Thank you for sharing. The fact that you took APs sophomore, Junior, and senior year only in the areas that you were passionate about and still got into such great schools is so amazing and refreshing for me to hear. Obviously the classes you take are important, but they’re not EVERYTHING…especially if one struggles in them. I plan on taking four APs next year and then maybe five senior year (I only took one this year), and all these KZfaq videos of people reacting to 10 AP Scores or saying how they got into x college with 20 APs can be stressful. Thank you for easing mine and I’m sure other people’s concerns.

What set you apart is your concentration. It is very unique that you as an international Chinese student are passionate about classics and sets you miles apart from other well-accomplished Asians who are obsessed with engineering and science and want to become doctors or engineers or have accomplishments in classical music or another instrument. This set you apart and made you unique and attractive to those Ivy leagues. I want my Asian friends to try to be unique and pursue non-traditional stereotypical extracurricular as-politics, social justice rtc.

I actually managed to get at least eight hours of sleep every day (well maybe not weekends) up until senior year of high school! Go to bed at 11:00 pm and get up at 7:20 am (I go to a boarding school, so it saves me the time to travel to school). And weekends are usually for off-time! I go to bed late on weekends mostly because I am hanging out with friends or watching movies hahaha. But tbh, doing what I love most of the time does not tire me at all!

She can't as she is not a US citizen/green card holder. She will need F-1 visa to attend Harvard or Yale. If she applies as out of state, she will be put into out of state domestics students group, then she cannot apply for F-1 visa and attend the school.

Disclaimer: This may seem exhaustive and overwhelming, but I promise it works. I have seen a significant number of ivy admits who got in with less than 5 Bs and Cs over their high school career. The most important years to a college are your Junior and Senior Year. This is not to say that slacking in freshman year and sophomore year guarantees admission to tier 1 institutions. You can definitely still get admitted, specifically if you: 1. Excelled given your socioeconomic background. 2. Accomplished tier 1 activities in your extracurriculars (published research, international awards, etc). 3. Had a sudden rise of grades in Junior and Senior year. 4. Wrote spectacular essays, personal statment, etc. You can still get in, but I have to be honest about this: you will have to get your grades up. There are multiple ways to do this, just to name a few: 1. Score straight As on all upcoming assessments. (You may have to evaluate your study habits and develop an evidence-based study routine; check out Gohar Khan on youtube. Tips: 1. read aloud, 2., revise *immediately* after reading a paragraph----our brains forget 70% of information learned within 24 hours, making revision an obligation. 3. know exactly* what to expect on the test and prepare for it----I personally know that the most difficult question from my quizzes will be on the final test; I learned this the hard way, but you can ask your teacher for practice papers. 4. correct your mistakes mindfully and actively---- never fix a mistake just to fix it; learn from it so that it never happens again. 5. Revise mistakes made on quizzes and master them. After scoring a B- on a maths test, I tried this and got an A- on the next test, then another A-, and now I don't get less than 100. Reading aloud lead to an overall 20 point increase in my Algebra 1 course. I literally once learned 58 World Geography test questions in 90 minutes on one night and got a 97 percent on the test the next day. I did not make a single mistake on the section that had those 58 questions. That is the power of reading aloud. This was an emergency, so please remember to do it for emergencies not for the sake of cramming, otherwise it's an effective method of studying which I swear by. Reading aloud is an integral part of my study routine.) 2. Take honors and AP courses. (They weight more than your regular courses, thus increasing your GPA.). 3. Get a tutor. (There are free tutoring services on Schoolhouse, Takelessons, and Learn to Be) 4. Invest time in online resources. (Khan Academy is free) 5. Last but not least, try to determine why your grades aren't as high as you would like them to be, then find a concrete solution to each cause, and finally implement each solution. Here are some reasons why my grades needed saving, and what I did to reverse the reasons: 1. I didn't get enough sleep. (Sleep deprivation decreases focus and memory, so I delegated things that kept me from sleeping long enough: morning chores, morning showers, hefty course load, uncontrolled social media. I did my chores at night, showered at night, and got ahead of my course work by doing extra work on weekends.) 2. I took tests I wasn't ready for. (Daily revision or practice of *all* learned upcoming test questions eliminated this. I typically start thorough revision three days before my final test----I have four to twelve per subject, per grade. I revise out loud and don't leave a question until I get it right from memory. I also practice topics I made mistakes on, if I know from the quizzes that they'll be on the test.) 3. I was trying to absorb too much information, thus retaining next to nothing. (I tweaked my schedule so that I don't study more than 4 hours thrice a week; every other hour I spend in school is revision.) 4. I shied away from difficult or unfamiliar topics. (I now actively seek them out and determine to master them. I've found genuine satistfaction in revising, practicing, and correcting my problem areas to perfection. My grades have never been higher.) 5. I was a horrible test taker. (I learned test techniques, such as looking at difficult topics first, marking them, and moving onto easier ones, pacing myself, and checking my answers, especially for common mistakes I'd made before.)
