I am a motion picture editor and I live in Los Angeles, CA with my wife and kids. On the side of editing, I have decided to take on a new challenge, turning my families land into a pecan orchard. It’s on thing for Old MacDonald to have a farm but I’m learning it’s something completely different to have 150 acres of raw family land, in Luverne Alabama, and to establish on it a commercially viable pecan orchard.
This video is not necessarily about farm life, but it is most definitely about a project farm! This video takes place after my initial planting of 500 pecan trees. My dream farm, or my dream for this farm, is to have at least 80 acres planted with Pecan trees. The varietals I just planted are Lakota, Gafford and Amling. Lakota is my main crop and Amling and Gafford are my pollinating varietals. The majority of the trees made it through their first summer and I have come back to the farm for a four week stint to try and whoop the land into shape.
It’s November and the trees are losing their leaves for the winter. I have a number of projects that have to be completed. I have applied 10 tons of Lime and 500 pounds of Phosphorus, as directed by the Auburn University Agricultural Department’s soil test. I am in the process of weed eating around every tree and assessing the condition of each tree.
There is no water or power on the property. In This video all of that begins to change. To bringing water and power to my property I am bringing in heavy equipment like a backhoe, a bulldozer, and a CAT loader and begin installing my main irrigation line and preparing the land for a future barn. I am also trying out an idea I have for cutting a trench, laying the water line and covering up the trench all in one felt swoop; using a ripper or subsoiler that I have fabricated a pipe onto. In this video you can see the preparations and the process. The property is not a super ranch yet but we are making progress!
