A friend had a Royal Cape One yacht, used to often go sailing, such great memories, now 83. Thank you.

Noted John Woodend at the end and the barbecue. My Father, John Drummond, was the Master of the Danie Hugo tug and John Woodend took over from him in July 1971 as the tugmaster.

In fact, John Woodend spoke at my Father's memorial service in July 2011.

Indeed. I left Capetown aged 13, but memories of days at work with dad are good ones!

Great footage of Capetown and the harbour. Union Castle and P&O liners berthed at 1.15 and looks like a Glen Line cargo ship at 5.54. Went there many times when in Merchant navy. Great place then.

Wow, awesome QE2 footage there. She definitely looked better with the Red/striped funnel.

Wonderful footage and golden memories there. I can't help wondering if, together, Smoky Sue and McEwen might be responsible for all this hot and unpredictable weather we are having.

ST McEwen was Smoky Sue

Matter of opinion I guess. Personaly, I like the original slim funnel and colour scheme, the red seems more appropriate for the older shaped funnels.

Hi there, this footage is great! I've been restoring a pipe organ with a man who came to the UK from Cape Town by ship in 1960. I'm putting together a film about him and would love to use a couple of clips. Would that be possible?

@@struck2soon That's amazing! Thankyou! It will be a documentary and I'm hoping to get it into film festivals later this year. I might need to get written permission stating that it's ok to use the clip for them to accept the film. Would that be possible? I'm not quite sure how to give you my contact details. Do you know if it's possible to direct message or private message through youtube? Best wishes, Manus

Do we know the name of the tug at 3:50? Unless there were more than one of that type in Table Bay, then I think she was first to greet me when I came to RSA aboard the Windsor Castle in 1975. I have a great colour photo of the tug against the Tafelberg backdrop, taken from the Union Castle liner as I arrived. I came on a three year contract but stayed 20 years. Achingly nostalgic - Shaun Russell.

Unfortunately Shaun I can't name her, I know there were several small tugs that were used for pilot boarding and small work in the port. All this was shot by my late father, he also briefly worked for Union Castle before Safmarine. He was tempted ashore to work on those old steamers.

As I recall from working on those tugs in the 60 s, there were 7 tugs including 3 small pilot tugs, all triple expansion steam engines. The 4 larger tugs had twin engines direct coupled to prop shafts with a Stevenson reversing gear, witnessed them go from full ahead to full astern without closing throttle much to the consternation of the Chief Engineer.
