Benjamin Netanyahu has recalled Israel's ambassadors to Spain, Ireland, and Norway to issue a "severe reprimand" to the European nations following their decision to recognise Palestinian statehood.
Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz condemned the gesture of support for the Palestinians as "folly". This move increases the number of the EU's 27 member states that recognise Palestinian statehood, although it does not include major powers within the bloc.
James O'Brien reacts to this latest development in the Israel-Palestine conflict and explores what the ramifications of this may be.

You guys don't get that it's not just the more recent issues of Northern Ireland. It's about Ireland becoming a republic before that too. The Troubles in Northern Ireland can be compared to Israel and Palestine, and separately the suffering of Ireland as a whole, the forced starvation, etc at the hands of the British can be compared to it also. Ireland had always supported the Palestinians in this conflict.

A parallel discrimination and power imbalance in Northern Ireland, as Catholic communities complained of discrimination by the Protestant-controlled government and police forces. Also, a parallel in political manipulation. In Northern Ireland, there was systematic discrimination in housing and jobs and voting districts had been gerrymandered. And, of course, parallels in terms of violence and unrest. Northern Ireland was scarred by a period of deadly sectarian violence (the "Troubles"), while the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been marked by violence, including terrorist attacks by Palestinian groups and grossly disproportionate military operations by Israel. The things I mention are only regarding the more recent Northern Ireland conflict. We could take the British-Irish conflict before its independence and draw parallels, too.

The Irish stance is particularly significant. Ireland shares with the Jewish people a history of exile and discrimination. The Irish Free State became a Republic in the same year that Israel was founded. The 6th President of Israel was born in Belfast and grew up in Dublin. The Israelis who fought the British in 1947 drew part of their inspiration from the Irish Freedom struggle of 1921-22. The founder of Zionism, Theodor Herzl, drew inspiration from Irish Patriot Charles Stewart Parnell. Ireland takes its stand that the sovereign freedom of the Israeli people cannot be at the cost of the subjugation and enslavement of the Palestinian people. Hamas is not the problem, no more than the IRA was the problem during the Troubles: it is a symptom of the problem, just as the IRA was a symptom of the problem in Northern Ireland.

From a Brit: The UK history is filled periods when the UK oppressed the Irish and caused historical untold misery to its close neighbour which led to understandable long standing resentment and regular militant action with death and misery on both sides. It was only through political dialogue and reconciliation that peace was wrought. However please note - at no point throughout the troubles would the UK have considered carpet bombing those districts of our close neighbour that were the source of militant action. I think I can honestly say that the UK is now very fond of and has deep respect for the religious and cultural values of our close neighbour.

Never paid much attention to Ireland,....a small country that is often overshadowed by its bigger and louder European sisters....Boy, I was wrong to think that “size matters”. Yes, it might be a small country but its people, and their courage to stand on the side of humanity, makes it very BIG, earning itself a place amongst the GIANT world leaders of human rights, teaching other countries (some of which are much, much, larger) how to behave in a civilized world.

I come from India and live on the Island of Ireland. Both India and Ireland were partitioned in the similar way to Palestine. India and Ireland faced forced starvation by the occupying force and I see the forced starvation of Palestinian people by the occupying force, another little colonial project. India recognised Palestine as a sovereign state in 1988, first non-Arab state to do so. India was also a protector of Jewish people. People are being played against each other in the name of the religion. ❤️Ireland, Blessed to be here..

Yes, Netanyahu's Likud party has become a difficult partner: they are prosecuting this war in a manner that is politically damaging for the United States; both internationally and domestically - the latter being more important as this is an election year. Both Pelosi and Blinken have made public remarks of frustration concerning Israel's lack of responsiveness to American lobbying. The Times of Israel has reported that the Israel-Hamas war is a bipartisan issue; they report that the US public's sympathies lie with Palestine for all parties and all age groups under 55. Neither side is loosing an election over Israel; the US will make public calls for Netanyahu's resignation which will signal the end of unequivocal US support for Israel. This will inform how future Israeli governments deal with the Palestinian concern lest they loose the hand that feeds them.

Figure ten to fifteen years. My age and younger, young people in 2001, do not have the same memories that the 50-75 set do, with Israel as the bulwark against terror. My age? We see random attacks from islamic states... and constant provocations from the Territory of Israel. We saw our friends fight a 20 year war than most of us did not support the first day of. When those older folks age out of the government... well, Israel has set itself up for a bad day. Because there will come a day when being called Anti-S will not be enough. And Israel needs to be thinking accordingly now.

Zahir Muhsein was a Palestinian leader of the pro-Syria As-Sa'iqa Ba'athist faction of the Palestine Liberation Organization between 1971 and 1979. In an interview with Trouw Magazine, 31. March 1977 he stated....."The Palestinian people do not exist. The creation of a Palestinian state is only a means for continuing our struggle against the state of Israel for our Arab unity. In reality today there is no difference between Jordanians, Palestinians, Syrians and Lebanese. Only for political and tactical reasons do we speak today about the existence of a Palestinian people, since Arab national interests demand that we posit the existence of a distinct "Palestinian people" to oppose Zionism. Yes, the existence of a separate Palestinian identity exists only for tactical reasons. The establishment of a Palestinian state is a new tool to continue the fight against Israel and for Arab unity..........

I have a problem with western power including media and even people like James being theoretical about the severity of the situation. It’s a constant conversation about IF Israel crosses any particular line, often while they have already crossed it. For example Biden speaks of IF Israel invades Rafa with a stern tone while Israel is already there and a million Palestinians have fled the area. James speaks of a potential new Nakba as if it hasn’t already been going on for 6 months. This mode of operations prevents us from discussing the urgent reality of the situation and the core of the problem. False pretenses like “the right to exist” or “defend itself” has for 75 years now been the topic that every discussion begins with, and nobody dares challenge. Can an ethnostate be a democracy? NO. Absolutely out of the question. Does it require violently maintaining an apartheid state? Yes. If Israel wants to exist, it can’t be a carve out because that’s stolen land. It can be a new version of what used to be Palestine but it can’t only have the Star of David in its flag. It would have to include a crescent moon and some extra colors reminding one of a watermelon. I get a bit funny about it because this all seems so glaringly obvious to me as the only possible way forward based on other apartheid regimes in history and the rapid decline of any moral authority in the west as we continue to maintain our last western colony in the Middle East. I have a feeling the plan for western world has always been to postpone the inevitable for as long as the world still runs on oil. And once energy independence is complete, to drop Israel like a bad habit. Besides the Muslim and Arab people being widely propagandized as second class citizens worldwide and especially in this very region, even for the Jews themselves this has been an absolute death trap from the beginning. It’s like a father beating his child to teach him how to survive in the world and the child growing up to be a violent outcast in a society that passed him by. It’s a cycle of abuse we must end as soon as possible.

The only country in the Western Hemisphere which is qualified to talk sense about a fair solution is Ireland 🇮🇪 as they understand occupation and suffering more than any other country in the West.

Irelands Parliament consists of equal input from Sinn Fein which has been successful, to say that Hamas has no place in Palestinian politics is pure hypocrisy

Sinn Fein is still an opposition party commanding minority support overall (albeit growing). Its popularity was largely made possible by a complete and verified voluntary disarmament by the IRA. Could we dare to hope that Hamas and all armed Palistinian groups would put down the guns? That Isreal could find a way to live with their Palistinian neighbours? It sounds like wishful thinking today but this announcement is as much a statement of faith that this peace is possible, and actually very likely in the long run. Ireland and Spain are living proof that very bitter divides can be bridged.

Self determination is a human right, not a reward or charity at the end of an interminable bad faith negotiation process. Iz and the US must be completely isolated in their dogged lawlessness.

If I remember correctly in 1948 Palestine was divided to create Israel but one half of the equations became greedy and the other half became appressed.

One half didn't 'become' greedy, they always were. No historian, Jewish or otherwise, has been able to locate any evidence of Israel ever accepting the 1948 partition plan.

I remember Ireland celebrating Elizabeth's death with the rest of former colonies, and I was so confused😂, since then, the more I watch, the more right they do; I will stand no slander against Ireland 🇮🇪🇿🇦🇵🇸
