We begin the day with a big breakfast and some bike issues. Thankfully as the day progresses, we figure out how to deal with them - WARNING: There will be some boring bike mechanic talk....
Once we're on the road, we begin our big detour inland and meet Banana the Bullock.

D&B Cycling Australia is a video series documenting our time bicycle touring Australia; a bicycle tour led by our desire to seek out roadside attractions -- everything from the interesting and quirky, to the macabre and obscure.
We had initially planned on bike touring Australia as the first leg of an around the world bike tour, but the Covid-19 Pandemic that struck mid way through the trip forced us to change our plans and extend our Australian cycling adventure.
Thankfully Australia is a huge country with plenty to see, so we'll continue cycling around Australia until it's time to move on to the next adventure.

Looks like good cycling adventures Bonnie and Dave. Enjoyed learning about the meridian rock markers, miner's memorial and silo art. Nice to document all these stories!

Love your commentary Dave. It gives you a real feel for the realities of the trip. Bonnies observations are great, and make me feel like skipping the next time I am out on the road. Safe travels thrillseekers

Thanks so much Peter! I'm hoping to add more voice-over commentary too. I've had a hard time figuring out the flow of it, but I'm going to try to work it in more as I think it really adds to the video. Will let Bonnie know your kind comments! Thanks again!

You are right, we definitely should! There's a lot of things we didn't really do as it turns out filming everything as you go is actually really difficult. Who would've thought!? In future adventures we will definitely be changing up the way we film and what we film! Watch this space!

Bugger, i seen this video too late, i live in banana shire, 5:25 that big concrete embankment, you can ride up and turn off and go back along the top on the old highway, puts you probably another 20meters higher, you could also camp up there its been done plenty of times, you rode the highway all the way into Biloela when you should of turned off onto Coal Road, it doesnt get any wilder then that because coal road intersects the BNT, Australia's largest hiking track that no one uses, you would pass abandoned farms, abandoned power stations, plenty of water at the lake, and go through the hills into Kroombit Tops following the fire break trails all the way to Cania Gorge, thats just about 100kms of the BNT that slices down the east coast. Its all out there waiting for us to ride on it!

Oh man, that's such a bummer! It would have been great to say Hi! Yeah, I'm very familiar with the BNT. If I was riding alone, I probably would have ridden large chunks of it, but Bonnie doesn't do off-road so we're somewhat limited in that regard! Unfortunately, when you're touring like this you don't always find the best way. Every town we get to is the first time we've been to that town and every road we ride on is also for the first time, so we're just making it up as we go along. Every now and again we get a chance to do some research or are given a nugget of local knowledge, but for the most part: we just have to figure it as we go! It would have been awesome to get up on top of that concrete embankment. Bet the views are great and it would have been a killer camp spot! Cheers! D

It's really easy to take a nice smooth drive train for granted until it's not smooth isn't it. I had to laugh at the green grass at the campground. I made that mistake once and no one told me. It was the sprinkler system for an aerobic septic system and not very efficient. It was about 2am when they went off and around 0`C and my leather saddle was not covered. I jumped out if my tent and carried my bike outside the radius of the sprinklers and got back in the tent stinking and freezing. It's funny now but it sure as hell wasn't funny then. I'm glad you two didn't have to go through that. WHEW! another great episode guys ✌

Yep, thankfully my tinkering with the clutch etc really helped. I was sort of banking on those adjustments keeping it somewhat bearable until eventually the chain "bedded in" like the previous one had. Some lessons learned on that one! Most of the sprinkler systems here use awful dirty water. I think they call it "reclaimed water" or something like that and from what I understand, it'll be equally disgusting to your situation! I saw a touring video where a guy camped in the dugout by a football field and got absolutely hosed down by the sprinklers - sleeping bag saturated - it looked miserable!

Great video. After wrecking a couple of cassettes in pretty short order on two different bikes I’m now trying the three chain rotation method. So new cassette new chain, replace after 6 months, next chain replace after 6 months and I’m on my third chain on both bikes now. I’m going to let the third one wear to .5 then chuck it and then put the first chain back on wear to .5 and repeat. I reckon the cassette will be pretty well cactus by then. Have to see how it goes. But I’ll certainly get a lot more life out of the cassette than the first one. Already have. Probably not particularly practical on a bike tour though. And when you’re touring you’d be doing way more K’s than me. Anyway all the best with the rest of your trip.

@@Jamie.S. - I ended up following a similar method later down the line, but with 2 chains. I would rotate them every 1000km so that neither got too married to the cassette. I'm still doing it on my touring bike and it seems to be going OK. I reckon I'm long overdue a new chainring though.... Cheers for commenting!

Another great vid. I prefer inland myself, and the actual outback is the best, though I've never cycled there (yet). More challenging re water though.
@VeloObscura
@VeloObscura 2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. If we had a chance to do it again, we'd probably do the entire thing inland! We just had too much stuff to tick off on the coast... The water thing is definitely more difficult. Over near the coast is so populated that you barely need to carry enough to last 2 hours! 😅 Cheers!

Cute re Banana; a) I'd never heard of that town before (and I worked for PMG/Australia Post a number of years, b} what is a 'quality' sausage roll? Also, were the ones you ate really good enough to be 'quality'? Interesting what you said (early in this vid) about there being no supplies available, etc. but lots of places to camp. The ride I'm planning (mentioned some time back), not only are there no supplies but also very little in likely camping spots. Re the chain/cassette situation, I hope you can replace the cassette ere long. Seems as though it has to go. What about those WIIIIDE loads?? I haven't seen anything that wide moving that fast!! I now have a Steripen for making almost any water potable. The town water always seems to have a 'metallic' taste, so I tried out the Steripen on a glass of it from my kitchen tap. Honestly, the difference surprised me; the metallic taste had gone! Keep up the great work, Dave and Bonnie!

Banana was a really pleasant surprise! In hindsight I probably should have known that a town with such an unusual name would have some sort of story - much like 1770. Regarding the sausage roll, I can't remember if they were actually good, but Bonnie (the vegetarian) seemed to think they were worth buying! 😂 Although the distances were shorter, it did quite remind me of the Nullarbor out there. Long stretches of highway through the scrub with plenty of potential camping spots amongst the cattle stations. The chain situation was frustrating. I had taken too long to change the chain and allowed it to "bed into" the cassette. Thankfully with some B-screw adjustment and utilizing the derailleur's clutch, I got it working pretty much perfectly again. The hope was that the new chain would eventually "bed in" too if I could just bear with it long enough. The Steripen is a fantastic invention! I've thought about grabbing one for a while to replace our old-fashioned filter-type system. I didn't think it would remove a bad taste though! That's pretty great!
@brianward7724
@brianward7724 2 жыл бұрын
@@VeloObscura The Steripen is supposedly able to remove everything except solids. You know, I had looked at prices online - and they have increased substantially quite recently - so imagine my surprise, when I was shown this one on special at the local camping store at Young (50 kms away) - at $75.

@@brianward7724 - Yep, that's part of my hesitance in buying one. I'm was trying to differentiate the different models and what would be the best for us, but in the end I put it off because they're quite pricey. I will chase them up in future though. I know a lot of people first use a bandana or something to filter all the bits out of particularly dirty water before using the steripen to purify it. The water needs to be pretty murky to need to do that though!

Hi are you guys camp or stays in accommodation? How many litters of water do you carry? Do you have any plan to ride on a road stretches 1000 km without campsite or water? Because I planning to ride by this September.. any advices, please?
@VeloObscura
@VeloObscura 2 жыл бұрын
Hi We mostly try and camp, but stay in accommodation occasionally. Mostly Warmshowers, but sometimes hotels too if they're cheap. Water varies. We have a standard capacity of about 7 litres each, but have carried more in the past. We carry a water filter and gather water from creeks a lot. We haven't ridden that far without water yet, but have done it without food. To carry water for a stretch like that we would need to carry at least 16l each. Maybe more. One day perhaps?
