Hi Toon, I'm glad I have discovered your channel. It is very informative but also funny. Keep up the good work! I have acrylics at home but I have difficulties with the handling, e. g. keeping brushes wet during painting, waste water disposal, cleaning brushes full of gesso. This is what prevents me from using acrylics. Do you just dump the waste water in the sink? Would you please make a video about acrylic waste water disposal. Thank you. Many greetings from 🇩🇪🤗

That's a good subject for a future video, I'll put it on my list! This is the way I do it: first wipe of exess paint or gesso on paper towel until the paint gets 'sticky', then just dip the brush in the water jar (without rinsing, just make the bristles moist again) then wipe on paper towel again, more paint will come off. Repeat this process until your brush is almost clean, and then you can rinse the brush in the water. You'll notice that the water in your jar will stay relatively clean. So: yes after a while I dump the waste water in the sink, but it's relatively clean. But I have more tips, bit long to write them all, so I'll certainly do a video. Thanks and herzliche Grüße, viel Spaß beim Malen! 👍🎨

What type of pallet do you use ? Would you give a more detail review on palettes? I think I see yours is colored middle gray.
@toon-nagtegaal
@toon-nagtegaal 7 ай бұрын
Well spotted, it is a middle gray glass palette!👍 You can easily make one yourself, I made a video about that as well: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y55gjJapsre4oYE.html I like middle gray because it's easier to judge colors and tonal values. The glass surface is handy because you can easily clean it. For simple things I sometimes use a tear-off palette. For instance when I want to mix a large amount of gesso with some black paint.

@@toon-nagtegaal I've discovered a less expensive alternative to tear-off palette sheets -- freezer paper! I binder clip it to a small hardboard/drawing board, slick coated side up. Enjoy!

Would you be able to do a diy gesso? I 've tried just regular pop, white glue and acrylic paint to tone it .. then when that dried up, i sanded it down
@toon-nagtegaal
@toon-nagtegaal 9 ай бұрын
I'm not that handy myself with that kind of things (and probably quite lazy!) I always just buy gesso, so that I don't have to think too much. But maybe there are other channels where you can find that kind of information!👍

Toon, i notice tgat you ise grey gesso. Is that because it's easier to get more accurate tonal values? The only thing i can paint well is the gesso. The rest of the painting doesn't go so well!😂
@toon-nagtegaal
@toon-nagtegaal 3 ай бұрын
😂Seems like you've already found your artistic style with your skills to capture the philosophy of emptiness in gesso!! Yes that's right, it's easier to judge values + not only can you work from light to dark, but from dark to light as well. On a grey canvas, a light color looks light, on a white color a light color looks dark. I made a video about the benefits of a toned canvas: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ftGCaryW0ry7fJ8.html Have fun painting!🎨👍

Hi Toon, I see you use Expert paint and mention always 'primary yellow' - I don't see that Expert (here in USA) offers a Primary Yellow. Does Primary Yellow come by another name? Or Pigment Index number? Thank you.
@toon-nagtegaal
@toon-nagtegaal 9 ай бұрын
There are two main series: Standard and Expert. Standard is student quality paint. Just as with for instance Winsor & Newton, this 'student-quality' paint is already quite good. It contains high quality pigments. In the Expert Series (artist quality) you'll find some of the same pigments that you find in the Standard series, for instance: ultramarine blue. In the Expert Series the paint contains more pigment, the pigments are ground more extensively and it only contains pure acrylic binder. So, if you use Expert ultramarine blue, you have in fact the same pigment as in the Standard series, but the Expert one looks more intense straight away because of the higher pigmentation. Another thing is: in the Expert Series you'll encounter pigments that are not available in the Standard series. These pigment don't match the expactations for the highest possible quality. They often are replaced with better (but more expensive) alternatives. Primary yellow is one of them, because cadmium yellow light is a very good pigment to use as a primary yellow. However, it is a very expensive pigment, and that's also why you'll encounter different prices in the Expert Series, cad yellow is more expensive than ultramarine for instance. But the main thing is: you certainly don't need to have primary yellow, magenta and cyan, but it is good to think and always envision these as base colors that you can use to relate all other colors to, so that you can get to the mixing result you want. Just like in your previous question about pyrrole red: if you think of pyrrole red as though it would consist of magenta and a touch of yellow, then it's easier to find a substitute if you don't have that red. So please don't mind to much about the exact pigments and colors that I use, last time in your reply concerning the reds, I noticed that you understand the principles quite well, and that's what it's all about! It's a bit of a long answer, I hope it makes sense, otherwise let me know! 🎨👍

@@toon-nagtegaal Excellent and thorough response, Toon, thank you. And, thank for you the 'head's-up' on the 2 series of the brand Expert paint- he Expert Series artist quality and the Standard series, student grade. The Primary Yellow for which I search would be a transparent option to Cad. Yellow Light. A yellow if possible with neither a warm(red) or cool (r blue) bias. I don't know if it a non-bias yellow exists ?? thank you.

@@lolitakaloustianyoung7787 I think that number 272 (transparant yellow medium) is closest to what you want. It might be very slightly more towards the warm side, but I guess it's neutral enough. 🎨
