Welcome to this beginner's guide to costuming fabrics! If you're interested in starting to sew your own costumes for LARP, cosplay or historical wear you've come to the right place. In this video, I'll go through the most popular fabric types for costumes and their pros and cons to help you choose the best materials for your next sewing project. I'll go over everything from the differences between natural and synthetic fabrics to cotton, linen, wool, jersey and more. Whether you're a complete beginner or an experienced costumer looking to expand your knowledge, this video has something for everyone.
If you are curious where I buy my supplies you can check out this writeup here: ko-fi.com/post/Where-I-buy-my...
And yes only after upload did I realise I misspelled linen during the video. Well, now you know the Dutch word for it.
My awesome new endscreen was commissioned from brenna-ivy.tumblr.com/tagged/my art!
And thanks to ‪@TextielstadNl013‬ for letting me film at their store! All fabric store footage and bolts of fabric that I didn't have at home were filmed there.

I'm curious did you use any not-necessary-meant-for-clothing fabric for your costumes? And I might've had too much fun with editing this outro... Anyway, do stick around till the end to see one awesomely drawn endscreen by Brenna-Ivy!

A nicely structured guide, and even a nice reminder for people who have been at this for longer. I work almost exclusively with natural materials, due to personal preferences (and general costume theming), but it's nice to get a reminder of the possibilities of synthetic materials. What you forgot to mention is that the burn-test method can also be used to make 'enhancements' to your costume. ... I mean... I would never set fire to fabric to make a costume look scorched / always have a slight burned smell hanging around the character..... Speaking of which, I definitely suggest performing those burn tests outside, if at all possible, with certain fabrics. Unless you enjoy the smell of burned hair (wool) or plastic (most synthetic materials) filling your house. And huzzah for the new end-screen! Moar blinky lights and sneks!

Sidenote as well is that synthetic materials are just a whole lot easier to get. Especially in regular fabric stores finding 100% wool is difficult. And regarding the burn test... eh, yea.. I maybe should have sorta slightly done that outside, there was a nice burned smell in the bathroom the entire rest of the day.

thank you for the guide! if you're still answering questions, what would you recommend for a sort of long, circle shaped traveller/wizard cloak that's supposed to look warm, but that would also be practical to wear to a con and not actually get incredibly hot?

Good question! Hmm, you could go for lined cotton. When you use a different colour for the outside than on the inside it will look like it has more body than it does. Alternatively you can look for something with a looser weave so wind can pass through. Although with that you do have to make sure it isn't too stretchy or the cape will warp under its own weight. Good luck with the project!

I am not an expert in allergies or textile contents, so take this with a grain of salt and double check. The fabrics I'd be most weary of would be fake leathers and other more rubber-y kinds. I'd also double check anything with elastics in it, like fabric used for cuffs. The fabrics least likely to be an issue would be things like 100% cotton, linen or wool.
