Good slide playing, but I like Taj Mahal's (Henry Fredericks) version of this song. Taj had Jesse Edwin Davis play side on it, and that was the version that Duane Allman was introduced to slide guitar. You can tell because Duane, and almost everyone who covered this song swipes at least a few licks for Jess Davis!

If you want to hear a REALLY good slide lead on this song listen to Jesse Ed Davis with Taj Mahal on Taj's first album. Lean, clean, and no unnecessary notes! This is a pretty smokin' version though.

Michael Howard- It was Taj Mahal's version of this song ( kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jMdnmM-TqtXWqHU.html )from his first album titled "Taj Mahal" (1968 on Columbia Records), featuring the late Jesse Ed Davis on slide guitar that actually inspired Duane Allman to start playing slide. Greg Allman tells the story in this clip starting around the 1:49 mark: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e7KflJOdtb2XZaM.html The Allman Bros.' version is very similar to the Taj Mahal version and Duane's guitar parts fairly closely mimic those of Jesse Ed Davis. Of course the actual original version was recorded in 1928 by Blind Willie Mctell, the great 12 string blues guitarist from Georgia. I love McTell's version the most but it is quite different (acoustic 12 string guitar, no band) than those by Taj and the Allmans, which I also love. If you've never heard the Blind Willie McTell version ( kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gN1xa8h5msrbcYk.html )check it out or any of his early recordings from the 1920s and 1930s. Although he often played slide on many early recordings, he did not on Statesboro Blues; great finger picking nonetheless. Blind Willie McTell also re-emerged in the 1940s and 50s to make a few recordings but he was not nearly as amazing as he had been as a young man; hard living had taken its toll.

Frank E. Butler- I'm happy to share knowledge and/or enthusiasm for music when & where I can. I'm kind of a geek when it comes to music history, influences, and connections. One of the great things about KZfaq is that I can also provide a link too (since you're not in my living room where I can pull out a record or CD...LOL). Hope you liked the Blind Willie McTell; he was one of the greatest blues singers/guitarists from the 20s and 30s. The players from Georgia like Blind Willie McTell, Blind Blake, Barbecue Bob, etc. had a really different approach and sound than the Mississippi delta guys.

Unfortunately the real great musicians of muscle shoals will never be discovered because of the old dinosaurs in charge of the towns here, and they only have the ability to showcase old dug up fossils from 1968, instead of shining light on the real great young talent here that has absolutely no voice. Sure those old cats are great, I own their records and cherish them dearly but for the love of god, reach down and pull of something fresh from the water I’m tired of these same fish over and over just talking about what they did 50 years ago. There isn’t any good music out today because the great innovative talents of today are not being showcased. It’s sad. I could have done this song better all by myself. I’ll accept a challenge to do so in exchange to be showcased.

Well isaw spike TV do a segment on muscles shoals and the "Talent" sucked ass. Jason isbell and the Drive by Truckers sounded pretty damn good to me And im 57 heavy metal drummer from Detroit. (Also played in an all black gospel church-and im lily white) Yes they are from yesteryear but new bands BLOW from what ive seen. other than Jason and the DBTs.

Jasper Jenkins from 2011 - 2015 there was a HUGE underground wave of musicians ranging from folk, rock, rap, heavy metal, jazz, punk, and blues. It was unlike anything seriously. It was a very cool movement going on, unfortunately all the venues shut down and nobody made it out except for a select 2 who had the rocket boosters from a fashion designer here who sponsored their financial backing). It’s pretty much dead now but there was SO MUCH going on here. A town this small, and I could walk out of a solo gig with $200. Unheard of. Wish you could have seen it man. If there only could have been a spotlight here on this talent, I think there could have been something more. It was awesome. But sadly not many people saw it.

@@JRayBama cities often take their turns being showcased like in the 80s when they were signing all the hair bands and in the 90s when Seattle was getting all their grunge bands signed I'm a musician from Detroit and RC it over and over it feels great to be from a place that has a wide array of musical talents from Punk to Jazz to Blues to metal
