Finally, advice from up north. It’s a whole different ballgame up here.

I like the idea of bigger pots with the exception being tomatoes. I find up-potting and burying the stems is great for kickstarting growth as their stems shoot out new roots when buried.

I’m not a expert gardener, but I’m getting started. I’ve watched a lot of utube videos about starting with seeds. Several experienced gardeners have also started putting a small fan near the seedlings mimics the wind and helps the plants be stronger. Food for thought.

That lighting system setup is perfect 👌 I keep my lights 30 inches away from my seedlings and never had an issue.

Back to the chili plants, tomatoes, melons, squash and all kinds of other stuff. When I mentioned Richard and Holly ordering more chickens, Ruth asked “who.”. After my refresher ID- now we have a grower box of large size with, four Speckled Sussex, 2 Blue Plymouth Rocks, 2 Golden Wyandotte’s, 2 Lavender Orpingtons and 2 Red sex links! You guys are contagious but between poopy butt cleaning and seeing our seedling popping out in the room We are having a ball! Thanks for both of You showing instructing and laughing.

I love seeing how people start their seeds. I've always used the little mesh pods, but I must admit the up-potting is such a bummer! In AZ it was a must because they really saved water. But, now that water isn't an issue I think I might try the 4" pots! Those sound like they work great! Thanks for sharing! 😊💗

Seed starting is one of the best things about spring! This is a great how-to guide! I did get a heat mat for my peppers and sweet potatoes this year and I do think it helped…the one that I have has a temperature adjuster though to keep it from getting too hot, plus I have my pots in a self-watering tray so they aren’t touching the heat mat directly. Baking the soil while they try to germinate would definitely not be helpful!

That window is perfect to start them. Solid plan for your situation, we have such a short growing season we need to start much more inside. If we had a greenhouse, it would be a huge help. We started seeds too. I’m experimenting with the dwarf tomato project seeds. Wow, those little buggers are gems, the stalks are as thick as my thumb. I’ll try and send you a pic. We plant in the kitchen too and use a chopstick, it’s okay Holly 😊 Thanks for the video, I so enjoy them!

Lots of good stuff. Really enjoyed the video. I also don't like up-potting. I use a 32-cell insert for a 1020. Each cell has a 2.5" x 2.5" x 3.5" pot in it and I mark each pot with painter's tape/marker 'cause there's 32 with lots of different varieties.

Thank you for a no-brainer guide to starting seeds! Some make it a real song and dance or a juggling performance. My biggest problem is that I don't have a great deal of room for starters. I have no basement or garage space. So, the living room/dining room it is.

You’re so methodical. I love it. What a great video talking about seedlings in a cold climate. We use larger pots also when we can. We decided to use starts this year but then it snowed today so why not start seeds. Lol

Lol a SAFEHOUSE for plants!!! Or it could be the HALFWAY HOUSE too. Hehe I have basically the same lighting and shelving set up. But I do use heat mats and absolutely love them because tomatoes and peppers germinate in 3 or 4 days vs weeks. I have my lights on them as soon as they are planted. Not necessarily because they need it, but because that bright light reminds me to tend to them. When they germinate, the heat mat gets turned off. I've found a wonderful seed starting medium that has worm castings and bat guano in it. I don't like using seed starting mix because it has no nutrients in it. Seedlings tend to die off quickly if you just use seed starting mix. I dislike up potting stuff too. I will do it tho for some things. Happy Growing!!!

Like you I now use bigger pots for most things. I use 3 1/2 inch round pots, an under bead storage box as a tray. I leave one pot in the corner empty, this allows for easy watering of the tray. Just poor water into the empty pot.

Great video! I'm an Arkie married to a Swede. I also hate the up potting fiasco. I like your idea of the 4" pots from the start. While watching this video I had an a ha moment. Why not start tomatoes in a 4x4 pot that is deeper than normal? I know that I've seen them. Bootstrap Farmer maybe? I think I'll try starting them with a little soil and then add soil as they grow. Similar hilling potatoes. Might result in a tomato with lots of roots with no up potting! Now.... Lights. I bought cheap led lights and mounted six on a rectangular piece of sheet metal. Then I mounted a small chain on all 4 corners. The chains is almost as long as my grow rack shelf spacing. Next I made four hooks from four chain links. These hang from the bottom of the next shelf up. With that I can adjust the shelves so that they are about1" above the plants. I'm in my second year with this set-up and it is working great!!! I am still dragging my feet on seed starting. But I'm soaking the soil tonight so maybe I'll put some in tomorrow. The 3' of snow in my garden and the single digit temps really make me wonder when spring is going to show up.

We started a month earlier than last year. I want to grow nice peppers this year and we just don’t have a long enough season otherwise. Never had luck with heat a mat, I use that for growing sprouts. 😂 Great video. Good luck.

HERE is an innovative idea>>> A weed farmer in California (where else?) scavenged a few BROKEN commercial refrigerators from a scrap dealer. He fixed the inside light, cut the cord to the compressors and uses them for seed germination. He places his seed trays inside on growpads & the insulation to keep the refer cold, keeps it warm. WOW. Starting refer in a refer. Whoda thought? Reuse-Recycle-Repurpose just like any good hippie would. !

Hopefully you have many 6-8 inches tall seedlings to transplant when the warm weather begins.

When did you start planting the seeds? When and HOW did you transplant to the ground. I started last year late April and when I transplanted tot he garden outdoor, all died :( Do I need to climatize the plant in a shade 1st??????
