When you learn to say NO to something, just remember you're saying YES to something else that may be what you want even more!

My big thing is traveling. I saved for months (especially when I was going through chemo for 6 months this past year). Now I get to go to New Hampshire and Maine later this week (Lived in NH for 13 years!) and going to NC the following week with my oldest two grand kids to see my daughter and her family. No regrets on spending the money because I saved and kept my eye on the prize! Congratulations on your new home!

You are spot on Kate!! When I was a kid I remember my mom would say would you rather have that thing or go to Disneyland when we were saving to go there. Having a bigger goal helps us stay focused on what we really want.

Yess! I just bought a house last fall, and I made a "list" in my Amazon account called "New House." Every time I wanted something for the house, I put it in that list. I don't think I've ever actually bought anything from that list, and I've been living in the new house for 9 months. It's fun to daydream as long as you have the boundary set up.

One of the best things that helps me keep focused is constantly (at least daily) referring back to my written budget & spending log for a reality check & reminder of where I'm at.

Love love the idea of the photo on my phone!!! I just made my coffee and I’m watch you. Yesterday while watching a shopping channel, I ordered 4 tops. I really do need tops, they were $100! 😱. Within minutes I cancelled them. Keeping on track, with my eyes on the prize!! We are next, you are the 3rd person I follow on KZfaq that has gotten their house 🏡 this year. I told hubby, I would love to be in our house by my birthday, October 25th.

You are one smart young lady! I am so glad that I learned to be Frugal and content with what I have. I have to remind myself that there are things that I "want", but do I really need them, usually the answer is "no". Recently I had to have a car repair done, it was $300, boy howdy was I reminded the importance of saving, car repair done and paid for. Because I drive an older car (2010) I know that I have to be prepared for repairs. (At least I don't have a monthly car payment) WOOHOO!. Keep up the great work. I look forward to seeing your new home

I find myself buying lots of little things. Plus this whole Covid situation has brought out the need to stock up on stuff. Now I think it’s good to stock what I know we need. But do I need to buy 2 years of stuff? The “fear” of not being able to buy when I need it is something I’m having to push down.

'Natural' Kate is just gorgeous and i love seeing that side of you! I have a meeting about my volunteer work tonight with all the other volunteers, about getting our project back up and running as it's been shut down during Covid, and my first thought was, "Crap! Gonna have to put on some makeup and wear something decent!" lol

Hi Kate. I must tell you about how my friends thought I was mad when I saved the deposit for my first home. This was 1976. I took the same attitude as you. I saved £500 over 2 years. Earning £64 a month from a full time job. Extra from babysitting and cleaning. I was very focused. The solicitor said to me on completion. "I hope you know what you're doing"........!!! Well it turned out I did. Love your channel. Straight to the point. Too many you tubers are full of waffle!!!!!!

I'm retired and won't or don't spend anything till I get my lightbill. That is 2 weeks w/o spending. Then I pay light bill and grocery shop with my list I have made. Being able to save so much more that way. Thinking of down sizing and get an apartment. No more grass mowing to pay for. I do a lot of your frugal tips. Thank you for sharing. ❤😷❤

Definitely eyes on the prize!!! Everything you stated makes so much sense-basically everything you said really relates to me in a different way- I’m really trying to lose weight- I joined weight watchers at the end of December just before New Year’s-I have lost 31 pounds so far-two of my main goals are to exercise and to drink water-and basically what you said in this video really also applies to losing weight-

If online shopping is a trigger, delete those apps, block those emails.catalogues, atraight into trash can. Buy only what you actually need, after searching your entire home to see what you already have.make meals out of what you have.brown bag it to school, work, etc focus on your 4 walls.living, transport, food, medical needs, ansolute must have.not eating out.not starbucks.not beauty treatments at salons.do that yourself.its cheaper.

A tip for people like me that love Starbucks. You can youtube just about any drink and theres copycat videos on how to make your favorite Starbucks. 😁 i was spending about $14 everytime we went to get me and my husband a venti matcha and our Daughter chocolate milk. Now i just make our own and i keep a half gallon of chocolate milk that i can half with regular milk.

Such good advice!! If shopping is a trigger for me, I stay out of the stores and I don't allow myself to shop online. Of course I always have a "wish list" going. If I'm always buying the little things ($50 or less) then I will never be able to buy the big things. Something that helps me to stay on track is a visual savings tracker that I got on debtfreecharts.com.

This one.simple. Why am i spending all my money? What is going on.am i upset, bored, angry, sad, etc. Next, redirect my energy.nothing wrong with a small treat once in a while, but if you blow all your money, that is a big problem. Ask yourself:is this item really worth the extra hours of work?is this worth debt?is it worth the stress of not having any money for needs?

If i see too large a balance i REALLY want to spend it. I just moved a chunk into an ISA as i need it for later in the year so cant spend it now. But i use sink funds and percentages to decide on extra spending categories. Im allowed to spend 10% of disposable income on me. If i dont want it one month i save it for when i do

Faux budget Works always super! 📒Also befor buying any item. Having a goal and a budget and regularly update it🗓✏, slows me down 📉. because l know l can spent this much at this time and have to choose. 💰Savings is first set a side and for a good reson! ( any one can accidently spent if it is free in your wallet or bankaccount). I do not search online on shopwebsides for fun💻,. 📬 and have a note on my mailbox saying I have everything allready so i do not need advertisement brochures . ( IN THE NETHERLANDS EVERY HOUSEHOLD GETS THEM EVERY WEEK FROM ALL THE SHOPS IN THE AREA normaly). I am not getting daily/ weekly ads in my 📧e mail from stores l sometimes visit. When l need or want something because the old one is broken or i really miss like plant in the corner of our room we fix it if we have budget for is or we pause⏸ and the item goes on next months budget➡️📒.

I set up new habits and new systems right after I make the goal. For instance, I impulse shop. 1. I decided not to do that action. 2. I decided what I would do with the money I didn't spend. 3. I decided I would save it. 4. Next time, I was in town...hello... there I was, impulse shopping anyway. Sigh.... So I regrouped. My desire is strong but clearly not as strong as my need to impulse shop. How do I do this differently? REPEAT STEPS 1, 2, 3. 4. NEXT TIME I WENT TO TOWN I BOOKED SOMETHING ELSE I HAD TO DO BACK TO BACK with my legitimate reason I was in town I didn't have time to shop, or I would be late. TIME after that, when I WENT TO TOWN, I MET MY FRIEND AT A CERTAIN scheduled place and time. This became a new habit. I stopped impulse shopping because I was doing something else. IN OTHER WORDS, I CHANGED NOT ONLY NOT SHOPPING, but ALSO NOT BEING ABLE TO SHOP. I started to develop systems that supported my desire to not shop. Hard work and failures. The first time I left my visa home, I was BELIEVING IF I DIDN'T HAVE IT I WOULDN'T USE IT. WELL, MY bank card did not work. I was mortified. However, I persisted in my resolve not to carry visa, this new action became a habit a new system and voila I didn't have to use will power or desire to not spend money because I did not have the darn card burning in my wallet. I try and try and try to change how I live so I can be successful. Some ideas stick and others don't. But the ones that do work plug up another hole in the money bucket. Over the last year, I have changed many of my behaviors. In fact, my whole life. Instead of watching my old regular entertainment, I watch men and women talk about frugal living, stoism, recycling, gardening, budgeting, pantry prepping, lifestyle, goals..... Then I try this and that. Slowly, I have transformed my financial life. Try reading Atomic Habits. There are many excellent books out there that I use as a resource. This one resonates for me. Good luck.
