I applaud you sir, it takes a real genius to figure these things out. I've always been fascinated by steam, but I'm no expert in thermodynamics.

wow that double 5a is pretty! Would love to see that doing work someday, either a small launch or machinery! All of them are beautiful, but that 5a has been one of my favorites you rebuilt!

Absolutely lovely boiler and engines. The Stuart beam engine looks odd without drain cocks though. The condenser on the second beam engine looks like the cylinder from a major beam. It was the video of you running another Stuart beam engine in your kitchen that prompted me to buy mine, beam engines are a personal favourite of mine.

Hi Keith well I decided as I am recovering after my total knee surgery I’ve been going over your videos and have decided to build stationary steam engines. I now know that I will never be able to build a ride on locomotive due to my health so I’ve decided to build stationary engines and I have started with a Number 7 mill engine so when I’m well enough I shall be starting it. Thanks mate I love watching them at home.

Hi John, glad everything went well with the knee repair. I used to ride around my garden railway, but I have done so much of it that the novelty has definitely worn off. I too like stationary engines. The Traction engine I have is nice though .......

Keith Appleton thanks mate yes I always had a love affair with stationary engines but as I said on day it will be the ultimate a 3” gauge traction engine. John PS your daughters a very attractive Keith do they take after their mother!

That Castle Steam boiler looks a nice bit of kit. And it's prettier than a Stuart when on display. Might have to look into it ...

I don't have much in the way of details other than it was a "Scotch Crank" type water pump model built by a friend of mine, the late Mr. Bernard Walker who was an excellent model engineer and made a lot of very interesting steam models

Please watch some more of my videos where most of the time I dismantle engines and rebuild them - you will then see inside the cylinders and the pistons of model steam engines . . . . . there are almost 900 of them now ......

Keith, this may be a daft question but hear me out. Some of these engines seem to be of a quite sturdy and powerful design. Other than running them for the enjoyment of watching them, is there any way they could be put to use (even a trivial use, like, let's say... a pencil sharpener) to get a slight load on the engine and have the satisfaction of watching steam-powered machines actually "do" something, if you know what I mean?
@keithappleton
@keithappleton 6 жыл бұрын
yes, even the small ones are quite powerful engines, they would drive miniature machinery or generate electricity via a dynamo or alternator - or drive water pumps etc .....
@BobMonkeypimp

On Redryder's videos, specifically when he films engine meets, I've seen miniature sawmills connected to model engines.

VehicularBrit I once saw a pencil sharpener powered by a Conley miniature V-8 engine, it would eat the entire pencil in a couple of seconds max. While this isn't related to steam powered models it's worth googling it, there's a photo of a similar setup that's pretty darn cool.

The 1" scale steam traction engines will pull along an adult male quite easily, even the smaller one's can pull along a small child under the right conditions. The larger 4" scale (1/4 size) will pull a car along!

It strikes me as a good idea to fit the clicky electric igniter bit from a gas lighter directly to the burner to make lighting it safer, does anyone make anything like that?
@BobMonkeypimp
@BobMonkeypimp 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can buy piezo barbecue lighter modules. Basically the clicky button & 2 wires.

Why isn't no one using this small steam engines for off grid solution. If only I have access to small steam engines and boilers I would surely go off grid with it.
@keithappleton
@keithappleton 4 жыл бұрын
No you would not -it is unrealistic. A steam engine boiler needs constant attention and these after all are model steam engines so they would wear out too quickly . . .

Now i want someone with too much money to build a small Titanic. Say about 130 feet long. Maybe it would attract enough tourists to make back some of the cost to build and operate it.

I love your work and I love this video, but for god's sake turn down the gas! Blowing the safeties off once or twice is bad unless you're testing them, and continuously is just bad firing. You waste allot of water and allot of fuel that way. It also makes allot of racket which is unnecessary. Please for future videos, run the gas pressure, or gas burner adequate enough to run the engine, but not continuously blowing the safeties off.
@keithappleton

Why not try the process yourself, operating a video camera manually to obtain professional video images whilst simultaneously running a miniature steam plant - also, in this video, as I clearly state in the narrative, I was testing and setting the blowoff pressure of the safety valves on this brand new, and previously never steamed "Castle Steam V6" boiler ........ maybe now you can see the futility of your comment . . . . . .
@24681359David
@24681359David 4 жыл бұрын
@@keithappleton No. I run the big engines as well as the small ones. Any fireman will tell you this is seriously frowned upon. This is a serious pet-peve of mine. Get the steam plant stable before shooting video of it! With a gas fired plant it's not all that difficult to accomplish.
