My father joined the army at 14 as an apprentice (he was orphaned at 14). He soldiered through WWII as a REME engineer, battling with the desert rats in North Africa and then on to Monte Casino (one of the worst battles), Crete, France, Germany. Whenever I hear this song, it means a lot to me. And makes me wonder what happened to those young soldiers with such huge smiles on their faces.

i have one thing to say: these were the best days of life.

I love the way the band put a positive spin on this song within the context of the British Army. However, the older version seems fitting as I watch Kabul fall and remember almost 500 Brits who gave their lives in that war.

we played it every Friday on the last cleaning, on a ghetto blaster. Eight soldiers in the room and I can still remember the names of my comrades over 30 years later. One of the most intense times in my life, if not the most intense.

I listened to this song when I enlisted into the British army and it reminds me of the comradeship that I have. I feel blessed to survive Afghan but not so blessed to suffer with the mental trauma of the war zones I went through. When I miss my comrades I play this song and immediately I feel like I am back in my old army barracks. God bless all who serve for our queen and Country, past and present.

A friend at Sandhurst served in the Rhodesian military and on the first night in camp they were woken up at 2 am by a fire drill, assembled on the main square and did military drill for four hours whilst this song blasted out on powerful speakers on a loop. I think that is AWESOME. I’d not have been able to get the smile off my face had I been there - I think that’s a genius level introduction to soldiering.

Salute to all the soldiers...my dad was in military he is retired now.

I remember signing an early entry fax (!) In 1998 to get to the German military service in time to be ready for uni and once I got out of the post office to send the fax and sat back in the car, this song played on the radio. No joke. One of my weirdest moments in life and I will always remember...

Saw Quo in Den Bosch Netherlands with this tour. Carried my mate Dicky on my shoulders on Sunday with this song. The next day he got killed at 19 years old in a car crash. We Played this song at his funeral, now 38 years later, i still feel sad when i hear the song.

I listened to the original before I reported to Basic training and thought of it when I saw one of my fellow recruits moderately injured (nearly lost a few fingers). I know the old version was written with the draft in mind but both versions provide the good and bad sides of the military. Life can be terrible but meaningful. I love it.
