It's possible to reconcile. My father wasn't a drunkard or anything, and he had his reasons for things. He's always been very cold, as we all are in our family. Scandinavian, harsh background, not badly off but a lot of "weight" there. And then my parents' divorce ripped everything up, and I got a hard time in school. Not bad grades, but I did a pretty tough program, and I was constantly on the outside and getting put on by these damn shiksa feminista teachers, etc. Bouncing back and forth between my parents... Anyway, in the middle of all of this crap, my old man decides to build a house. Which makes financial sense. But there's me, getting roped into that while doing a Baccalaureate and getting ridden and having no creative outlet for anything, and meanwhile my mom's off with a couple of new guys chasing living standards that she's trying not to pay for herself. I'm coming off of just about a year after being bowled through the air by a Passat at 50kph, and now being forced to drag rebar and beams and concrete, it takes an hour and a half to get anywhere, meanwhile I see other people, in the family and out, getting all the support they could need... The whole thing turns absolutely poisonous. I give up hope on my ma, 'cause she's just that selfish and rationalizing that I understand she's never really going to even be able to bear admitting to herself how she's acting... But I still blame my dad. 'Cause on the one hand he's the one putting the most actual weight on me, and on the other hand I can tell that he's the one who actually cares, but I don't get how he can square that with what he's choosing to do and putting me so low on the list of priorities. So we have a lot of evil, evil arguments, which actually consist mostly of me just standing there and silently raging and looking at him like "I have nothing to actually put up against you, no money or options of my own; but you've seen to that in part yourself, so how the hell? Are you listening to yourself?" Eventually it goes too damn far. So I beat the shit out of him, and I'm about to do worse. But I stop myself, and then I throw a bunch of clothes in a trash bag, stick it in my teeth, and swim a few hundred meters through Baltic water in goddamn March, and then walk for a day to get over to my mom's place. And I don't talk to him again for a few years. Anyway, after that we had a long, long process. But between how much I hated living with my mom and biting my tongue, and him getting that "perspective adjustment," we get to sort of realize that we're both f-ed up in a way that at least works together. And eventually he apologizes in a way that I can trust that he understands. He lives in Portugal these days, so it's not exactly like we're that much in touch, but we have frequent long phonecalls and while I mostly just put up with and otherwise try to stay away from the rest of the family as much as possible, whenever he's up here we always make sure to wine and dine and do something and have thorough discussions and draw engineering ideas and whatnot.

@@Sakhmeov It was domestic abuse in my family. I watched my mum get beat up quite a few times and other things. Then the divorce came and I was having to put up with extreme bullying at school. I ended up getting into Thai boxing as I was leaving school back in 1995 and became a fighter. Still train today as it keeps me grounded and I see it as a gift from God. I was afraid of my dad because of his temper. He mellowed out a bit in his old age but passed away in 2007 before we had a proper heart to heart.

If he was a UFC fighter, which is a big deal to be good enough to get into the UFC, even if you’re not in the big fights, how did the background check not catch that?
@dustinwilson4815
@dustinwilson4815 4 ай бұрын
As someone with a security clearance, I can say that most background checks are rather simple, and can miss a lot. Also, the UFC is completely legal, so the only issue the school has is their image. And a standard background check would never have flagged him for his legal career in the UFC. I suspect that, in real life, he could have easily sued for discrimination and won handily. He'd get back pay and reinstatement, also damages. But he was up against a wall with his overdue mortgage, so he had to do something faster.

The fight scenes were great but the relationship dynamics were fxxxng hard to watch man. Nolte's character was like a lesson in cognitive dissonance for me. That father beat the shit out of Tommy's mom. And Tommy fled with his mother while his brother stayed behind with his father. Of course Tommy was cold to his father. Tommy was never a bad person. His anger is from his bad childhood and feeling betrayed by his brother. His father's actions basically tore his family apart. His father didn't clean up his act until months before the start of the movie. People liking your post blows my mind.
