The choke goes a long way. Those old D's are pretty thirsty on a cold start.

I admire the kids determination... Not truly a cold start. Lack of winter jackets, mitts ,boots, and toques .😮

I remember when I bought my 1944 model D. Bought it at an auction. Went to pick it up the next day, no idea how it worked at all, so the old guy told me how. So being the 15 year old invinsable kid i wss, thought that would be easy. I couldnt even get a pop out of it. Then the 80+ year old owner came over, leaned his cane up against the tire and second flip he started it. I was like whattt😮. Learned qyickly its for technique then strength or speed.

Yep. After I learned how to start my 1937 A dual fuel, I talked my 5’ tall wife through it for her first time. You can’t “flip” the flywheel. Just pull it through and let the magneto impulse fire it. Usually when cold, bleed fuel till you get gasoline to carb, open compression relief petcocks, choke, crack throttle, pull through till it pops first time, choke off, pull through, close petcocks, and warm up before switching to tractor fuel. The day I sold it (bought Model 50) was the first, and only, time I ever managed to get choke off when it popped and keep it running after one pull. Hot - turn fuel off, put can over exhaust stack, walk away till it cools down, and then above.

Very much agree with you technique over strength or speed something this kid needs to learn yet

I was a 16 year old working on a farm in northern Montana in the mid 60's and I always remembered to park the tractor on a hill when I was done with it.

Where's the chain and running tractor or pick up?
@chrisheffernan66008 ай бұрын
Thanks for the video. The kid pulling it over must be exhausted. Crack the throttle open a bit, it will make it easier to start.
@boblackey17 ай бұрын
I think you are right. I've never started a D before but lots of times with an A and a G and have the throttle up more. About half way. Choke open and it should pop off second or third turn then close the choke and she usually is running about two more turns.

Just some advise, when you get on compression stroke you gotta follow through. If you stop half way through it bleeds off all your compression and floods. When you feel it getting hard, that's your time to reef hard!

Not much of an expert, but maybe try giving it a slight bit more throttle next time and make sure to rotate the engine over to the compression of either cylinder for an easier start :D
@keltonwright79 ай бұрын
Rolling a 501 cubic inch motor over compression is easier then it looks or sounds. My D starts great if you get going in less then 5 tries, if you pass that you might better give up and try another day
