I feed mine dry quick oats that I pulverize into a powder in the food processor. I keep it in a repurposed container with a flip top lid for quick sprinkling. Then I mist it after I sprinkle to moisten it. My culture often grows out of control on the stuff lol.

Veja se eu entendi. vc coloca o carvão em uma água com aveia? depois coloca em um recipiente fechado, e os insetos reproduzem? See if I understand. Do you put charcoal in water with oatmeal? then put it in a closed container, and the insects reproduce?

Do you ever add a calcium supplement or do the oats cover that?
@ShellyCline
@ShellyCline 6 ай бұрын
@@BobyChanMan no I never add calcium. Springtails don't require it. They just need to feed off the mold that will grow on the oats.
@ShellyCline

@@marcoapolinario2009 sorry for the late reply I only just saw your question. I keep my springtails in a container with horticultural charcoal and a little bit of water. I have extremely tiny holes in the lid for ventilation. I pulverize the oats into a powder and I don't add anything to it. Not charcoal or anything else. I then sprinkle that powder over the charcoal in my springtail culture. I mist the powder with water to get it moist and put the lid back on. The springtails will start eating the oats right away but within a day the oats will grow mold that the springtails will also feed on. When the oats and mold is almost gone you can add more by repeating the same process.

Collect along with substrate. Pour water and springtails will float up. Pour gently over charcoal in another container. They cause no harm to humans.

I think I bought a bad batch of substrate, I changed out my tortoise's substrate a few weeks ago and now it looks like there's springtails everywhere. Are those ones okay, or should I change out the substrate again? (I've never had them before so I'm worried about my lil dude!)

I bought an airtight plastic container from the dollar store and I took a sewing needle, while holding it with pliers I heated the needle with a lighter and then poked several very tiny holes in the lid. I did this until I had probably 50 holes. They are plenty big enough and numerous to allow for oxygen but too small for gnats to fit through. 😊 FYI I had to reheat the needle with the lighter every three or four pokes. 😁
