One moment I really found interesting was the contrast between Jeevan's depiction of Arthurs death and then at the end of the novel, his own. Interestingly, Jeevan describes the scene as awkward, and that Arthur is sort of cold and emotionless. He describes the fake stage snow as translucent plastic that clings to his skin and jacket, which falls fast in the blue-white light. What is fascinating is how the blue light can be a reflection of the alternate reality that Arthur lives in. Arthur, ironically playing King Lear at the time, was arrogant and selfish and towards the end of his life, he came to this realisation where he knew that everything he had done in his life was inauthentic - his idea of love and how he treated Miranda by cheating on her with Elizabeth and then never spending time with his son, always calling to apologise. He had grown from a young adult passionate about acting, yearning for a life of fame, to an exhausted older man, who longs for his old life on Delano Island - away from the cameras and watchful public eye. He tries to overcome this by giving away his possessions and thinks of donating money as a grand gesture to repay his selfishness. However, while he lives believing he is becoming a better person, Arthur continues in his stage-like mindset where he is acting 24/7 and his values of what is precious continue to be contorted. We see this in his depiction of the fake snow falling around him during this moment on stage. Sadly, his last thought - while previously fragmented with memories of his early life in Delano Island - was of the artificial snow shimmering in the blue light. "It fell around him... Arthur thought it was the most beautiful thing he'd ever seen." What Jeevan (and any normal human) thought looked fake, looked special to Arthur. Mandell also explores this tiny moment of life, this beauty which is found for Arthur, to show the beauty that can remain in even the simplest of forms, when all has fallen apart. Arthur's corruption is a foreshadow of the collapse that follows in society. While we all have our own preconceptions about what holds value and what determines purpose, for Arthur (who had nothing left) he was still able to find something in his last moments to grasp onto. We see this throughout the novel as the characters are all able to hope by grasping onto what is left in their own realities. Eg; Kirsten with her clippings on Arthur - her last moments before the collapse watching Arthur and how this connects her to her younger self aspiring to be an actress - so she doesn't lose her sense of self and who she was. Jeevan with being a Paramedic - purpose, Clark and the Museum of Civilisation, Tyler and his religion tying him to his parents and his inner child seeking guidance. I'd love to keep writing about this, there is so much to unpack and I love how everything in the novel connects together but I don't have the time right now! I'm a kiwi taking my NCEA exams and this video was amazing, thank you so much!

Wow! Great analysis - thanks for sharing. I love the points you made about the snow. It's always stuck out to me how Jeevan walks outside and it's snowing - like he's stepped into the real world, away from the inauthentic stage that Arthur died upon. That Mandel mentions that he feels "guiltily alive" just takes this idea further. I hope the study for your NCEA exams went well!

Hi - it's on page 238. "He’d thought it would be liberating but all he felt was fear." One of my personal favourite parts of the novel.
