Staten Island was first inhabited by the prehistoric Clovis Culture 14,000 years ago. By the time of European discovery, in 1520, the Native American Lenape people inhabited the lands. The Dutch settled here in 1609 and in 1729 the English setup Richmond Town here as the island's capitol. During the American Revolution, Staten Islanders were staunchly in favor of the crown and more than 1400 ships docked here as they prepared to attack. In 1898, Staten Island officially became part of New York City.
Staten Island's north shore is the most urban part of the island and includes historic neighborhoods, like St. George, Tompkinsville, Clifton and Stapleton. Definitely check out the St. Paul's Avenue-Stapleton Heights Historic District, for amazing Victorian houses.
The east shore is home to the 2.5-mile F.D.R. Boardwalk, which is the fourth-longest boardwalk in the world. It contains numerous parks and monuments to the veterans of the World Wars, Korean War and Vietnam War. This part of the island contains some of the most beautiful park landscapes.
The island's south shore is home to the 17th-century Dutch and French Huguenot settlements from the 1960s. You can still find iconic sites throughout these neighborhoods and some of the best natural views New York City has to offer.
The West Shore is the least populated and most industrial part of the island. It contains the legendary Boat Graveyard, where more than 100 wood and metal boats from three centuries have their final resting place. This is one of NYC's most industrious areas.
Staten Island is an incredible place. It's a rural safe-haven in America's largest city and a reminder of where we've been and where we're going. It's most definitely worth a visit!

I have driven through Staten Island twice, and I hardly saw a thing. The first time I crossed the Goethal's Bridge from New Jersey and drove on the Staten Island Expressway to Brooklyn; the second time was decades later; I crossed the Verrazanno Bridge from Brooklyn and eventually crossed the Outerbridge to Perth Amboy. Next time I want to spend a few nights on the island and actually see what's there.

your5best- what is the boat graveyard about?
@freshishealthy
@freshishealthy 3 жыл бұрын
That's a good question, InfoGuy. Way back (1800s-1900s) when boats used to sink in the NY Harbor, they had to be taxi'd out of there so as to not inhibit the flow of shipping. Those sunken ships were dragged out to Staten Island, where the city once broke them down / auctioned them. Eventually, so many piled up and fell into further disrepair and there they remain.

@@freshishealthy same for me, love these drone shots. Boat graveyard was really cool. I think there are more over by the Outerbridge that I would be really interested in seeing (you may have even shown some here, it was hard to place where some shots were taken). Plus over there is really close to NJ and I think the old LNG tanks, would be cool seeing those by drone as well! Thanks again for the great footage, beautiful work!!

When Fresh Kills Park comes fully done 1/3 of the Island will be parkland. The Greenbelt is a joy and the Bluebelt areas are a good mix. The negatives: the rates of smoking and drug use. Also known as Civil Service Island.

@Heavenly Majestic Warrior In the early 90's when Dinkins won as Mayor all the Italians/Irish freaked out & wanted to secede from the city. It ultimately did not happen. When Giuliani won in 92/93 he took SI by like a 90% margin. He rewarded SI by making the ferry free.
