True story. The first car I bought at a (Honda) dealer's was a manual. I couldn't drive a manual, so I just accompanied them on the test drive, and then bought the car. The sales manager then took me to the road behind the dealership and taught me out to drive a stick. Driving that thing home was the scariest experience of my life, but I learned to love the stick. Pro tip: get REALLY comfortable with stopping on hills before using the car on dates.

You think that's scary. Try this: I have polio with very limited use of my right leg, somehow my friend was able to teach me how to drive stick. Then he had me drive his car home in the middle of rush hour---in stop & go traffic! I was sweating bullets the whole time. Though, I don't own a manual I'm thankful for my buddy and the experience because in a pinch I'm confident I can drive just about any car despite my physical handicap.

Yeah, because there is no need, since it is hard to find manual car in the US, it is called progress. In Europe people buy manual since it is cheaper, but the usage of automatic increases year by year and with EV vehicles stick will become obsolete and Europeans eventually catch up with Americans in this. But by this time Americans will use already self driving cars
@cecarblanco9933

it’s so weird to me that people in the US cannot drive stick. here in europe, you have the option to do an automatic-only driver’s license, but literally no one does that, everyone learns to drive stick, even if they jump into an automatic car afterwards. the majority of new cars are also still sold with manual transmission here. I have experience with both and I’ll pick manual every time.

In Europe most people buy manual since it is cheaper, in US is actually other way around(manual hard to find and it will be more expensive).
