I can't understand why anybody ever voted for New Street. I avoid changing through there as much possible. The platforms are frequently packed, when changing you have to go through barriers twice, for no apparent reason, not handy if you have more than one bag and have 5 minutes to get across the station for a connection. Temple Meads is an incredible gothic cathedral, right round the corner from the city centre. Frequent railtours make things interesting too. Huddersfield outside is visually stunning too AND has cats and pubs. Haven't had the pleasure of Wemyss.

New Street is/was awful, especially that thing of split platforms with a train departing from each end, very confusing, not to mention the smoky diesel loco I always seemed to have to stand next to, ticking over and choking everyone. Not a good idea in an underground, enclosed space. Huddersfield, though, at the end of the Ale Trail, magnificent building and two cracking pubs, what's not to love!

Top tip if you don't like going through the barriers while changing there. Go to the B end of the platforms where you can access all 12 platforms without passing through a gate line. Bigger toilets that end, too ✌️

It was considered for the building's unusual multi-functionality. Unlike many stations which have shops inside, New St is right inside a shopping centre & the easiest way to walk from north to south of the city centre (walking around adds about 5-10 minutes). It therefore moves passengers from where they were to where they want to go (the whole point of a railway station) better than any other. Its aesthetics were not what it was on the short-list for.

There is two bridges at the B end. One links Hill Street to Navigation Street in Birmingham. Barriers only for exiting to those roads. Also the B end bridge to the concourse. So you can change trains without using gates. So don't use the A end of the station. If you get off the train at say 5A, walk down to 5B.

The famous station cats definitely pushed Huddersfield over the top. But it's not *just* the cats: it also takes a Feline P.R. department to establish a gigantic cult of celebrity cats around them too. Books, toys, articles and the press, fundraisers and so on. Good for Felix and Bolt.

I was using those tunnels in the early 1970's when i worked there. Not only did Royal mail use it, it was also used by the Parcels which was based in the Parcels Office on Platform 12. One of the most unusual things I had to move through those tunnels was coffins (occupied) because many Irish People who lived in Birmingham would often send their bodies home to be buried. I used to have to escort the coffins from platform 12, through the tunnels on to Platform 6 where they would be handed over to the Guard on the Holyhead Boat Train for transport to Ireland. I had to make sure that the Guard signed for them before they where loaded onto the train.

Birmingham Station in the city centre? I could hardly find an exit when I was unfortunate enough to arrive there in the summer! Be careful what you wish for. @@DerekHartley many, many times. I regularly change trains there. The idea of "main entrance" is confusing. I assume you're meaning the side that opens out towards the bull ring with TK Maxx outside? Yet for most stations the "main entrance" would be the one with the tram stop outside and opening on to the actual Street it's named after. It's more confusing for people with the number of other exits from grand Central on the level above. Plus that itself allows you to connect across and through the Bull Ring to opposite Moor Street without having to go outside.

There might be more than on tunnel under the platforms at New Street, but public access down there used to be possible. The only way to have lift access from street to platform was to go via the tunnel. I did this about 10 years ago when I changed at New Street with my bicycle. No longer allowed since the rebuild in 2015, as all platforms now have lift access direct to concourse level.

Reasons to vote for Birmingham New Street, according to the deputy station manager and his assistant. 1. It's the only station on the network that's at the centre of its city. WHAT? 2. It caters for 170,000 passengers per day. WHAT? 3. We're at the heart of the community. WHAT? 4. We put on a lot of activities. WHAT? 5. The size of the station is equal in area to thirteen tennis courts WHAT?. Well, I suppose that makes up for New Street being the most bland and uninteresting place to be on the planet, but if you like catching your train in a cave, this is for you. Not surprised Bristol Temple Meads came in last, after years of underinvestment. It's the Poundland of railways stations. In the last 30 years the only new infrastructure is some new ticket barriers to the left and right of the main entrance. There is no retail in and around the station unlike the brand new Birmingham New Street and the only shop is a small WHSmith in the main entrance. The forecourt is a crowded mess (unhelped by Bristol City Council's new road traffic management). The planned electrification from London Paddington with the rumoured relaunch of the original Brunel Passenger Shed for London trains was cancelled when electrification stopped at Chippenham. This station servers over 15 million people annually and deserves better.

It could be your last time seeing a 142 pacer Vicki . Next stop for it is either Booth’s at Rotherham or EMR Kingsbury unless it’s very lucky and preserved. Huddersfield looks like a Wetherspoon pub from its frontage .

i had to use birmingham new street in sept when my train from manchester to reading was cancelled but the train started at birmingham i found new street station complicated to get round and the platform levels very noisy not good for people with disabilities

whom could possibly have nominated Birmingham (new street) over Birmingham (moor street) also, I don't understand why the same trains have different names?

I'm going to vote for the forgotten stations of Coastway West, between Brighton and Portsmouth. They have had delays, all sorts of problems, strikes, etc etc, but the staff have been great despite all the complaints. The stations are not great architecture, and don't have much of a Brunel vibe about them. But, you know, they get me to work, and the electrostar trains are a nice place to spend an hour.

I can offer you the chance to live in Huddersfield, but work in Bradford, which is what I used to do, but hourly direct service from station. Have got my invite to station for New Year already agreed, once cleared after cancer review. Dont know if that is from Andy, Felix, Bolt or all 3 mind, lol?

can't believe Birmingham got into these 'world cup semi finals'. it's in the city centre?..oh wow! so is St.Pancras, Edinburgh Waverley and Liverpool Lime Street who all beat New street for architechture. New street is just a concrete 60's yukism.

Victoria Station in London is right in the city centre. What does the Birmingham bloke mean about NS being the only stn that is in the city centre. There are loads.
@TheRip72
@TheRip72 4 жыл бұрын
Oxford St is the city centre. That is 2 stops away from Victoria on the Victoria line. You don't walk through Victoria Stn to go anywhere, you only walk there to catch a train. New St is right in the middle & is the main walking route from N to S Brum. The way around is a long detour.
