Francis Xavier Staub (c. 1867-1941) was a Swiss-born organist, composer, conductor and teacher, who lived and worked in England from around 1890 until his death. The “Prelude and Fugue in D minor” is a big splashy piece, using soft stops as well and full organ. First published in 1902, in Book 14 of “The Cathedral Voluntaries, for the Organ, Harmonium, and American Organ,” the Reed Organ Society included this music in its recent Quarterly magazine. (Vol. XXXVI, No. 2, 2017) The instrument is an Estey chapel-model reed organ, Style Z, built in Brattleboro, Vermont in 1904, recently restored by our friend Michael Pierceall in Pasadena, California.
