As of Januaray 1st of this year, the famous Steamboat Willie short (which contains one of the earliest forms of Mickey Mouse) has joined the ranks of the public domain.
What this means is that pretty much anyone can use the character however they see fit (such as using Mickey as the villian for a horror movie...yes that really happened). I decided to give it a spin to see how it turned out, and I hope you guys enjoy my first Roblox Animation of 2024!

Man, I feel bad for Steamboat Willie. Hopefully he gets better treatment from the public than just becoming the latest horror mascot again (oh wait 😕)!

I mean Disney also took advantage of the public domain thats how we got Whinnie the Pooh(Not the book), Aladdin, Alice in Wonderland, and may other disney classics

@@Kamil_Kolejarz Winnie the Pooh Disney had to pay for, though they tried to get out of that one, but yes many other stories Disney got for free, Snow White, The Little Mermaid, etc. So yes, it is completely fair that we now get to have Mickey Mouse, or at least a version of him, more to come soon.

It's cool that we now have a new public domain on our hands, but the potraying of the character being a horror figure is maybe a bit unoriginal since Winnie the Pooh had that same treatment 2 years ago.

Maybe if that Winnie horror movie hadn't made 6 million dollars worldwide on a budget of just a few thousand dollars, then maybe they wouldn't have given Mickey the same treatment

Not to mention when Disney re-created Steamboat Willie using emojis, they changed the abuse to iPhone’s GarageBand animal sounds, which adds to the evilness, as to Mickey, they are just instruments to be used (that reminds me of a certain eye blooded hedgehog… BUT THAT’S BESIDES THE POINT!).

Steamboat Willie is name of the boat, not a character, in Steamboat Willie Mickey was already called Mickey, I feel bad for people not even caring about the original cartoon, but making things based on it, I feel like they didn't even watch it as in the beginning we can see clearly that the name of the character is Mickey Mouse

On a serious note here, people should be asking why it took 95 years for this cartoon to be in the public domain. Because Disney reaching with its power is dangerous. Especially with its power to lobby Congress into extending the copyright. People should force Disney to stop doing this. Because it could be dangerous for people that want to make creative stuff on the Internet. Like memes, their own stories, music, etc. And this is not just Disney, but every company on the planet shouldn't do this, period. But, at least Steamboat Willie is in the public domain now.

The last extension was important, as it allowed co-creators of the property to sue and get some of the profits that they left out of before, so I am okay with the latest extension, but I think that is it. I don't think we will make any more concessions, seeing that Steamboat Willie made it to public domain.
