Always loved the looks of the Shovel engine. Had a 79 Superglide that hated me. Could ride to work one day, park her in the garage that night and the freaking thing would refuse to start the next morning! Great ride when it ran through.

Mine is the same way. I'll usually be parked in public with a bunch of curious people around me when it decides not to run, though. 🤣

No shit man , got me a 79 fx does good then the next day gives me a hard time. Of. 3 shovels I've had tis one.has given the most problems. And I've had it the longest. Seems the less I ride it the more problems it gives me. I live 1.5.miles to where I work which is why I don't ride to work plus the guard dogs in the parking yard.chew up everything. ...Sonsabitches...

Finally, someone who knows to straddle the bike when kick starting. So many others do it the hard way by standing to the side. You have to raise your leg higher, which whether you believe it or not IS MORE TIREING. Stradleing the bike also lets you land on the seat if the engine kicks back. What are you going to land on if you stand to the side? Shins, etc. Standing to the side doesn't make you cool.

I'm with you , 100 %. I owned lots of shovels in 47 years. It's the only way I start the bike. That side straddle jazz when you hit a kickback, is always entertaining to watch when someone else does it! Especially if they lose their balance and fall down like I did when I first tried it in 1973.

@Happy Jack. I'm glad to see you haven't adapted the "hot new way" to kick start motorcycles. It's not entirely new as I started seeing it done in 1974 in Sturgis, S.D. but it is still nothing but a fashion trend as it is not the easiest nor the most stable way to do it. Straddling a bike is the original, quickest, easiest and most stable way to kickstart. This comes from a guy that has ridden Harleys since 1963. I hope you are having some great rides!

I would get all geared up, torch off a doob grab me a beer go out throw a leg over my honda 50 and have it lit in 3 kicks and never looked back I was 6yrs old then Im 58 now and I still ride that lil honda down to the mailbox everyday, I never did get the hang of using my right foot to kick without my left shin gettin in the way.

Man I wish I could get an ol kidney cover shovel theres a few here and there but prices are pretty steep cuz you know they dont really wanna sell em! I have a 83 fxwg with 4sp ratchet top kicker and a 81 heritage buy back model its electric start I got a 13 ultra classic as good as it is it aint as good as these old shovels.

this bikes only got x amount of miles,but if you hooked up the speedo,you'd have xxxxxxxxxamount of miles,Ihad a 1979 half year,mine was a 80 c.i.,they switched from 74 c.i. in the half year,Loved that motorcycle,have a 2006 lowrider now,and the 79 was,to me a better feeling,riding,looking,sounding,just a cool motorcycle.

A few upgrades to address the inherent shortcomings (like that f--kin mag that makes them a PITA to cold start) and a better carb and oil pump and they're bullet proof
