0:51 Pick Your Poison
2:18 The Important Bit
5:23 Wheelstands & Cockpits
7:12 Not Games, Simulators
IF you’ve been pondering over the thought of getting into sim racing recently, you need to drop everything, stop what you’re doing and watch this video because now is the perfect time to get into the hobby.
The first step of getting into the hobby is deciding which platform you would like to race on. Is it console or PC? PlayStation or Xbox? Before you do anything else, you need to answer these questions. You don’t want to buy an entire sim racing setup, only later to find out that it’s not compatible with your platform. Of course, if you already own one of these platforms, the decision is kind of a no-brainer if you want to go about the cheapest route. But, if you’re totally new to gaming in general, I would definitely recommend picking PC. Yes, a console is cheap, but in a couple years, you’re gonna want to switch to PC. It’s practically the course of nature. It’s simply the superior platform. So, buying a gaming PC from the get go may be a worthwhile investment.
But, if someone put a gun to my head and told me I had to race on a console, I would definitely chose the playstation. This is because on PS you get the Gran Turismo franchise, which is a far superior racing simulation as compared to Xbox’s Forza. It offers much better competitive racing, and a more realistic simulation. But if you are on console, you’re just delaying the inevitable of joining the PC master race. It has better sims, and you can even mod your racing sims, which I’ll cover a little later on when we discuss racing sims in more depth.
So, now you’ve picked your poison, it’s time to select a your peripherals. The wheel and pedals are the most important aspect of your sim racing setup. It’s true that most racing simulators are compatible with game pads, or even keyboards, and there are plenty of racers that use them. But at that point, is it even sim racing? If you do try to play racing simulations on either of these, you’re bound for a bad time. Racing simulations aren’t like your casual racing games, and they aren’t designed with gamepads or keyboards in mind. Meaning, you’re going to have a tough time controlling your car. You’re definitely going to want to buy a wheel.
The wheel I started out with 6 years ago was the Logitech G920. It also comes in the G29 variant, they’re practically identical, except the G920 is for Xbox, and the G29 playstation. Both are compatible with PC however. Anyway, the Logitech offerings are PERFECT for anyone wanting to get into sim racing on a budget. They cost around £300 or $400, and with that you get a durable wheel and a decent 3 pedal set. You can also throw in a H pattern shifter for a little extra, which is a worthwhile addon in my opinoin. It just means you won’t have to use the flappy paddles, and will actually have a realistic shifting action in anything other than race cars.
However, logitech recently came out with the logitech g923. This is their upgraded version of both the previously mentioned wheel. As far as I can tell, there isn’t much difference. If we disect the marketing mumbo jumbo, all you get is a slightly improved brake pedal and more vibrations through the wheel which really isn’t much. So, you can decide if you think this is worth the upgrade.
Much like the successor to the G29 being almost identical, the predecessor to it is again, almost identical. If you want to sim racing on an extreme budget, you can find logitech g27s second hand at a very reasonable price. Again, the g27 will offer an almost identical experience for under a ¼ of the price.
Now the other company that makes wheels for budget sim racers is called thrustmaster. They have a lot of models, which can become quite confusing. However, the models you should look out for are the T300, T150 or TMX. They’re all decent wheels, and range from cheaper than the aforementioned Logitech wheels, to more expensive. The main difference between the Logitech and thrust master wheels it the way force feedback is delivered.

i used to help run a sim league, had the full setup. i watched in amazement as my peers went to three screens and moving rigs. i did the opposite - i downsized. i now use a foldable stand, and a low end thrustmaster wheel and pedals. literally 1/10th of the cost of my initial G27 Obutto setup. Keep it simple. Your brain fills in the gaps...you dont need to go full everything.

I walk opposite the general flow of mob actions. I agree with you. But the steering wheel has got to be a good kit mechanically. A higher percentage of top spec audi are low skilled while some awesome drivers in nissan micras have better skills. A good tool helps but the person handling the tools makes the difference.

a definite difference between the g920/g29 vs the g923 is the new wheel's pedals are now 10 bit so they have more resolution so braking is a lil more dynamic. (the tech is in the wheelbase not the pedals and one can easily make their pedals 10 bit by getting the g29/920 pedal to usb adapter.)

while true, thrustmaster wheels are very expensive compared to a logitech wheel (this is a budget setup) QC is also very shotty on thrustmaster, had friends go through 3-4 wheels in a year before finally getting one that didn't fall apart right away. Good quality gear exists but it's gonna cost a lot more than what either logitech or thrustmaster ever provides.

You will literally not be able to notice any major difference in 8 bit and 10 bit on those pedals. The difference between 256 and 1024 might seem a lot but on those pedals? they just do not have the resolution for it to feel massive. Also anything above 10 or 12 bit is impossible to feel any difference even with Load cells. How do i know? I made my own Load cell+Hydraulic based pedals (based off a Huesinkveld Sprint and Ultimate design) and the difference between 8 bit and 10 bit is surely apparent on load cells (you still need some fine braking control to tell) but 12/16 and all? Yea no difference at all

FYI: I built my own home cockpit out of wood and wooden black laminate sheets for the final finish that cost me around 100$. I used an after market Honda Civic Si seat that cost me 20$ and around 200 screws. Finally, the planning was the hardest but my cockpit can be used for Race Sims, Flight Sims and space games like Star Citizen. I can use the wheel and pedals at the same time as the joysticks when it's set into the right configuration. I would suggest anyone to build their own cockpit if they can. They will really get a huge bonous out of it and it will cost a lot less. *** Forgot to mention*** My Cockpit is also compatible with things like the Next Level Motion PLatform that I do not own... but it's ready :P Cheers !!!

Honestly, I love beamng for rally because it adds the fear of crashing that's so absent in other games. Like clipping a curb in some sims might spin you out and lose time, it may even have your car take "damage". But in beam, youre now going to have to try finish the race with collapsed suspension, a punctured tyre and likely a damaged wheel to boot. Or even little things like clipping a hedge can realistically take out your radiator so you've got to worry about finishing the race before your car overheats. It's great.

Yeah, definitely wait. This era of sim racing gear is kind of lame compared to what it was a couple of years ago. Not very many mid range wheel / pedal setups at a reasonable price at the moment. I think most manufacturers are starting to look at direct drive wheel bases, and phasing out belt driven. Which is a shame, because the cost are going to continue to go up.

Yes, there are so many directions we can go for racing games. I have always been doing SIM racing on the PC and on the STEAM platform. One nice item besides the ones you mention in the video is using VR - many of the popular racing games now support this on the PC. This is not really a budget item or a necessity, but once you have used VR, you really don't want to go back to racing on the FLAT screen. Another visual FAD is using 3 displays for better visual driving. That gets costly also depending on display sizes. Thanks for the video.

always wanted to get into sim racing, but sadly it is always out of my budget. I did buy the Ferrari racing red letter edition wheel for 70 bucks . It was a 180 degree wheel with no feed back other than bungie system. Still enjoyed it, but even that was almost out of my budget lol. Things cost so much.

Cool video, my only issue was that in the sim racing world a 25$ sim is considered expensive, but then also they say to have any fun you have to get a 1000$ pc.

Honestly, I would just recommend people to look for used. Get a used T300RS and tighten the belt. It's really easy to do and you are good to go. Find some used decent TLCM, Fanatec V3, DC Simracing, Simforge Mark 1 or BJ Steel pedals for upgrade and/or Playseat Challenge (or if you have more cash on hand, a used AluRig). With enough searching and bargaining I got a full Rig with Direct Drive, proper Buttonplate, Alurig & Pedals on par with the Heusinkveld Sprint for ~1000€. That's still a lot of money, but it also shows you can save money, if buying smart.

4:31 and also the main difference is the fact that you can change your steering wheel, the pedals you have an option for a load cell from the factory, the shifter can be 2 modes H patern and sequential on the thrusmaster one. also but you mention it is the power delivery is about 23.7% stronger than the Logitech 920, also on the Logitech you can clearly hear the gears coging were the thrusmaster is silent but not completely silent. the t300 has software features to keep the motor cool the Logitech has a good set of starting pedals compare to the trustmaster .
@pandacocoa

You can't change the wheel on any of these, even the thrustmaster. For that you have to spend more on a higher end thrustmaster, fanetic, or other higher end wheel.

I have a g920, a e46 3setirs seat which reclines, moves forward does everything that a normal car seat would and a diy frame made from bent steel pipes, very good overall and cost me and my dad to build 600$ aud, pretty good (not including the e46, we had a spare seat bc the e46 is a project and thus had msport e90 seats which are superior to the normal 320d seate”

I've been playing on a new Logitech G920 for two days now. Totally new to any kind of sim racing or using a wheel/pedals but I bought the wheel for F1 2020 gameplay and after tweaking some settings around and adjusting the clamps properly to my desk (took a few google searches) it really is all I could ask for. As much as I wanted a more high end wheel like the T300RS I am happy with the choice I made. In a year, who knows? Maybe I regret my decision but for now I am very pleased with the G920 for a first time wheel/pedal user edit: PC

I have a Logitech 300GT with the 3 pedal setup and a TH8 shifter and an upgraded brake pad and it’s been great. I wish I could say the same for my Playseat Evolution frame. Terrible ergonomics make heel toe nearly impossible with the center frame design. The side frame with a shelf in the middle is the way to go like Next Level.

If one doesn't know if sim racing is something for you, consider to get the gear second hand. Often the prices will be down to 50%. Even pretty new stuff (2-3 months old) is sold for 2/3 of the original price. I got my GT-Omega wheel stand for 80€ instead of 130€.

Started out with T300RS/T3PA pedals/TH8A shifter/Wheelstand Pro all second hand for €250 (only had to buy the missing TH8A usb cable from TM) Bought an extra rim and modded it with an Acelith mod and wrapped the other in faux suede. Added 2nd hand CSL load cell pedals and a 2nd hand Oculus Rift CV1. (now I'm pretty much No VR No buy xD) Sold the lot at once (kept the upgraded pedals and VR). Bought a second hand CSW 2.5 + F1 V2 with APM. Bought the NXL racing DD stand on sale for €190. Then upgraded it with a Universal hub (and D-shape QSP rim) and SQ 1.5 shifter (on black friday sale). And a 2nd hand P100 rim for rally and some gloves. Sold the CSW 2.5 + P100 rim. Bought the CSL DD boost kit + CS magnetic shifter set of the UH. And bought a Sparco rim for Rally (but use the QSP rim for it now as the Sparco was a bit heavy) Bought a 2nd hand analog handbrake (the real converted to hall sensor, Chinese kind) Mounted my old 'racing' gaming chair on a (free) small frame with wheels to attach to the wheel stand to make a makeshift rig. Due to deals, buying/selling 2nd hand, I have a decent setup now. And if I would sell the lot now, I'd be hardly any money in, for a couple of years of enjoying it. My advice, buy 2nd hand and look out for deals. Sell your stuff when you've saved up a bit to upgrade and your current gear is still worth something. Don't start out with the cheapest stuff (below G29 or even including it) and if you do, make sure you can get it for an absolute bargain. And watch out, sim racing gear is a slippery slope! xD For instance, I would've gotten more for my CSW 2.5 if I sold it a month or 2 earlier, but less, a month or 2 later. But that would've left me without a wheelbase. With more competition and more affordable entry level direct drive wheels and better mid-range pedals, the future for beginners looks bright. If inflation and global pressures on production etc. don't persist or get worse, in a couple years there should be pretty affordable DD setups available on the 2nd hand market.
