I just hope that from now on we can see the Dark Angels begin to really take on the Knight culture that they should have. Instead of hunting for the fallen I'd like to see them written doing more knightly deeds, slaying demons and monsters on feudal worlds, dueling chaos champions, stalking the shadows where dark forces lurk. I'd like to see the Dark Angels create another order, one that has individual Angels traveling the Galaxy and essentially going on quests to protect backwater places that are under threat by forces and creatures that do not require a full military response but something an individual swordsman can handle.

He's been absent for 10,000 years. Of course he's going to determining what the situation with his sons before he acts. I do believe he'll reform his Legion. The successor chapters are based on the original organisation of his legion. I think the situation will build to when that happens.

I can understand why the Lion hasn't tried to reform the legion. For all it's firepower, a massive legion is a lumbering thing, easy for the enemy to predict and evade. With his new psychic powers allowing him to traverse the universe without the need for the warp, he can appear amongst his successors when they are in the midst of combat, galvanizing them with his iconic appearance, battle prowess and tactics. Lion El'Johnson is now a threat everywhere and nowhere in the Imperium at the same time. In time he might strike more fear amongst the Emperor's foes than ever before.

Imagine being 2 unforgiven successor chapter members just walking down the hallway casually chatting about combat techniques and your primarch just shadow walk waltz in around the corner

The Lion seems to be still trying to make sense of some stuff, but from what he knows he acts with more caution. I guess with how he dealt with Luthor lead to what the Dark Angels as a whole are today, so we will see a more cautious one. I see him also being ok with Successors as long as they stick to some basically laws he set into place as a bonus of these Chapters is having different ways to fight away from his usual way of fighting, having some be specialist.

The impression I got from reading the codex supplement was very much in line with your own thoughts Rho. That is to say, he appears to be very much observing, taking stock of what he has available to him and just getting to know his sons - all of them, not just the DAs. He's going out and fighting alongside all of them and getting their measure. It was interesting seeing the description of their thoughts of him - that he was much more of "a fey creature" than they thought he would be where he sort of mystically appears out of nowhere and that when he looks at them, they feel an incredible sense of dread as a predator considers potential prey; even so much as when he's not around, they still feel like they are being watched. I mean, none of this is new with the Lion - 30k Lion had this effect on people all the time, but nuLion seemed to be aware of it and at least tried to not freak people out. All in all, his return appears to be cordial with his sons where both sides are respectfully checking each other out. It's not how I thought it was going to go - I was all-in for Lion uniting everyone from the get-go and having no more secrets, etc. But here we are and I'm still ok with this approach; after decades, it's just so damn refreshing to see their story moving forward at last !

His second book is taking forever. In Son of the forest(SOF) We see the lion grow as a man, he finds his humanity and his purpose as its protector and his fathers assailed aspect gifted him his shield because of it. He learned patience, humility and forgiveness. He also learned his limits thanks to his aging. Lets not forget he was arrogant and distant in 30k, mainly because he was unequaled and therefore too far above humanity to really care for the individual. At the end of son of the forest he was close to weeping, his grief for his beloved brother overcame him and news that he was not alone and that Gman lives was gave him hope. Both emotions beyong him in 30k. So now he will be first getting his sons in order, but instead of barging in and making demands like the young lion would have done, he's using tact and interpersonal relations, ironically like his brother Gman would have. I imagine he will appear in Gmans chambers when they reunite. I dont think he'll do the parade ground display like in unremembered empire, Gman is on crusade anyway. Theory. Further down the line, the lion will free his father, or at least help his injured and mute soul escape its tormentors. It's all very exciting and a decade in the making for me. It cant come soon enough.

Lore has since the beginning made it clear that DA never really separated. The chapters coordinated with each other and the current chapter master of Dark Angels was treated as a supreme chapter master. Even the Inquisition was aware of this but didn't act on it because they needed a plan b if Black Templars as an example would go rogue. And as already mentioned... just say "fallen" and most DA chapters would suddenly be present and strangely well coordinated 🤣

I think the Redeemed will prove to be excellent spies.

In any other circumstance, someone secretly talking to invisible voices that make you feel uncomfortable, you purge them for heresy shenanigans. But it's ok for The Lion to do.

I'm curious to see The Unforgiven interacting with the Redeemed and how the two parties will act when Lion isn't present at the moment.

The Lion, was and probably still is the greatest strategist in Imperial history. I have faith in his actions, even if I may not comprehend them and only have speculation as to his coming plans. Because in three very simple words, The Emperor Protects.

Love the new Lion and Dark Angels lore. Azriel is no Corswain but he is very good.

Love the idea that he's speaking with the Watchers. Why wouldn't he just use encrypted vox for the risen? Great suggestion Wolf Lord. Plus the watchers have frequently been described as being more prevalent deeper in the Rock.

Why would anyone in the Dark Angels be surprised when information is withheld from them? It's a chapter where you spend most of your time learning not to ask certain questions and not to question those in charge. It's the chapiter that keeps training it's members that this is just how things are supposed to work. It's not like the Dark Angels are that one strange secretive secy and everyone else is a open book. Not asking questions is the default wherever you go in the Imperium

Congrats on the box turning up! We may have a potential problem for the Lion. As well as seeing what the Dark Angels & successor chapters, I think the Lion is guaging the lay of the land regarding this Imperium. With his ability to move about without the need of Warp capable vessels, he can pretty much go where he feels the need. So far, the Lion has been unimpressed with the Imperium. The Lion favours a return to older forms established by the Emporer.

I think he needs to settle matters within his legion and his sons. He was one of those Primarchs that knew all of his space marines. Also what he does fits him 100%. Always vigilant. Always observing. Always hunting. Always making everyone around him feel uneasy. He definitely waits for Cypher and Luther and he is more cautious.

It by the will of the emperor and the of his golden throne that made my day. For the Imperium of man for the hunt for the emperor. For loyalty is, it's own reward ✊️🦁💚

El'Jonson feels he previously made a disastrous mistake judging his sons. I suspect he's being careful not to do the same again. Pushing everyone back together could go horribly wrong, whatever happened with Luthor it wasn't stopped by Primarch charisma.

Less reasoning with Johnson and his sons, more he has the ability to sense chaos and can determine taint… and if you’re not tainted he will likely interfere with interrogations.

The codex’s explanation on treatment and inclusion of the Fallen/ Risen bothers me because it flys in the face of an entire book’s narrative.

Just recently read the book. My favorite so far, have read just a couple, Devastation of Baal, Fall of Cadia & Avenging son. I love all of them, but as the Dark Angels are my favorite legion, the Lion book was by far my favorite

i think the 'secret' only the lion knows about are the risen. its pretty clear that the new inner circle companions come from amongst the risen; however in the new codex they're described as 'onimous figures' or smth like that, showing that the unforgiven are kept in the dark about the companions true identity by the lion. i suppose the lion doesnt trust the unforgiven enough to tell them that their arch enemy for over 10.000 years are now his closest allies.

My theory is that the Lion feels a bigger connection to the older marines, the risen, than the newer chapters. He must find them wanting in almost every department. It also must be a lot harder for him to convince other fallen to join him with the "help" of the unforgiven, and he can't just change 10000 years of paranoid "tradition" by word alone. I think that in a way the Lion is trying to walk on thin ice, trying to appeal to both sides. Just another secret for the first...

Legion strength is necessary to confront the Tyranids and chaos.

I could see slowly over time the lions ability healing the rock and possibly caliban, like if the angels can re-take wormwood and land the rock on it his warp power returning caliban to original form

I love the idea that the lion is back and he's kinda like yeah this isn't my legion anymore I could command it like it was but it's not. It's its own beast now. And Azreal trying to give the lion his helmet back. Now just need cypher and to get his sword back

The biggest thing I can think of that the Lion would know that Azrael wouldn't is the existence of the Dreadwing Sacristy on board the Invincible Reason. The modern DA's dont even know what the heck the Dreadwing is, and would lack the ability to open many of the chambers, since in the Lion's Primarch Novel we saw that certain vaults require idents from OTHER wings like the Ironwing that don't exist in 40k. Good opportunity for GW to make some new models, armed with wacky DAoT weapons from the Dreadwing, i think

Is there any indication yet of why the Lion had such a huge personality change (from arrogant and aloof to caring and calm) just by being asleep?

What if he's talking to his brothers, the ones we think are lost or missing but actually on missions yet to be revealed. I have little hope thats the case, but it would be interesting if the lion is convening secret meetings with the "shadow" imperium forces (hidden primarchs, valdor, that one grey knight stuck in the warp, etc). He is the next best warmaster and the only character that could keep a secret...even from the narrator.

Im thinking of writing a short on how possibly Asmodai gets the backhand from the Lion' for taking pleasure in torturing what could well have been loyal astartes and being sent on a death quest to redeem himself... Thoughts..?

I am a bit surprised that the Lion hasn't brought his legion together. I would have expected some sort of crusade for them. But I also wouldn't be surprised if he just gave different chapters orders since he wants to protect humanity and they have orders to reclaim sections or spread out to increase what they can defend.

My thing is tho, why is he allowing the interrogations to still happen? I understand the hunt still to gather his son's but in the sons of the Forest book it seemed he wanted to save everyone he could so why would he allow these to keep happening?

If I was Lion El Johnson, I'd keep the Unforgiven as they are, with orders for the chapters to spread out about Imperium Nihilus to defend what they can, while forming the Risen into their own irregular "chapter" as his own personal strike force to respond to particularly dangerous issues whenever the local DA chapter can't handle them.

I think the watchers are the ones that lead the Lion to those Fallen he should talk to and that is what is happening within the secret chambers. Its also good to see that GW hasn't started to turn all Fallen into the good guys. It would have been such a boring move and taken depth out of the tragedy. Finally - we desperately need the next book. After Cypher: Lord of the Fallen failing to deliver anything really new for the mysteries, I am so tired of waiting for the story to move on after nearly 30 of following it.

I’m kinda disappointed so far in El’ Johnson. I haven’t read any novels but from sources like this one I’ve come to believe The Lion to be a take action type of guy. The I know exactly what needs to be done and without waiting for approval by some committee. I realize after some of his failures he might be more cautious and considerate of the big picture but he should still be the same man at his core. After seeing how tactful Guilliman’s approach to the current Imperium I just wanted to see that contrast. Maybe a “ good cop bad cop” approach with the returned Primarchs.

The first Primarch and the last Primarchs have a LOT of similarities. I think the First and 20th Legion were both created as different types of special forces even among the Astartes. Some Legions like the Iron Warriors, Imperial Fists and Ultramarines are more mainline forces. And then you have the Dark Angels, White Scars, Night Lords, Thousand Sons and Alpha Legion as more special operation forces and I think the Dark Angels and Alpha Legion in particular mirror each other.

a risen set would be a great way to bring new first born minis into the current setting, GW definitely knowns people want them, and GW loves money so its a win win lol
