For anyone else watching: get the bracket, upper bolt, then lower bolt first in that order. Then work to remove the battery wire and solenoid wire. It's easier that way.

I like the fact that you showed this from the point of view of the driveway mechanic, lying under a barely raised car instead of reaching up to a car on a lift.

Tip- unbolt and rotate the starter to gain better access to the battery and solenoid power connections. And, install these power connections before mounting the starter to the transmission bell housing, so much easier.

This is a really good thing you guys are doing. You not only show how to do it-- you also give tips like how you cobbled together extensions and how you used the jug for a pillow. And you didn't tell us how it was a piece of cake. I'd be tempted to pull the engine rather than do that swap. Mechanics really earn their money.

I took off both 14mm bolts and rotated the starter to make it alot easier to get to both electrical connections. Also no need to remove exhaust. Just need the right tools and patience

I also have done it removing the starter before the battery cable, seemed a lot harder to try to reattach the cable with it in place. I have done it without removing the exhaust and trust me it is a LOT easier to get it back in with the a-pipe out of the way. The first time I got lucky and it popped right into place, the second time I did this job I couldn't get it back in right until I took off the exhaust.

I have changed many starters in my life. Never had any problems aside from the occasional hiccup. This damn starter is by far the hardest one I’ve ever had to mess with. What an absolute nightmare. I think you said it best, “Hondas are usually really easy to work on, but this starter is a terror.” truer words were never spoken. Just a tip for anyone else, it’s not “completely necessary to remove the exhaust. However, removing the front passenger tire and splash shield is a must!

5.75 hrs I got this done.. plus the owner didn't want to tackle this gave him flat rate price cause this was one of 4 jobs on their car. Starter, Coil struts, rear shocks, and wheel bearings they opted out the brakes since there were replaced and still new. All in all took me 9hrs if I had bigger jack stand I would have lifted it for more clearance

Great video, helped me lots on my daughters car. Just a few tips I learned. I removed the 8mm bolt holding the bracket for the cables. Then removed the starter bolts and turned the starter to undo the cable plug and nut. Heaps easier

Thank you for the video. We replaced our 2008 civic starter. Not as smooth as you guys but we did it. I would love to see the out takes to your video. I wish manufacturers would go back to rear wheel drive vehicles. That would really clean up the engine compartment. Changing a starter should not be this difficult. 200lbs of parts crammed into a 5lb space. Thanks again for the video.

great video. I completed this job today. I removed the lower engine bracket as well which added some extra room . I wouldn't recommend doing it outside in the low 30's like I did., wearing a thick jacket was a royal PITA getting your hands into the places they needed to go. 10:56 That rather painful power steering return line clamp right under your wrist

I just did my 2006 Civic at 394k km. I've owned it since new. An impressive life span from the the original Honda starter motor. The bracket that holds the connectors comes off the alternator with a single small bolt. It might be easier for some people to remove that bracket rather than trying to remove the connectors from the bracket.

If a person attempts this at home on the driveway it's very difficult. If you can solve a Rubik's Cube you should be able to do this though. Civic's are great vehicles but the Corolla is much easier to work on.

That wiring harness is a nightmare. I got all those bolts off the starter easy as pie using extensions running out to the passenger wheel well. I got lucky getting the 12mm bolt off the electrical connection relatively easy and by feel but the harness seems like it isn't free so I can't get the bolt on by feel. I guess I gotta go back at it tomorrow and see if I can get the harness free. There's other videos where people put the electrical connections on right when they put the starter in the area of where it has to bolt in. That seems easiest and most logical. Then I'll just put the bottom bolt in and the top should guide in fine.

Question, I removed the exhaust (made my life way easier) but as soon as I finished it and put it back together, I started to throw a P0135 Heater Circuit bank 1 sensor 1 code. Is it common for an O2 sensor to trigger that when removing the portion of the exhaust?
@LemurMonitors
@LemurMonitors 4 жыл бұрын
This code gets logged if the car detects that the O2 sensor heating element is using abnormally low current with the heater on, or abnormally high current with the heater off - I'd check for a loose or damaged connector on the sensor or maybe damage to the wiring somewhere further up - then I'd clear it and see if it comes back.

Very helpful video. Like others say, get the starter bolts out first, move the starter some, and undo the electrical connections. I tried to do the job with the exhaust pipe in place but ended up removing it because I couldn't sneak the starter down past it. The hardest part was getting the starter bolts restarted.

I think honda had a few years of bad starters. My 2012 died at 100,000 and my dad's died around 90,000. Step sisters starter died around 100,000 as well. They start sounding weak and then they will begin to intermittently work requiring you to turn the key several times to start. Shortly afterwards they completely fail.

how much would you charge to do this job?
@LemurMonitors
@LemurMonitors 4 жыл бұрын
We aren't mechanics (the goal is to demonstrate the job can be done by a normal person with a few tools) so for us it would be more of a question of "how many cases of beer" The book time looks to be about 1.5 hours (multiply that by your local labor rates) and an OEM starter (P/N 31200RNAA01) is between $220-$320 while an aftermarket unit is about $100-$200 - so probably anywhere from $225 to $485ish

What if the starter spins when checked on the table but only clicks when installed?
@LemurMonitors
@LemurMonitors 4 жыл бұрын
Bad ground or wiring issue maybe? Might also be worth checking your starter relay.
@ncyankee101
@ncyankee101 3 жыл бұрын
A bad starter can spin on the table but not have enough power to turn the engine. An amperage draw test can give a better idea of how strong the motor is. Ideally it should pull about 60 amps when new. I think 40 amps will pass the tester at a parts store. I've pulled three failed / failing starters and they all pulled around 30. I just rebuilt and reinstalled one, showed 53 amps and the brushes were still square so that should go up as they break in.

@LemurMonitors
@LemurMonitors 4 жыл бұрын
Book time is 1.5 hours, but a normal person isn't doing it that fast in the driveway - this one is a bit of a pain, it's doable but you want to leave the better part of a day for it in case you run in to trouble - it's hard to see what you're doing.
