always stay friends even when the series stops.

At 2:20 the big chord makes this song for me❤️❤️ Also when they say “we’d both be here tonight” at 1:23 with laughter it’s such a pure and wholesome moment. Might I also mention how at that part, the percussionist and the pianist, but especially the percussionist, both look so satisfied with that harmony and line. I love these two and their chemistry. considering this is live, they did really great. olivia's voice is what made this so different than the original imo, bcs both hers and vanessa's voice is very unique in an opposite way. josh's tone is similar to drew but josh sounds more youthful (?) i guess and more raw. he's already great tho and can only get better from here :)
