Short video of steamboat 'Persistance' steaming to Rio Vista, California. Sorry for the wind noise! My Google Pixel 6 does not have an easy way to attenuate the racket from the wind.

Thanks for taking us along. I need to get up to Rio Vista next time I take a trip up river. Went to Petaluma a couple of weeks ago. Just need to organize the crew. Wish I had a whistle like the one on Persistence.

You're very welcome! Thank you! It was a good cruise. Weather was perfect. What are you sailing in? Been steamboating?

@@WesleyHarcourtSTEAMandMORE I have an Ericson 34' sloop with a diesel auxiliary. I've worked on steam ships, Ferryboat Eureka, and Jeri. But most of my time has been in sail, all the major sailing vessels at Hyde St. including a few years crew on Alma, the Hay Scow. Now I mostly sail my own boat as the museum has "issues". So I have not been on a hot steaming boat except at the dock. I'd love to. Steam is fascinating.

@@WesleyHarcourtSTEAMandMORE What I noticed on other uploads is that on low rev-speed it seems as if the engine isn"t turning "round"... difficult to explain what I'm hearing and seeing. If it would be a gas-engine, I'd say that one cylinder has a "timing-problem". But this could be the design of this engine. That impression disapears once you're pushing the speed up.

@@WesleyHarcourtSTEAMandMORE aha ... that explains it. Would a (big) flywheel be of any help?

It might. Hard to say without trying. The propeller acts as a flywheel

Bonjour, Not any steam leak, Persistance has a great compound ! What a pleasure it must be to navigate with her. Can you remind me your consumption / autonomy and your range without refueling ? And what could I say about her whistle, I am so jealous of its sound 😁 Amicalement, Raphaël

Bonjour Raphaël, Thank you always for your kind words. She truly is a pleasure. We steam her well over 1,500km/year, rain or shine. We would love to have you onboard if you ever find your way out here. We burn about 5 gallons of fuel per hour which equates to about 2.9km/litre. With our fuel capacity, we have almost 1,700km range with liquid fuel, and perhaps an additional 100-150km range with the wood we carry onboard.

@@WesleyHarcourtSTEAMandMORE As one gallon = 3,8liter the consumption per hour is about 19liter. (that seems plausible) If I calculate the speed from the metrical data you're giving you'd run at more or less 55km/hour (that seems impossible) -> 19 x 2,9 = 55,1 I suppose that you mean 2.9liter per km ... That means about 6km/hour speed ... and that amount seems on the low side (6km/h is the speed of a person walking fast but without running) I'm thinking that your boat is running at about 12km/h at full speed. Even capable of a tad more. So in the end ... give us "gallons" and "miles per hour" ... we'll do the conversion to metrical. 😀😀 Americans and metrical ... 🤣 never been good friends (and Europeans are not good friends with the imperial system 😂🙃
