I've been binge watching your videos for about a week now and I love the way you treat your birds and especially your instructional videos like this one! You clearly explain everything in a clear and calm way and give points/tips for first time bird owners. I haven't had a bird in a long while but Im working on convincing my mom to let me get one and I appreciate all of the different types of informational videos you have!! 💖💖

My cockatiel completely skipped the part about doing this in baby steps and is picking up recalling pretty quick, but of course the second she has to perform in front of someone she resorts to sitting there singing to them instead 😄

Thank you for this video! My bird will not go on her training perch or her play stand. I got her a new play stand to see if she likes that one better but today we tried the training perch-every time I put my arm or hand near the perch she would fly away. We tried this 3 or 4 times. The last time she let me rest my arm on the perch with her on my arm. This was the closest she would get to it. I hope I can help her learn to do this! She really doesn’t seem happy about it.

Thank you for your very informative video. I have a quaker parrot. Has never learned to step up on stick and bites me very hard on the hand. I try to keep my hand there with flat side facing him but somehow manages to get me. Im on a blood thinner and it bleeds forever. He will once i get him out and away from the area, I can pet and preen him. Im frustrated because I have had other birds who stick and finger trained very well. Any other ideas

This is really interesting. I was trying to teach my bird to target a target stick, but the intelligent little monster decided to skip that point and start using it at the station. I’m not sure how I can encourage them to use the beak to follow the target stick when all they want to do is land on it. I would progress onto stationing, and I’m even tempted to skip targeting and just use the treat method and go straight to doing this, but I do want them to learn to target for other tricks.

thanks for the wonderful vid first up. My question is: my African grey knows how to step up, but when I try to get him to step up, he doesn't because he is on his play stand. Even when I'm using the target stick. He follows The target stick perfectly but if my hand is in front of the stick he won't step up to go over and touch, after that he puts his head down as to get a head scratch.. any suggestion? :)

Can you skip the stick stage by teaching them to target your finger from the start. I taught my dog to target my hand. I'm getting a baby hand raised quaker next week
@FlockTalk
@FlockTalk Жыл бұрын
Technically speaking yes that’s an option, the reason we go for the stick is because it’s often less scary than a grabby hand to a lot of birds so it’s an easy way to start building trust. And birds like to be nibbly so teaching them to nibble an object won’t cause harm whereas teaching them that biting your finger could result in them drawing blood if they get overstimulated down the road. Dog hand targets work because you’re targeting a closed mouth/ nose, with birds you’re targeting the tongue which can result in some nasty bites!

@Flock-Talk alright thanks, but I ran into a problem. You see, his wing was clipped when we got him but I decided to let it grow, and Now he only flies of he either gets scared, if he is close to something he is scared of, or, on rare occasions, he just does it randomly. And what makes it even more confusing for me is that he is willing to jump a bit far to get from my hand or any other object to my shoulder, but he will only try to get from the chair to my hand if my hand is close enough for him to step on it, any idea on how to progress further?

Also, the click or spoken word delivered at the moment of the desired behavior bridges the gap between the desired behavior and delivery of reward, so the bird is not confused about what it is being rewarded for.

Hey cosmic for your bird I have been doing tons and tons of research (I'm getting a conure in 3mo) what I have heard and understood if you put your 2 fingers at the chest and tell them to step up and they do reward them. It might be a few sessions of this, but gradually add flock talk states take your hand a bit further away and repeat the command if the bird is confused you might have gone too fast session wise and might have to being your hand a bit close repeating the command and rewarding. Flock talk also has stated you can use a pointer to help aid in teaching the bird then use a clicker so they know they did good. The pointer in theory could be pointed to your finger with your other hand if the bird follows treat them she had another video on clicker training you can check out. Hope this made sense and have a great day^^

This is the closest video of your's in "topic" I could find to ask this question.. Is it Possible" to potty train small birds such as Budgerigars or parrotlets? Are they physically capable of being able to "tell" when they have to go.. I keep having people tell me that budgies and other similarly small birds can't tell but I have a really hard time believing this. I'm not planning on trying to potty train my budgies, but It just seems to me that a lot of people just flat out say that is is impossible yet, they never sound like they actually KNOW what they are talking about. Seems to me that It would be hard to do and require a tremendous amount of patience, and so people who might've tried, but gave up, go around saying it is just impossible and that only larger birds can be potty/ perch trained in this manner. I don't know why but this irritates me LOL.
