On tuesday 30th April we saw the 'Great Britain XII' charter train day 4 of 9, from Preston to Edinburgh via Shap and Beattock stop at Carlisle for an hour. It was hauled by a double head of LNER A4 no 60009 'Union of South Africa' and Black Five no 44871.
later that day this years first 'Dalesman' trip from York to Carlisle via the Settle line arrived (an hour late) hauled by LMS Princess Royal Class no 6201 'Princess Elizabeth'.

When I had the pleasure of a trip on the Dalesman, it was being pulled by Galatea. I definitely recommend it for those who haven't been yet, it's a lovely trip.

Hi Julian, I really enjoyed your video thanks for posting! I like the fact that a lot of your engines have names of one sort or another, seems proper to me somehow.

Thanks - glad you liked the video. Like ships, we have named many of our locomotives since the days of Stephenson's Rocket. It continues to this day, and only recently I was in York for the naming of an electric loco after Sir William McAlpine (see the video 11 Jan 2019).

Thankyou. Both these train trips were over lines with a steep climb. On the 2nd train see here the trip from Settle to Carlisle was 115 km, and climbing about 200 metres. There were water stops at the beginning middle and end - ie about 65 km apart. Not sure how often the coal was refilled, but not half way.
