Great lil' technique! The Arousor -> EQP -> Arousor reminds me of a neat trick I saw over on Weiss Advice channel, where Matt would take a track, put an EQ with a low shelf on it, take out a few dB of the lows, then add a distortion (of choice), and finally add the same EQ after the distortion but boos the low end shelf an inverse amount. This allowed the track to saturate, but without the low end blowing up the sound and served as a means to shape the character of the distortion. Seeing as distortion also compresses, I would be very curious to see some sort of a hybrid between these two techniques. Great video brotha!

You can saturate specific frequencies with tools like Saturn too!

@@andYz00m Ozone has a handy multiband saturator. I know its a mastering tool but it can be useful for mix busses (when i don't have loads of money for other specialised plugins). I have thought about using the opposite effect when there isn't enough bass in something but it appears you have enough bass frequencies or would be inappropriate to add more (such as in mastering a track usually!), it just needs more overtones for example, so boost bass saturation then taming the bass back down-- the reason is the bass kind of smears up higher due to the saturation overtones.

Love this trick and the Arousor as well, great video! " You can't take beef jerky and make it back into a steak" Best quote of all time!

I find if you push the SSL mix buss compressor on the drum buss at 4 to 1 or higher and the release on auto, it gives a really similar vibe. Especially if you are running a parallel drum buss with saturation. It's wild how there are so many ways to create similar effects.

Really enjoyed watching your process … your whole approach to recording in general is really nice and the beef jerky analogy made me chuckle … nice !!

Attack on the kickdrum: I use the Audix D6 on the inside and a Lauten FC-357 on the outside. To date this is my absolute favorite combo. The D6 has fantastic attack, and the FC-357 has incredible low end haptics.

Yup, that works well. If you want even more attack, steal a trick from the realm of live sound and drop a boundary condenser inside the kick - Beta 91, e901, TG D71, or whatnot. Fantastic transient response, and more linear than a D6 - when you want that sound.

@@compucat I have used the boundary mic on several occasions, and it certainly works. While not my personal favorite aesthetic, it's here when the need arises.

@@compucat The best sounding boundary mic for this purpose is actually the $70 Behringer BA-19a... swear to God try it, its absolutely astouding. I have it mounted with a Kelly Flatz in all of my kick drums, its just bonkers good!

@@compucat I do sometimes use a Neumann M150 right next to the beater (on the outside, to the right of a right handed drummer's foot.) If the M150 is being used elsewhere on the kit or in the room I'll put an omni lavalier right above the beater instead.

For some stuff I do, a bass drum with no port on the reso is a necessity for the open sound I want. That being said I still want some attack. I use an RE20 about 7 inches away from the reso head for the low end and I slap a hohner harp blaster mic half an inch from where the kick beater hits the batter. I use a wooden beater as well. Since I don’t use a bottom snare mic, any bleed of the snare from this mic position is actually quite nice in the full mix.

Sweet! Is there a similar splitter tool you can use for other daws? I always seem to experience phase problems when using parallel buses..

Get something like Melda MAutoAlign or Waves InPhase when they're on sale. I always make sure my atuff is in phase, and I double triple quadruple check as I make changes.

Great insights Ryan - thanks for passing these along. You mentioned the Ward Beck VU model, however, what is the Dorrough model? I'm getting more analog in my studio and am in need of some good VU meters. Thanks again, I look forward to applying your teaching.

Good video.. Any reason why you use the splitter tool and don’t set up buses? I tried the splitter tool but it didn’t really work for me.

Good stuff but this video did not need to be 37 minutes long! And maybe I'm just dense but it felt disjointed and hard to follow despite the simple and effective concepts used. I did pick up some tips but a quick intro talking about what you're going to cover and a before/after clip would have been very helpful!
