What a handsome grey this guy is and a quick study as well especially given that he’s new at R+. I learn so much from your videos Shawna they’re really helpful and I also appreciate your explanation of both what your doing as well as the different cues/body language the horse is giving off along with what they mean bc I’ve never had the privilege of sharing my life with an equine(maybe one day hopefully)so thank you you’re work is wonderful and so appreciated(my only complaint is that it’s too short lol of course any videos u share a worth a watch regardless)❤️❤️ Also do you sell the specific clicker you use on your site??😊🐎

How do you handle spoiled horses with this training with food?
@shawnakarrasch
@shawnakarrasch 8 ай бұрын
The first lesson is teaching them manners, clarity and relaxation around food. So we address it from the very beginning. At the start, a lot of horses are really excited about the food. Pushy is one thing, they usually sort it out in a few minutes. True food “aggression” is not too hard to sort out either but we may try to figure out ways to minimize their tension. Understanding the science helps us be able to understand motivation. These early steps are important and are the building blocks that create the crucial foundation. If you want to learn more, I suggest that you go to the website and sign up for the email list. It will send you a free talk and help you to get a better idea. Also, we have a podcast called, Equine Clicker 101. Episode one is a lesson about the first session. There are 50 lessons but the first few are the important foundation lessons. 😊Shawnakarrasch.com

@@shawnakarrasch ok thanks. Could you elaborate on how this way of training fixed bad habits of spoiled horses guess thats what I should have asked. Biting, striking, rearing, kicking, things alike. Is this approach of training able to correct those behaviors? Somewhere on social media someone was promoting this way of positive reinforcement stating horses dont have disrespect or revenge because they dont have a frontal lobe function (?) Sorry my comment is loaded with questions and seeking explanations.

All great questions. That sort of behavior is typically caused by some sort of discomfort. Whether it is physical, emotional, sometimes pain. Sometimes it is needs not being met via management practices. So that is where we start before beginning to address the behavioral side. Behavior serves a purpose. This tension typically starts as a more subtle communication in the form of facial expressions and body language. Once we ruled out the physical and emotional stressors we begin to work on the behavior and change their associations so it helps them to get to a more settled place. When they are out of this fight or flight stage they tend become more cognizant and make better choices. Due to their prefrontal cortex development, they are not plotting or planning. Their are nit setting out to be malicious. Even aggression typically comes from fear. If we can identify and address the cause, we will minimize fear, frustration and tension. Again, that free video will teach you more about their behavior and motivation.
