When emulating BOTW on Cemu use the 60fps patch, the game is locked to 20-30fps normally and it works more like turning off V-Sync then forcing 60fps. improves performance a lot on low end systems (example my friends 5 year old gaming laptop) Edit: you can also Tweak shadow and texture quality. all of this is under graphics packs :)

I got a question. If the steam deck has the powerful hardware to run demanding new games like cyber punk, red dead redemption 2, death stranding, Etc. How can it not run older emulated switch, Wii U, and ps3 games like those shown in this video? Is the reason it cannot run some of those emulated games have to do with a software problem? The hardware on the steam deck seems like it could handle those older emulated games.
@CoilWhine
@CoilWhine 2 жыл бұрын
Emulation is a difficult task to accomplish. Lets talk about a couple of them for example. PS2: MIPS gc/wii/wii-u: PowerPC ps3: Power PC but complicated For reference your computer (unless it's a new mac with the m1 chip) is using an x86 cpu. So to emulate an older console you have to translate between the two architectures. It gets even more complicated when you start looking at the way some games are coded. Many titles look better on a console than they have any right to when you compare them to a PC release. Take for example the PS3. It's rocking 256mb of ram and a dang 256mb gtx 7800gtx - level GPU. How does that even run skyrim? Skyrim says it needs 2gb of ram as the minimum (i'm sure you can get away with lower)! That's where the difficulty comes into play. You have to translate between cpu architectures and you have to find a way to make your PC hardware run with all of the weird quirks and optimizations that the console versions used. Typically you do end up needing a system with _massively_ increased specs over the original hardware. The ps4/xbone being x86 will help with emulation (there's a VERY early emulator for PS4 floating around) but even then those systems have games heavily optimized for them. I'm not _super_ well versed on it, so I'm sure I'm overly simplifying things here
@UNSCPILOT
@UNSCPILOT 2 жыл бұрын
Emulation isn't an efficient process, your Steamdeck has to waste a lot of processing power to pretend to be whatever console it's emulating, more powerful systems demand a lot more preformance than the original hardware ever had. If you have the same game as a PC Steam game it will run far better than its emulated brother (unless the port is truely aweful)

A little unrelated: As a Linux user, running games through Proton and WINE on the regular, I do often experience optimization issues, especially with CPU utilization. The game will slow down, GPU utilization drops, but CPU utilization stays at the 30 to 60% region. Usually evenly spread across all cores. It is usually not a big deal, as I run a 144Hz monitor, and the issue rarely pushes frame rates under 60. But it is still odd. Implementing stuff like patching the kernel to have f-sync capability helps, but the issue is still present. I’ve been away from windows for too long to know if that sort of optimization issue exists there as well. But when talking emulators and translation layers, it is certain they are contributing factor.

Original Xbox and 360 were based on a PowerPC CPU architecture I believe. That’s why making an emulator is not easier than doing that for a Nintendo or PlayStation console, all based on RISC architectures.
@CoilWhine
@CoilWhine 2 жыл бұрын
Original Xbox was actually a Pentium...3 with a GeForce GPU! It was really a "DirectX-box" if anything since it was basically a full on PC. I heard in the comments here that there is some emulation moving forward for the system, but most of it's games existed on the other consoles of it's time so interest is minimal. The xbox 360 was a 3-core PowerPC CPU, and the PS3 was a wild "cell" power-pc system with something like 7 cores, with one going to the operating system. It's why I'm amazed by how decently the PS3 emulator runs, it's one complicated system The Ps2 was...MIPS i think, switch is ARM, PS1 was also MIPS (just googled it), which are all RISC like you said. The xbone, Xbox series X/S, ps4, ps5 are all AMD systems running x86-64, so hopefully we can get some easier emulation with those consoles down the road. Alternatively we just get PC ports of their games instead (like the God of War PC release).

The burden is mostly on the cpu thats trying to emulate everything from a different architecture. If you want some context go check out the dev updates that the dolphin team puts out. I'll have to give it a shot again on my poco f3 (snapdragon 870). I don't consider it playable unless it runs melee at 60fps lol. I guess the last time I really tried it was back when the 845/855 was out. Still, the pi 4 is a league or two below an 870 or above in horsepower. I still need to get one to play with though

Strange stuff, it might just be vulkan having a rough time on windows. AMD cards make that frustrating, since switching to GL means you lose half your performance

CPU is zen 2 just as we used ;) We did compare RDNA 1 vs 2 in terms of IPC. Most of the improvements in RDNA2 are perf/watt, raytracing, and higher frequency/bigger dies. The biggest factor will be mem bandwidth and power limits. So we'll see

@@CoilWhine It is the first video that i see of your channel, I just hope that my critics will end up with a "learning" and not with a ban. You said ryzen 3100 which is zen 1. In a CPU, the cache is probably the most important thing and the bottleneck that drives performance. And not only the 3100 has less cache that (as an example) the 5600G but it has on different levels. This should also be compared with the fact Moreover, TFlops means nothing and you are comparing a (if I heard correctly) 5500xt. It is my GPU currently, but it is again uncomparable as it has another architecture... to be sure to hear correctly, i also enabled subtitles. Another thing is linux vs windows, expecially on emulator every cut of processes is needed.

No worries, I'm not going to ban someone for having a discussion. I've been schooled a few times in the comments and I appreciate it. So the ryzen 3100 _is_ zen 2. www.amd.com/en/products/cpu/amd-ryzen-3-3100 it's 7nm and it supports pcie 4.0. You may be thinking of the 1300? Yeah, the cache for the 3100 is a bit on the low side, though a single CCX design like the 3300x can only have 16mb of l3 assuming it isn't a radical change in design. A dual CCX design like the 3100 can probably have 32mb of L3 though you incur latency penalties (which are also massive in gaming) by going that route. So, I'd assume a 16mb of L3 is most likely, which for gaming on an APU is probably more than enough. You'll be GPU bottlenecked in most cases excluding our emulation test here. As for the GPU, tflops are only a single measure and are typically useless when going between architectures. I wouldn't compare tflops between a radeon 7, a 5700xt, and a 1080ti for example. Though within a generation it can be a bit more useful. Comparing the 5700xt to a 5500xt in tflops can give you a _ballpark_ but obviously it doesn't account for things such as the memory bandwidth. www.extremetech.com/gaming/321068-amd-radeon-6700-xt-vs-5700-xt-rdna2-comparison for example shows that on a clock for clock basis RDNA 1 and 2 are very close. If the IPC didn't change much, and the architecture is mostly the same then they can be kinda close. Obviously this isn't perfect. Memory bandwidth is obviously an issue. Clockspeed also matters, since we're running the simulated GPU at only ~600mhz. GPUs are very good at multithreading, but it could still make a difference. Anyways, it's the best that we have and for emulation at least it's probably spot on if the steamdeck isn't throttling too much (due to the CPU dependence in most emulation workloads).

@@CoilWhine Sorry.. sometimes at 30 years old i miss some data :D What I mean is Zen3 compared to Zen2 CPUs. Ryzen 5*** are Zen3 while the 3100 is Zen2, I was thinking that the steam deck CPU is Zen3.. I'm sure of nothing by this side anymore, i don't want to believe that they confused GPU architecture with CPU architecture. So it's true, steam deck CPU is "old gen". Now that I understood that did a terrible choice of CPU architecture (imho), i just hope that when they designed the cache of the processor they were "generous". In a classic CPU+discrete GPU scenario, cache is important while in an APU the cache is VITAL, and not only L3 (16MB) but also the second and first layer (L2 L1). This is because now VRAM is the RAM and the "GPU" needs to share infos very fast with the CPU and this happens through cache. Discrete GPU+CPU scenario is not a good indicator of how much important the cache is on an APU. To make it clear and visible: Ryzen 3100 L3=16MB L2=2MB L1=256KB Ryzen 3200g L3=4MB L2=2MB L1=384KB Ryzen 5600g L3=16MB L2=3MB L1=not written in amd website (or cannot find). Now, if on the 3100 you cannot test the graphical power, the difference between 5600g and 3200g is huge also thanks to cache. www.techspot.com/article/2308-cpu-cores-and-cache/ On the GPU side, it will be very difficult for me to explain my point, i should try some research. In fact, i checked on google scholar but there are not so many researches outing as "rdna 2" gets me to nuclear power :D I try to be suspicious when I have a single source, but that is difficult to prove my point. An example of possible results would be to take an AMD rdna2 cards, downclock to the clock of the steam deck and do a proportion of compute units to compute units. This will be much better than TFlops between generations, as in a GPU.. we do have cache xD And still, the 5500XT has no informations as newer cards have "infinity cache" (still not talking about the layers.. :( )
@CoilWhine

Yeah, I feel ya, I'm almost 30 myself lol. So the ryzen APU situation is CRAZY confusing. The 3200/3400g are actually zen+ not zen2. The 4000 series of APUs (renoir) are zen2 but they were OEM only. They have 8mb of L3 which is annoying since a fully loaded zen2 ccd (two 4-core ccx's) is capable of having _32_mb of cache, but the 8 core 4700g only has 8... That's unfortunate news and I'm glad you made me look into that, it's something I completely missed since again, the dang zen2 APUs were OEM only and not really talked about... I get what you're saying about the GPU, we just don't know the clockspeed yet unfortunately. They only dropped the tflop number so that's all we could work with. Trust me, I would love to have more than one parameter to try and dial in our "simulator". As far as the "infinity cache" that's always a tad bit confusing. As far as I can tell it's mostly used to help mitigate the cut down memory bus that the 6000 series cards have (which is why the'yre medicore at mining compared to a 5700xt). It could definitely be a game changer on the APU side but there's no info on an RDNA APU just yet. That actually could make a _huge_ difference now that you mention it. We're definitely going to do a head-to-head once we get our steamdeck. This is why I appreciate the comments though, I always end up picking up some more information that I wasn't away of.

Even though you may only be playing older titles, the companies that made them (and especially nintendo) view the downloading of ROMs as piracy. I cannot tell you how to acquire roms of the internet, and legitimately ripping your own "backups" can be quite tedious and/or require specific hardware (such as my unpatched switch). I'd love to go into detail about emulation and how to setup the software, it'd give me a good reason to research it for myself. The issue is that youtube would not look favorably upon that and we'd probably get that video taken down. There are plenty of guides out there though, and I wish you the best of luck with your deck, we'll definitely do some more extensive testing on emulation with the device when we get ours

BotW was a real head scratcher for me, I tried with several settings and with CEMU and Yuzu and still had a rough time. The settings were all using vulkan if available since AMD + Windows + GL = 0 fps. If you have some games to suggest I might follow up on the video, it's just hard to _acquire_ these titles, and testing takes a good chunk of time.

I don't know how deck operates, so can't say about detailed settings, but try getting a cache for botw for better (no jittery) fps (even though it seemed fine?), Not sure if they still use hook on cemu...with it games run much faster.
