I was a reactor operator for a number of years. Our plant had three 8000 hp 13.8kv feedwater pumps, with step-up gearboxes to run the pumps at over 4000 rpm. Full power operations required all three pumps, as the reactor consumed feedwater at around 450 gallons per second.

I have participaded in the electric construction of this shredder by Metso Lindemann. The video makes a perfect description of the shredder start. Thanks very much.

The danger is not there. The most dangerous is the projection of pieces of metal during grinding. Access to the perimeter of the crusher has been prohibited recently during grinding.

Just, the motor starts idling without load and then the coupler gradually starts the crusher drum.

I always thought that, based on the giant size of the motor and hammer-rotor, that the driveshaft from the motor was directed! All torque from the weight of the rotor hammer.

With a speed of only 600 rpm this 1500 kW motor has enormous torque. Standard motors normally run at 1500 or 3000rpm

So how is the hydraulic coupling engaged and disengaged? Adding fluid to the coupler until it transfers more and more torque? By the way is it just a plain hydraulic coupling or a torque converter?
@YvesMamin
@YvesMamin 3 жыл бұрын
This is a hydraulic coupling with progressive loading. Do not know the construction detail. Some more info here (TV type: with delay chamber): voith.com/uk-en/products-services/connection-components-couplings/fluid-couplings.html?120475%5B%5D=1
@mibars
@mibars 3 жыл бұрын
@@YvesMamin Thank you, I've read a bit about them and these are clever little machines on it's own: They are partially filled, self-contained and fully automatic couplings with a so called "delay chamber" which stores some of the fluid away from impeller and turbine and once the speed increases more and more fluid is forced into working chamber allowing more torque to be transmitted.

The pipes under the coupler, and the housing appear to be the type that is controlled by being remotely filled and constantly draining to control the fill level. The oil is sent through filtration and cooling. This would be typical for such a large machine. The self contained versions have poor behavior when a machine is overloaded, which is common with hammer mills processing steel scrap. In the self contained ones the oil gets hot quickly when over burdened... they are cooled by convection, and would not be closed in a housing like this.
@rovhalgrencparselstedt8343
@rovhalgrencparselstedt8343 2 ай бұрын
@@woodyjumps Yes that makes perfect sense as the hydraulic fluid would get boiling hot and risk getting burnt and wasted if not continously circulated and atleast cooled.
@woodyjumps
@woodyjumps Ай бұрын
@@rovhalgrencparselstedt8343 The type having a closed housing, with no circulation, are fitted with thermally activated plugs which open and spill out their oil if they get too hot. They can also be fitted with a pop up sensor which will trigger a switch that shuts off the motor.

Three phase motor has two leads for each phase winding brought out to the pecker head. Sequential timed action of two mechanically-interlocked contactors connect the windings in a "wye" (Y) configuration for a few seconds (START), then the first contactor opens, and the second contactor connects the windings in a "delta" configuration for "RUN". The starter has two three-phase contactors and a timer.

And just to tell why using a star starter and switching to delta is because at star the motor only takes 1/3 of needed amps to start. But also only puts out 1/3 of power. Then it switches to delta and it has full power. Google star/delta starter

Why star-delta? We have 8 1050kW 6kW motors at work and i start directly with load (around 15% of load). (dedusting unit fan) Start up current its about 300A, idle current is 80-100A and under max load is 145A :-)
@YvesMamin

In practice there is no problem for a direct start. However, in Switzerland, electrical regulations require a soft starter or star-delta coupling for any power greater than 4kW.
