Traveling with the steam deck
1) The case is awesome. It’s fantastic and made for travel. It has the lockable clasp for a keeping the zipper closed. This will ensure the steam deck is really hard to get out of the case. The case has this weird outer flap that keeps the charger or any accessories in it but it’s just a flap of elastic. So it’s not super secure for anything other than big things like the charger. I honestly didn’t use that cubby on the case at all.
2) I limited the TPD to 10 watts and used 40hz mode (see previous video for details) and half 65% battery after playing in the airport and then on the plane for over an hour. Elden ring and then Call of Cathulu. The battery life is low on AAA games but the lighter older title played flawlessly and drained hardly any batter.
3) The steam deck is a large but not too large to play however, when you are on those tiny seats the issue I didn’t realize, was that the arm rests on a plane are so low that you cant comfortably rest your elbows on them. This led to a one of 2 problems, either I could have my arms hovering in the air making me uncomfortable from the weight or the deck being so low that my neck got fatigued from tilting my head down so much to see it. Neither was a major problem on a short 2.5 hour flight, but may really bother some people on longer flights.
4) The deck performed incredible and to be playing AAA games on an airplane on a massive 7” screen was amazing. I cant recommend this enough for flying. Elden Ring on a plane!!!????? So badass. Planes have chargers now and honestly you could play this thing infinitely on a plane now. I have plaid this in a hotel, plane and car. It’s the perfect companion for the road.
5) My only complaint is that the case, while incredible, I wish was smaller/thinner for my backpack. Other than that its amazing, AND FREE. Haha.

Deck is heavy, but I can't find anything else to hate. Originally, I wanted it for its emulation potential, and it's not only lived up to my needs and expectations, it's blown it out of the park, and the fact that I can play my Steam library on the go, especially when waiting in the long line to pick my kid up from school every day, it's been an absolute blast. My wife thinks it's super cool, too.

That’s rad. I feel the same. I haven’t even emulated anything yet. Lol. Still so blown away by it stock running steam games. My wife loves that now I’m playing on the couch next to her while she watches her shows and instead of in the studio. It’s heavy but not too heavy and as long as your not on a plane with no space it’s pretty awesome. Lol. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Literally within less than 24 hours after my steam deck arrived I went on a flight from DC to Denver to spend time with my ex. It was so fun and great to toy with while traveling! And last year I ended up going on tour and brought it with me and it was cool! (Actually got more use out of my switch while on tour bc I did multiplayer games with the ppl I toured with) Overall, steam deck is great for travel, not surprising to me seeing it's made for games on the go Also I found a nice low key case I ended up using pretty soon after I got it, it has a magnetic cover to protect the front of it. I forget what it's called sadly

Great video! Going on 6 flights over the next few weeks, two will be over 8 hours. Love the Steam Deck, got around 15 games that I tested will work offline for the flight. Only problem I have is the battery, for some reason it doesn't last as long as other people mention and I only get around an hour and half until its done while on a fairly resourceful game. I'm bringing an extra power bank and should get 2-3 extra full charges so hoping it works out fine🤞

Love the review. I'm waiting for mine. It should be here any day now. I do travel 7-10 times per year, so this is one of the reason I'm getting it. Can you explain about changing the wattage to save power? Not familiar with that.
@notquitenerdy
@notquitenerdy Жыл бұрын
The wattage is in the quick settings. You can limit the amount of watts or power that the computer chip can use. When you do that the battery lasts longer. Limiting the frame rate and screen refresh rate limits the amount of work (therefore) electricity the steam deck needs to perform. And boom longer battery life.

I looked up how it was flying with the Steam Deck since I'll be taking my first flight in a little over a week from Florida to Nebraska and wanted to make sure there weren't going to be any problems regarding possible unforeseen circumstances and it appears that I don't really have anything to worry about! While I do have access to a few more recent and demanding titles (Ghostwire: Tokyo, Steelrising, and One Piece Odyssey to name a few) I'm currently working through a few older titles like Final Fantasy IX, Skies of Arcadia, and Elemental Gimmick Gear. The flight alone is going to be a minimum of seven and a half hours, but I was recently playing the aforementioned Skies of Arcadia without it hooked up to the Steam Dock and I only lost about 20 to 30% of the battery from a full charge after a 5 or so hours, so I should be golden on that front in case I accidentally forget my charger, somehow. That said, thanks for the info~

A few points on the case: 1. It's not free if it came with something you paid for, this applies to anything. 2. It's not tamper proof, it's lazy proof someone with a ballpoint pen could just undo the zipper on it Other than that the steam deck is amazing and exactly what I've been wanting over the years. Hey thanks for the compliment and watching the video!! Yes you can run a VPN but there may be a little effort because of the version of Linux it runs. Google it and find the Reddit. The Custom SOC/APU can definitely run a 4k monitor in desktop mode. You just cant game any higher than 800P on heavy games still though. Now easy to run games you may be able to run them at 1080. I have seen someone mention it but haven't tested. I will though and make a video talking about the experience.

I fricken love my SD. The strap on the back is better if you put the charger in it's bag then behind the strap. My only complaint is more storage, more, more, more. I think the SD's size/weight is just fine although I agree with holding it up to yer face for long periods isn't comfortable. Made in 73 I have seen it all from PONG to this, and what a wild ride it's been. I'm still in awe booting up Elden Ring or FC5, ATS, The Hunter COTW or anything else anywhere I want. Seriously spoiled for choice now with new titles and a back log of classics it's always easy to find a little time on the Deck but not my rig. It has changed gaming for me big time. My rig is now just a Flight Sim rig at this point.

I REALLY went all in on trying to get this thing ready for a 5 hour flight coming up. Not only do I have tons of games installed, but using a DeckMate I have made a battery mounting system, that is able to mount a 20,000mah battery to the back. This should help keep the deck alive all throughout the flight, but just in case, I am bringing a second battery. So long as I can rest it on the tray table I think this is going to be a fun trip. PS the reason I am trying so hard to keep the deck alive for the Whole flight is... well I hate flying, and the less I can be focused on the fact we are in a pressurized tube 40 something thousand feet in the air, the better I will feel.

You cannot. PS5 games would be streaming from your PS5 though the internet to your deck. That’s not gonna workout on a plane and cannot work offline. Now if you buy PS games on steam then you could play those. Offline games work from steam. No need to install windows. The problem is the games themselves. Some games have a launcher and need constant internet to play them. Those games won’t work. Of the game has an offline mode inside the settings it would be a game you can play.

So 15w is the standard maximum the steam deck runs at. So don’t ever use the TDP setting unless you go down lower. I recommend if you use older or lightweight titles and you want to save battery go down to 10watts and limit the FPS to 30. Otherwise if you want to run 15 watts or full power switch the TDP button off.

From personal experience, it's huge, heavy and kind of a waste without a battery bank with fast Charge capability. And even still, I wanna take it...portable Uncharted 4? R u serious?

@@notquitenerdy I bought mine with the strict idea of it being my Not-Switch and a portable PS4. Turns out it's a portable PS5 and XBSX. Dream come true for an on the go portable nerd like me.

even without a batt bank you can squeeze 4-5 hours out of old games like dead space1

@@user-yk1cw8im4h I've hit 6.5 on some Pixel-art games like Vampire Survivors and Dead Cells. But you have to set it into Offline Mode and disable the wifi. It's a fabulous machine, but it does have some quirks and frequently forgets it is supposed to be portable. The offline mode in particular needs some work imho.
