The scary thing is that the shed that houses the gears looks like it's just about to collapse over the turbine itself 😬

This Thing has at best 5 kW. A single Kettle needs 1000 Watt, an Oven or Stove even 2-4 kW. You could power a single House with this Turbine but would have to watch the fuck out which Devices you switch on at the same Time. So using this Turbine for Hydroelectricity is a rubbish Idea.

The turbine itself was manufactured in 1949. Previously, another, smaller one was installed there. At the beginning of the nineties, it underwent a slight renovation. And about 7 years ago, she had wooden fingers in the gear replaced because the previous ones broke. And about every 10 years, overhaul of the upper bearing (thrust, disc).

Looks more like a Kaplan. I didn’t think the Francis was a low head turbine.
@adameno21612 жыл бұрын
Yes it is a Francis turbine. Most of the information on the internet says that these are high-headroom turbines. But they were also produced for low bleeds. And used quite often. From what I remember, the main difference was the rotor construction, the height and width ratio. And the speed of rotation. Currently, Francis turbines are not used for drops below 5m.

@adameno21614 жыл бұрын
Deriazy to do siłowni szczytowo-pompowych.

Reading some of your other comments you said it was part of an old grain mill operation. I find it interesting that it was left in place and that and able to spin freely like that. Here where I'm from unless there is a new owner who is going to use it right away; by law water powered devices such as this and sluicegates must be removed or at the very least permanently disabled for the safety of people with less brains than common sense.

What most folks mistake for HP is torque. HP is calculated by rpm. These old machines had low HP numbers because of low speed. But huge amounts of torque. That's the power of the technology at the time. Torque turned vast amounts of machinery, hence line shafting. Not fast, but tremendous twisting power. Remember an old steam engine at rest has the most torque/power applied to its wheels because the full force of the steam pressure is applied by the pistons is applied to the wheels. Now days we are mistaken by car engine HP numbers. High rpm, but low torque.
@johnpekkala69413 жыл бұрын
Wrong! HP is calculated by both torque and speed combined. The small take off wheel from this turbine have same HP value as the big wheel but at lower torque and higher speed. HP is simply a different unit for Power like Watts and 1 HP = 746W . It is based of the amount of work done per seecond. 1 watt = a joule/second of work. A low speed machine can have huge amount of HP if torque is high. The the other way around, is also true. A universal motor in say a power tool spinning at 30000 rpm have a quite low torque but uses the speed instead to still get a high wattage. A gearbox can then lower the high rpm from this motor and at same time it increases the torque by the same amount but the power of the machine in HP or Watts is same at both ends of the gearbox. Same amount of work is produced in total. Another very similar example to this turbine are modern hydro power plants using similar turbines that spin at at most maybee 500 rpm but each turbine can still output 100s of MW of electricity because the torque they produce is enormous.
