Watch part 1 here: • D.I.Y Cosplay Gas Mask...
This is the second part of my DIY steampunk gas mask tutorial. I show how I paint the mask, add the mesh for the eyes as well as the strap. Also, a quick little look behind the scenes. This is a really versatile pattern that allows you to make many different costume gas mask styles for cheap!
**When you are making a foam mask that fully encloses your face, you should let the foam and glue fumes dissipate for a few days before wearing**
*** This is a costume gas mask only and offers no actual protection**

Hello, your tutorials are incredible and interesting, but ... above all I think you are a FANTASTIC FATHER ... I wish I had a father like you, your children are not yet aware of the luck they have but I'm sure they will thank you for all the magic and madness in which they are growing. Thank you

Thank you so much. I had great parents who let me do all kind of making and experimental stuff growing up, and I am so thankful for that. I'm sad when I hear that people don't have that kind of encouragement as kids. But my hope is that they can be that for their children!!

Ok, I've got a few questions, not at all related to the crafting of those amazing mask. How did you convince your neighbors to get on your little short at the beginning? How did they react when you asked them? Whats next on your list of creations? A sword? A mechanical leg? Full body armor? Another mask design? Also, I noticed in one of your earlier videos, the knight helmet I believe, your family shot at you with nerf guns? Do you have any that you have modified into Steampunk guns and if so, can you show off how you do make them?
@LostWax
@LostWax 6 жыл бұрын
Hi! The people at the beginning are some of my good friends- I told them the basic idea of the video and asked if they'd like to be a part of it. They were happy to help me out:) I actually don't have my next major project planned yet, it would be nice to do something not too complicated so it wouldn't take so long to get it out . And, no I don't have any modded Nerf guns, I figured there are probably enough different videos out there showing how to steampunk a Nerf gun..... but I am always open to suggestions. Thanks for watching and commenting- it helps me out tons!
@russdykes6446

Lost Wax Also, relating to the knights helmet, did you make more armor for the chest, arms, and legs? That might be a good tutorial. And I think I’ve suggested swords a couple times. I’ve seen many people make them, but they require fiberglass or carbon fiber for the core to keep the weapon from flimsy. Any idea if there is a similar way to do make the sword prop that way that would not require going to a special supplier? PVC might work, but it would need to be a narrow diameter to work. Any ideas?
@LostWax
@LostWax 6 жыл бұрын
I've already fooled around a bit with swords, and, yes I might have some ideas....but I haven't got them totally figured out quite yet. Hopefully soon.

I was curious, Chris, whether you might consider uploading a video at HALLOWEENIE, detailing the bespoke costumes you design for your children. Perhaps this is too precious/private/intimate a subject to share...given that my own kids' costumes are truly ONE-OF-A-KIND....created from their visions...NO MATTER HOW "Impossible" the ideas seemed. For example "I wants (sic) to be a dithembodied (disembodied) Jack O wantern head, i-WOMB-inated (illuminated) fwum da INSIDE..FWOATING down da stWeet with no bisible signs of thupport". (He was LITTLE, perhaps 3 or 4) Impossible? NEWP. I can only IMAGINE what your kids..exposed to creativity such as yours, have envisioned AND what awesome costumes you have created for them. It would be so cool to share them...inspire other parents to HELP their kids (when they are too little to create intricate costumes themselves) and INSPIRE them to DESIGN their own costumes when they are less little and can create their OWN costumes, from fantastically "impossible" ideas. My son, when older wanted to be a "6 or 7 FOOT TALL monster with RED SKIN and a blue face with TONS of TEETH". He wanted to make stilts, but i thought that would be unsafe, so I bought him drywall stilts & let him walk around the inside of the house FOR MONTHS as he gained the SKILL to go out for Halloween. It. Was. So. Much. FUN.
@LostWax
@LostWax 6 жыл бұрын
Hi there! I have used parts of costumes I have made for my kids as patterns, but I have never recorded the whole process- usually because I just don't feel like I have the time to film as well as actually concentrate on making. The same reason I hardly ever film while I am designing a pattern- I kind of feel like I can't fully step into my creative mindspace when I also have to think about getting good footage. I love that you have made some sweet costumes for your children- they will keep those memories their whole life! Have fun making! -Chris

Thanks for this. Dumb question from a painting newbie looking for a quick start: do you wet your brush with water when painting the black undercoat, or is the brush dry apart from the paint? I heard you need to keep the brush wet to avoid ruining the brush with dried paint. The acrylic painting tutorials I've viewed so far seem to assume you know this stuff..

Would painter's tape work as well for avoiding overpainting? There are a few places on my Plague Doctor mask where the faux leather got schmeared w/ metallic luster.

I think it would work, just as long as whatever paint you are taping over is fully cured.

Love it! I wanted to ask one thing.. as in previous videos you have used rub n buff but in this one you used deco art paint.. which one do you recommend better and why? I used some other paste called "gold finger" which is like rub n buff paste, but it seems to fade from the piece over time.. :( could this deco art paint be the solution? :( ( I used on some jewelry piece )

Why don't you prime your pieces before you paint? Krylon makes craft foam primer; you'd end up using less layers of paint, and get a smoother surface.
@LostWax
@LostWax 6 жыл бұрын
I like to keep the number of things people need to buy, as well as expense for my projects to a minimum, so sometimes I sacrifice a slightly better outcome for ease/cost. I have primed my foam with different things, but I still end up giving two coats of paint anyways, so I just give three coats, and count the first one as the primer :) That being said, if there's an awesome product out there, I would definitely give it a try!
@beckymurphy4714
@beckymurphy4714 6 жыл бұрын
Well, that makes sense. I know a lot of cosplayers use PlastiDip to prime their craft foam props and parts; I haven't tried it yet, but Kamui Cosplay does a great comparison of different priming options. And...the creepiest four words: "Are you my mummy?"
