A very quick and easy video on how to check the accuracy of the the display on your STC1000 / STC-1000 temperature controller. The same method can be used on any controller with a probe (inkbird etc). You can also use this method on other temperature controllers like the inkbird.
Method -
1. Fill glass with crushed/broken ice and then top up with cold tap water to the top level of the ice.
2. Place probe into the centre of the ice/water. Try not to touch the bottom or sides of the glass.
3. Wait for the controller display to stabilize
4. If it doesn't read 0.0C or 32F, then go into "F4" function of the controller and adjust up or down by the amount you are out and press the set button. The display should now read 0C or 32F.
Any questions please ask.

Cheers Dino, was looking to re-calibrate my STC-1000, of which I have now done after watching your video, borrowed a fluke temp probe of my fridgey mate & it matches up with the STC 😃👍

This is great way to do it. I do however have a few questions, just because it is ice doesn't mean it necessarily at 0 Celsius. For example most household freezers are set to around -18C. So I suppose it is worth dropping a thermometer and checking the temperature of the concoction.
@tubedinoz
@tubedinoz 7 жыл бұрын
Will D Hi. That's the reason you have to add water to the ice. It brings the temperature to 0C. There is science behind the reason, which I don't understand , but it is a recognised technique. Cheers

+Will D Nice one, glad it worked. I just did a bit of reading on the reason for mixing cold water and ice together. Apparently because 0C is the melting point of ice and also the freezing point of water, the temperature stays at an equilibrium of 0C until all the ice disappears. Happy brewing to you too. Cheers Will

Dino now do the same with boiling water and see if the STC is accurate. Most cheap electronic devices (and analogue) are not normally accurate at both ends of temperature ranges.

I noticed a comment on a "new to homebrew tom" video where he did the same for a Rex c100 PID controller. It said you want to calibrate as near to the desired temperature. Seeing as the mash and boil are both over 50 degrees C it would probably be more accurate to calibrate at boiling temp with water.

Good point. I'll check it out. Cheers

I use my controller for both fermentation and mashing, so the 0C test will be closer to the fermentation temperature, but I get your point and I'll check it against boiling water tonight to see how accurate it is for mashing at the other end of the scale. Cheers

lol it was me that made that comment. I trained for 4 years in instrumentation doing temperature, pressure, levels and three term control (PID)

its a good idea but just cause its ice doesn't mean its 0degrees c probably be lower temp my freezer keeps ice at -18
@tubedinoz
@tubedinoz 4 жыл бұрын
It's to do with the mixture of water and ice balancing out the temperature to 0C. Found this online - Under normal atmospheric pressure conditions, a good mixture of ice and water at thermal equilibrium will be 0 degrees Celsius. This is both the freezing/melting point of water. Cheers
@ilovevideosyoutube9985
@ilovevideosyoutube9985 Жыл бұрын
how do you now that ice is 0 ? 🤔
@tubedinoz
@tubedinoz Жыл бұрын
A mixture of pure water and pure water ice will quickly reach a temperature of exactly 32 degree F or 0 degrees C. That actually is the definition of the calibration temperature for temperature scales. A water ice mixture is often used to calibrate precision thermometers
