Live Steam Engine and Boiler with Alternator Off Grid
I bought this steam engine and installed a 85 amp. alternator.
I am selling it with one of my 20" boilers.

I bought this steam engine and installed a 85 amp. alternator. It comes with a Antique Swift oiler. The bore is 3 inch on the high pressure end and 5 inch on the low end piston with a 4 inch stroke. I estimate this engine will produce 5 hp depending on the boiler pressure. The height of just the engine is 28 inches and the length is 32. The flywheel is 12 1/2" dia. It weighs 150 lbs. It runs at 325 rpm wide open.
This is with a fire-tube boiler. It also includes a brand new style of firebox with the ash pan built into it. It is brand new and weighs around 600 lbs. It measures 80" high to the top of the stack x 24" square at the base. The boiler itself is 20" dia. x 30" tall, made of 3/8" steel. The pop-off valve is set at 100 lbs. The boiler has twenty-two 1-1/2" dia. copper tubes rolled in that are 28" long. The firebox is 22" x 22" x 15" tall with plenty of room for large pieces of wood or lots of coal. The ash pan is built into the base. A feature on this boiler is the the blower ring. With the addition of this item, the draft is increased by ten times. The amount of air moving through the fire is amazing. It also includes a large hand pump with a 1 inch ram. This boiler will supply enough steam for a 5-6 Hp. engine.
The lifting table is not included.

The 85 amp alternator could power a 1kw inverter. And that engine with that boiler could probably power a significantly more powerful alternator under load. Add an inverter and you've got yourself a lovely little off-grid AC power setup right there.

why the modern flex coupling betw the two engines? Why not a one piece crank like in marine practice? did you make these engines or were they bought?

Hello, I know you sold this set up, But I have a question. How "Long" would this set up "Last" ?? Meaning, If I ran it ALL DAY EVERY DAY 24 HOURS A DAY, How long would this Set up " Last" before becoming "Worn Out" ???? Kinda like a gas motor is worn out at around 250/300,000 miles ??. Also, How long would the set up "Operate" before it needed "Tending Too"??? Like adding firewood and or water ??. I'm seriously considering buying a steamer set up to keep my Batteries all charged(by alternator like yours) But haven't found anyone (old enough to know details) that knows how "Long" this set up would "Last" !!??????. Please help, And I'd love to "Pick your brain" for all the Info I could get/learn !!!!!!??. Thx. Dan.

Probably not all that long honestly. The build quality just isn't there. We could go into details of the bearings and the crankshaft I've seen from these units and it's plainly obvious to see its poorly manufactured and engineered. I wouldn't put a video out showing missing lock washers on bolts etc. As for tending, it needs CONSTANT supervision. Steam power engines can NEVER be left alone, they're not safe when not monitored because the pressure is dependent upon fuel that isn't measured like an injector measures gasoline etc. Sure you can put pressure relief valves and such but everything can stick/fail/etc. turning these into time bombs. Now as for the question of how often you have to feed it fuel etc, depends on your source, coal for example is fairly consistent but again it's constant feeding to keep it running peak. If you feed too much, you waste fuel because it ends up going out the pressure relief valves, too little and the motor doesn't run full speed. Thus if you want to feed it less often, you end up wasting more fuel. Plan on every 15 minutes feeding some fuel to it at very least. Sorry I can't answer your question better but you can imagine how many variables exist in your question. This engine would be great in a pinch, as a handy mechanic, one could keep it going for thousands of hours potentially but I'd expect to have to MAKE and design parts for it as they wore out. I'm tempted to invest in one for a SHTF engine but sadly, there seems to be next to none in regards to quality steam engines produced today.

The guys how operated steam locomotives and steam vessels where usually tradesman working with engines and/or metals, because of the high maintance. So to run it ecconomical, those guys knew how to make new bearings and parts, that is from casting, machining and fitting just about everthing. a bearing in a steam engine of that size, given it's well maintained and services regularly.... depending on material and all other factors can live up to 500-2000 machine hours i would say. The endurance of a plant is also not easily answered, as there are different types of boilers. Just think of the steam liners, they had huge boilers and a constand crew to maintain them. But i would not consider this for a permanent power source on which you want to depend. And it will be hard to operate it while you are working on something else. On my steamboat, i have to constantly check everything, as it's a very fragile balance, but 10-15min without interaction is feasable, if all conditions work hand in hand. But as pointed out by thereasoanbleamericans: constant supervision. That's why in marine applications the diesel tuck over so fast. And also in powerplants on farms, small workshops and such. Just because, it's so much easier to operate. BTW: the old diesels work on waste oil.... i guess bio fuel is the better direction to go on. And have a engine that is easier serviceable. They used wood and even swine poop to make petrol engines work back in the days....

If I knew about the Marine Industry Tec. ,I would still be an Alaska homesteader and if I knew steam engines, I would still be sailing the Caribbean. First off that alternator is crap. You try to charge house battery's with that, you'll tear the guts out. That engine is big enough to drive the house and he's made jumper cables. Use marine alt designed for deep cycle battery..that motor has to be tinkered with every day(per-start).
