This is the one part of the Carolina Skiff Rebuild I am comfortable with. My profession is low voltage electrical. Therefore I know what I want and how to do it. I had been planning this part out for years. There are big changes coming for this skiff. No more hardware store toggle switches. Along with gages mounted directly to the console. After poring my heart and soul in this boat. I wanted it right!
The one thing that did throw me a bit was wire size for the motor. This took a little research on my part. It is next to impossible to find the starter draw on my 60hp 96 Johnson. I finally took a educated guess of 150 amps. Luckily there are multiple wire size and voltage drop calculators on the web. I punched in the length and estimated amps. That’s when I realized it was going o be expensive. Big marine grade wire is not cheap!
With a minimum size of 2 awg wire. I decided to bump it up to 1/0. For the small price difference it was worth it to me. I shopped around everywhere I could find. Surprisingly red is more expensive. Therefore it’s all black. Which I think looks better anyway. I found a 50 foot spool at a good price and went with it.
One thing I hated before was dragging out two battery chargers every time I wanted to go fishing. For me it was worth the investment for a good onboard charger. After reading a lot of reviews. I decided on the Noco 3 battery charger. This way I could charge my main motor battery. As well as my two batteries for my new 24v trolling motor. This will be a game changer for me.
Breaking up these videos has been a challenge. To me it’s a lot to try and stuff in one video. I hate to skip a lot of work to keep the video shorter. I hope everyone agrees. Thank you to everyone who has followed along, subscribed, liked, and commented!
