Steam Deck: Fix Stutter+Crashes In Large Open World Games With a Bigger Swap File

Large open world games like PalWorld, Witcher, RDR and others may suffer from high memory allocation and leaks - meaning that eventually (after about 45 minutes to an hour) the game begins to stutter - and you know a crash is about to happen.
While the swap file won't fix EVERYTHING, it can really help with certain games - and you probably came to this video because someone recommended it for a particular game.
In this video, we TEACH as well as DO, so the first half will help explain what is going on - the second half is the actual tutorial.

I think this will come in handy with The First Descendant. I restored my SD to factory and before that it was running at 38 FPS and after that it was only 30 FPS. I noticed the swap file was disabled so i enabled it. I haven't tried it yet to see if there's any improvement.

@@Darkuni Hi, I've made every step on the video and whenever i restart the Steam Deck the swap file gets disabled. So it turns out that is caused by STEAMOS 3.7. I downgraded to STEAMOS 3.5.9 and recovered the 38 FPS, Also the Swap File is working now with the size i choosed 2gb. (sorry for my english)

I’ve put in maybe 50 hours on the deck playing FD ran like a champ. This past Saturday I played my longest session for about 6 hours straight. A day later the game won’t run at all I’m instant crashing. Do you think these steps will help or I have a bigger problem? Also my fan is always on and loud now. Since that session.

@@luckluciano3303 Pretty weird as everyone on steam forum have this problem with the deck. The most stable way for me to play TFD is limiting the cpu to 2.9 Ghz and the GPU to 1.5 Ghz at 20W and using Intel XESS at Quality option. But still getting kicked to menu.

When I type in ‘sudo mkswap swap file’ this come up, mkswap: swap file: insecure permissions 0644, fix with: chmod 0600

Is 4 gigs enough? 😮 I don't mind sacrifice 16 gigs for it.

It is worth looking this up. In my research, there were VERY clear guidelines regarding swap file sizes vs RAM. In the video, I gave the established guidelines. I'm not sure why they "cap" it at 4GB - but I'm sure there was a reason.

@@Darkuni I know it tend to be a delicate balance, due to Ram being faster and Pagination files being somewhat on the slower side. So having more usually could result in slowdowns on games, but it's true, I still prefer a slowdown on a game than having it crashing... 🤔 But OK I will trust your word and keep it at 4g than. If you ever find anything regarding this just release a new video, I have subscribed so I will hopefully see it soon or l8r. And Thank you for this, hugs.
