Hopefully Valve makes a V2. My favorite aspect of the original SC is the big right trackpad that made it easy to play any game with mouse input.

Just wanted to chime in to say that this controller is a life-saver for people with disabilities. I have ulnar tunnel and can't use a mouse anymore, and the steam controller has single-handedly saved my steam library from being useless and allowed me to continue playing games with friends. It's a tragedy that they're so expensive now and that we never got a 2.0

The Steam controller is one of the very few controllers that can wake a computer(& Steam Deck) from sleep via dongle. Very nice feature.

There's not a single day that I regret buying a Steam Controller. I bought mine used 5 years ago but the original owner barely used it. Like how you said it, it remained in a good condition. I find it funny how my 8bitdo Pro 2 Controller already started drifting after 1 month upon purchase. I finished Doom and Doom Eternal on SC, had a lot of fun than a K&M.

I love my Steam controllers so much I bought four and still have two that have even been opened. My first two still work as they did out of the box.

I mainly use this controller when I'm sick, it's like the perfect remote too as you get a mouse, scroll wheel and keyboard in a controller package. I still think it's kinda underrated

I got my steam controller from a GameStop in 2015, last one there and first one I've ever seen. It's been going strong, it's gone through a thousand hours of breath of the wild with me. Absolutely my favorite controller

It has a bit of a learning curve, but its way of utilizing both trackpads to do split keyboard text input is one of the most innovative ways I've entered text via a controller.

What I liked about the Steam Controller is the Bluetooth (technically BLE) update that Valve did when the Steam Controller was already discontinued. It added Bluetooth support to the controller and allowed it to function without a dongle on Nvidia Shield, Multiple TVs, iPhones, Android etc. Combining this with the Steam Link app was great for playing games remotely or on a bigger screen. Even if the input lag of this BLE method wasn't great.

It is wild how people keep saying that Valve drops support for their hardware, both the Steam Link and Steam Controllers may no longer be manufactured but they're still being updated and supported for years even after they've flopped. They weren't perfect for sure, but goddamn it they are not abandoned. Edit: Changed Steam Machines to Steam Link Edit 2: Yeah Steam Machine OS got dropped but also not at the same time? I've heard anecdotally that some people managed to get a new update somehow?

I've been working as a developer for 8 years now and have worked on a couple of games featuring native Steam Controller support. I always thought the idea behind the Steam Input API was amazing. What killed it for me was just how incredibly buggy it was and how annoying it was to work with. Adding Steam Controller support to any game was always a nightmare, and the buggy API gave you very little control over anything and forced you to often recreate your entire controller mappings from scratch, because any configuration was always stored only on Steam servers, with no access to the developers except via the same mapping tool end users use. Having just a simple text file to edit for the mappings would have gone such a long way for us developers. Nevertheless, I still think the idea itself is great and I'm glad they tried to somewhat evolve it for the Steam Deck. It remains kind of a buggy mess and sometimes disables certain configuration options for no reason at all, but when it works, it's super useful and lets you play PC games in pretty convenient ways on your handheld. It was actually pretty nice to, let's say, just add gyro aiming to the first person views in Dark Souls.

It's such an interesting device. I'm so sad they don't make them any more. I have a second (new in box) that I can't decide if I should sell for an inflated price or save in case my normal one dies. It doesn't work great for every game but when you need it for a niche game, it's amazing.

Here´s hoping for a Steam Controller 2 based on the Steam Deck layout. Having both d pad, a second stick and also the trackpads hence combining the best of both a traditional controller and the OG Steam Controller.

the steam controller was discontinued due to being sued by scuf, they won but during.tge bumpy road, they had to discontinue the SC. I love my SC though, i would never have loved series like halo without it, hope the V2 will also be great

I have two of them, one still in the original packaging. One of the best functioning controllers I ever used, 2nd to the quest 2 controller.

Im glad this existed, it paved the way for the awesome control layout of the steamdeck, which is so good I wish I could use it as a regular controller on my main PC

Loved this. Never seen your channel before but as someone who adores the Steam Controller and wished it was more universal in support, I echo a lot of your views here. I wonder if they'd released their original concept, with just the two trackpads, weirdly shaped ABXY buttons, screen and thumbstick if we'd even be talking about it this far down the line, as it stands this thing is my favourite controller hands down.

If they make a 2.0, definitely it needs two sticks, but also I'd want a proper D-pad.

The triggers are also dual stage and they took that away in the Steam Deck, it would be nice to see the best of both on a Steam Controller 2. 2 Thumbsticks, 2 trackpads, 4 back buttons, and dual stage triggers.

Since I use my Steam Deck 50% of the time in docked desktop mode having a new version of their controller would be awesome.

I feel like some sort of built in library of user submitted game control presets could have made the process of setting up the steam controller easier. Similar to the use of the proton database for game compatibility on the steam deck and other linux systems. EDIT: Apparently this exists! Now I kind of want A steam controller.

Still have mine after five years to the point that the joystick is worn down but still works like an absolute charm. The most interesting controller I've ever used, hands down. This is the nerd controller that wants it their way, it never caught on because the average consumer doesn't like configuring settings right out of the box because that takes time. This time spent configuring is well worth it as it makes for a more well refined experience, especially with games that have limited options for controller inputs. Massively underrated controller.

I can't believe 7 years has passed already. How time flies. If i game on PC it's always just with an Elite Series 2 controller or just good old mouse and keyboard anyway. i tend to just stick to Series X so i can laze in the recliner with the cupholders though nowadays.

one of my friends gave me one of these a while back as a form of paying me back for something, and I haven’t wanted to use any other kind of controller since. while weird to get used to at first, it’s now easily the best controller i’ve ever used.

I bought mine just a few weeks after it launch. One of the best controller I ever had. Too late to buy when it was on sale for $5 though, should have bought 2 more. Sadly, the left back button of mine stop working, but since very few games really needs it, I'm still using it. Once you get used to the x/y/a/b button placement, it's gold from there and I got used to it after like a few days. Personally, the major downside of steam controller and steamInput as a whole is that fact that, for the first few years, you can't use it as a controller if it's not a steam game. Outside of steam, it would behave like a mouse and keyboard. The fact that I had to download a 3rd party app so it would behave and detect as a controller by non steam games is probably one of the reason it did not sell well. Not everyone will have the time and patience to google "how to setup steam controller for non steam game." Honestly with the steam deck and if they made a steam controller 2, it needs to work like a regular xbox controller for non steam games. What they can do is to make steaminput a separate or that as long as steam app is open, you don't need to add the non steam game to steam. If you can set it as a xbox/ps controller even for non steam games, it would truly be a universal pc controller.

I absolutely love the ability of changing every button for whatever you want, it makes you able to construct your own comfortable layout for any game, and that's great. But the reason why I've bought my Steam Controller - is a gyroscope. I was astonished by the idea that I can aim in games using movements of my hands in the air (even if they hold a controller) instead of just moving mouse on the desktop. Yes, it was a pain in the ass to setup gyroscope sensitivity like I want and adjust it right, but it was worth every single hour. It's not ideal type of aiming, but it gives so good feelings when you move your controller and see your weapon moving at the same time - like you are actually holding it -, that I really enjoy very much to play games with it instead of keyboard and mouse. And of course, it's also satisfying to move third person camera like that, still feels smooth and like a freaking magic.

Back when this came out I sold a bunch of CSGO skins I won from gambling in the eSports tournaments and bought one of these and the Steam deck. I haven't really used either and I am bloody hopeless with the controller, but I need to spend a while just using it to get the hang of it. I hear it's insanely powerful if you get good with it

I bought a steam controller probably about a year after it first came out, it was on sale at Gamestop for about $20-$30. It was cool, but I didn't have much use for it, so I returned it after a few days. A few years later, presumably at the time they discontinued them, they were on sale for like $2.99 so of course I bought one. The Steam Link in home streaming box that had an MSRP for $100 was also on sale for a similar price so picked up one of those two. They are both pretty neat, but they've just been sitting in my closet for most of the time since I've bought them. I think the biggest issue with them is, as you said, the amount of configuration you need to do to get them working properly. I just don't have time for that now, hell I didn't even have time for that when I was a student and didn't even have a full time job like I do now.

As a console gamer who recently switched to PC gaming. I can confirm.. an analog stick for movement and a mouse pad for aim/camera is the best universal gaming setup. Despite how I never would have given this design a second thought a year and a half ago. I've pretty much been using half an Xbox controller and a mouse to play open world games like GTA that require driving and shooting. Keyboard and mouse for fps, and controller for action adventure titles.

What's that Might and Magic looking game you're playing? And what about that fps with a giant Commodore 64 in the background? Looks interesting.

Regarding the little rant about the gyro and how i utilized it : I mostly play shooters, as in FPS, so naturally i wanted the gyro only to spring into action when it's actually needed and that to me meant to have it be used in a scenario where my "natural motion" would support it. What i mean by natural is when you lean in while playing racing games, or turning your upper body while your ingame character wants to look over something and you end up looking over your screen, natural things people do like that. Take a game like Payday 2 where next to every available gun has ADS mechanics, i mapped it the way the gyro only activated when i used the mapped button for ADS, so i could mostly spray around like a madman with the haptical pad, but when i actually wanted to aim, not only did this particular game allow for different sensitivies while aiming, i also had it set up so that i can use my thumb on the haptics to approximate whatever i wanted then i could use the gyro to finetune my aiming, actually emulating what a mouse offers when it comes to the accuracy of aiming and so far accuracy was important in that example game, at least that's what i think. Anyway, cool video, i still love my steam controller, i got mine for a birthday when it came out and it also still is in pristine condition and nothings broken or worn off in a way that it hinders any function.

Do you know how to manage vibration and hepatic settings? It seems like steam removed that configuration from the Steam client, at least its not longer like it was

I was an early adopter of the Steam Controller, and I agree the missing right thumbstick was probably the biggest issue for the average gamer. If it could have been used as a "basic" controller, with the added functionality of the touchpads, I believe I would still be using it. The missing thumbstick took away more than the touch pads added.

I absolutely love the Steam Controller. I have 3, my first one's right bumper broke the same year the Controller was discontinued. I bought 2 more cheap, they're both still working beautifully. Would love for Steam to at the least bring back support for this unique piece of gaming hardware. *Edit:* Also got my brother's SC where his left bumper broke. Now I'm just going to swap parts and his Controller will be back up. Thinking of buying 2 3D printed bumpers for my first Controller and see how that works out.

You don’t have to tweak settings though, anyone can upload settings and the community has provided, especially for any popular or FPS game. And you can access this very easily.

now that they made the steam deck i really wish they would try to give the steam controller another shot, by incorporating all the features that are on the steam deck and putting them on a controller, including both sticks, dpad, face buttons and track pads, with additional buttons at the back, and maybe implement their own adaptive triggers, which may not be usefull now, but if we give incentive to developers to use we might get games to implement them.

God I would be over the moon if we got a steam controller v2 that had a control layout like the steam deck with duel stick a dpad and the duel touch pads. It would solve my biggest problem with the steam controller. The lack of a 2nd thumb stick bugged me at times as the touch pad wasn’t a perfect stand in but the touchpad was also quite nice for some things. Also the steam controller still has my favorite shell shape out of any controller I’ve used. Nice and large grips that just fall into your hands. I could use my steam controller way longer then I can use my switch pro controller before getting discomfort in my hands

The SC is so friggin ergonomic and feels so good once you have your mappings dialed in. Other than the great suggestion here of more grip buttons, the only way I could imagine substantially improving it would be to split the controller a la Joy-Cons or split keyboards. Squishing both of your arms close together to hold a little controller just isn't comfortable and should have been outmoded years ago. Some sort of divine marriage between Nintendo Joy-Cons and the SC would birth my perfect game controller

I don't think the steam controller could totally replace a normal controller for me but I can see some games benefiting from it more than others

They should make a new version of the Steam Machine that's just a souped-up version of the Deck without a screen, designed to plug into a TV. It could come with a V2 of the controller that's basically just the two halves of the Deck's stuck together

I love the Steam controller so much. I find it so easy to use and it has opened up a whole new world of gaming for me. I actually was so worried about mine breaking i bought 2 new ones as spares. Still using my original one.

I originally bought a Steam Link and Controller from GameStop in 2016, wound up selling both in 2018 after not using it as much as I intended, to buying another Steam Controller just now. I managed to find one in great condition with a dongle for $40, which currently is a steal for it from what I see. I used to play ESO with it a LOT in 2016 but when I started playing competitive titles (especially Rocket League) I ended up not using it for long periods of time until I got rid of it. I'm just getting back into ESO again so I'm looking forward to pouring more hours into the game with this!

Xbox One's wireless adapter driver (from Microsoft) does not require W10. I've only used it on W7. I will say that syncing to the controller is a huge pain, but doesn't require any software changes.

I just picked up 2 for 100 bucks. One is missing the dongle and back panel but the other works amazingly. I am really glad to have one of these things!

also 3:27 that's the first gen adapter, the gen 2 MS Xbox One USB Adapter is about as small as the steam one, i have an official one, and its about 2 CM from the port out.

I was late to the Steam Controller party, only just bought 2 off ebay last year. While I wasn't completely sold at first, they've grown on me to the point that I've stopped using other controllers. To me the lack of a second thumbstick actually has never been an issue, I even find the trackpad superior most of the time. What I don't like is the trackpad used as a DPad, that part actually sucks and I'm glad the Deck has a proper DPad.

Can I use this to play boxing games like undisputed and fight night which rely primarily on the right stick to throw punches?

Love the controller and just started using one again regularly for star citizen! While at work I can flip through the fps, flight, and ground vehicles But at home I leave it on fps to sit back with the dual vkbs

As someone who has used the steam controller since launch and does extensive configuration work... I honestly do not like the new ui. It is way more tedious to work with, taking anywhere from 2 to 5 additional button clicks to do anything. Seriously... go back to old big picture mode and add a long press activator to a button. Then try to add a long press command in the new ui. Then try to remove both of them. Compare the experience of those things. The new ui SUCKS for detailed configuration work. And I also really dont steam controller v2 to just be the Decks controls. Having used both, I cannot use the trackpads on the Deck the same way I can on the Steam Controller; the Decks pads are too small, the wrong shape, and positioned in a poor ergonomic location. The Steam Controller found an audience, however small that audience is. I really do not see why a Steam Controller v2 should try to alienate that audience to appeal to a more traditional/casual audience. Make both a proper Steam Controller v2 AND a "Deck Controller" imo.

Game changer for the industry. Not only was the controller itself brilliant...but ut also paved the way for steam's universal controller mapping api...no more need for 3rd party mappers. i paid $50 at launch and when Valve blew them out for $15 shipped...I picked up another...still new sealed in it's box because the 1st one is practically indestructible.

Still will never forgive Valve for letting me buy it when they were doing the $5 clearance deal and then emailing me saying that they accidentally sold to many and could not sell me one

I got one back in 2017, and absolutely loved it. I always preferred playing games with a controller (but I'm exclusively a PC player), and Steam Controller allows you to play not just shooters with the precision of a mouse, but even games like Factorio, and comfortably at that. It's a shame how it all ended, and made me hate Scuff even more. As far as I understand, they were actually planning to develop Steam Controller 2 until the lawsuit, judging by the patents Valve has made and stuff like that.
