I went to an outboard engine school in the military. It was a pretty good school on everything dealing with outboards. Made a lot of money in San Diego after work and especially on the weekends.

Get a barrel plastic 55 gallon and cut it put a drain 3/4 in the bottom I use a hose cut barrel to hieght ensure water level over the intake fill and start. never throttle up pass 2500 rpm idle check for peeing Could be dirt dobbers in up the hose I sue a coat hanger to. Lean out

@@kencleg7721100% Use a Drum. Some brands are notorious for needing to be "in the water" to supply enough water to the pump.

@@kencleg7721also I've noticed with the Dobbers, if you just start it in the barrel a few times over a few days it usually will loosen and soften up the dirt. In salt water it will even cut thru that dirt even faster. Last time I was clogged about half way but took a few hrs in the water to unplug it all the way. Gotta run those motors !!!!

There nothing worse than having problems at the launch for the first time of the year! My most common one is forgetting to put the drain plug in, which since Wisconsin made it a law to remove it after each time on the water ive forgotten to put it back in 3 times!

I’ve been there once myself. Fortunately, my buddies son noticed almost immediately, and we only got a couple gallons in the boat! That is definitely a pain in the neck having to remove the drain plug every time in Wisconsin.

Why is that even a law ? But you definitely want to pull your plug and have your boat tilted to drain any rain etc.

Put the lower unit in a 30 -50 gallon plastic barrel, fill with water. Run engine. THIS will tell you if the water pump is working. Garden hose just pushes water through the engine.

Here on Cape Cod, we call them “Rabbit Ears”!! Our neighbors don’t love them, LOL but great way to burn off a few minutes of fog oil before putting in the water.

Best thing I ever did for my 60 yamaha was to start running nothing but synthetic oil and non-ethanol gas through it. I also installed a fuel-water separator filter. Those things really fixed my continued carb issues and hard to start issues I used to have with it.

Yeah use a barrel cause we put muffs on our moser and it pumped but we took it to the lake and the water pump was bad

Good thing I did this dirt dobbers deep had to pull the hose and put a wire up into the engine then it started peeing and yes u use a cut 55 gal drum

Also after a day on the bay to lessen salt buildup. I wash the boat and motor, then flush my engine with fresh water.

Everyone in the comments making excuses on why not to scare me. Something like this might be why my uncles Nissan Marine 115 has lasted almost 20 years with minimal issues. It’s cycled through before going to the water and the salt is cleaned out this same way after every outing.

Boat ramp is 3 minutes away from my house so I just head there, dump the boat in the water, and cuss as I get it started for the 1st time. Only had to go home once with an engine that refused to start.

When testing an outboard allways run it in a bin of water that way you will know if your water pump impeller is working, if you use muffs the hose pressure will give a false indication that cooling water is flowing. Also what the hell is is that Naps guy on about?

I recently decided that I didn’t like the earmuffs because they aren’t fool proof. Having the motor in a garbage can full of water is more reliable.

DO NOT give the motor any throttle with muffs on. You can experience runaway engine without a load on the propeller. The motor can exceed max rpm by several thousand, even pulling the ignition plugs off won't stop it, only pulling the fuel line off will stop it (and then what damage have you done)

@@mrdanger4851 They meant it will cut the hose when you put the engine into gear wise guy. Muffs can be installed from the front of the motor, works just fine. Stop trying to correct people that have no issues with doing things the way they do it.

@@mrdanger4851we're both right and wrong. I didn't pay attention that the muffs in the video have the hose on the side. The muffs I own have the hose directly down the middle, allowing water pressure on both sides of the muffs, and will interfere with the propeller, which will not work going from the propeller side. The muffs he use may be able to go in from the propeller side, HOWEVER, it will not always work going in through the propeller side because the metal bar may interfere with the propeller depending on the size of the lower unit and the brand. It's best just to do whichever way works better for the person using it and for the engine itself.
