Start Point Lighthouse stands on one of the most exposed peninsulas in the UK. Located on the south side of Start Bay, near Dartmouth.
The Lighthouse, is is one of twenty nine towers designed by James Walker. and sits at the very end of the headland, and has guided vessels in passage along the English Channel for over 150 years.
James Walker designed Start Point Lighthouse in 1836 and it owes much to the "gothic" movement in architecture of the time, with its battlemented parapet. Two white lights were originally exhibited, one revolving and one fixed to mark the Skerries Bank. A fixed red subsidiary light still marks this hazard.
Open to the public in summer months, it is owned and operated by Trinity House. It has been designated by English Heritage as a grade II listed building.
The tall circular light house tower is 92 feet (28 m) high with a moulded plinth and pedestal stage and two diminishing stages above that.
