Stearic acid is totally awesome! Wanna know why? Let me take you back to a decade of poof bangs, frosted pink lips, Beverly Hills 90210, and of course Noxzema- a cleansing/moisturizing product chocked full of ummm...HEELLO! STEARIC ACID! Find out how this ingredient helps Noxzema and other products keep "their act together" as an emulsifier binding water/oil and acts as an opacifier (giving it a chalky white look).
Other roles of stearic acid not mentioned in video:
Surfactant
Stabilizer
********
Ms. B's Episode Notes/Errors/Omissions:
-Everyone makes mistakes from time to time. Sadly,I am no exception. When I make a whoopsie I list the correction here so you get the truth - no interrogation necessary.

I love how you not only provide great explanations in the video, but to all the questions in the comments as well. I wanted to ask if you'd consider doing a series on debunking (or in some cases, proving) Pinterest-type beauty fads? I see what sounds like bad "science" on there all the time, and hear a lot of people saying things about different trends that don't make any sense either chemically or biologically speaking. I'd be fascinated to see which ones are legit and which ones aren't, and hear a great explanation of the chemistry behind the answers. Keep making great vids! ❤️

+Kimberly Waggoner I think the universe is trying to tell me something! In the last two days, I had two others DM me the same thing. They' think there is way to much cosmetic bologna on the internet and want to see some debunking. I think it's a great idea! Especially with some the outrageous stuff you see on Pintrest! Thanks for reaching out and stay tuned! I will def be moving forward with this idea!

+msbeautyphile yay!! I can't wait for the vids on it! I've gotten in so many comment thread arguments with people who think coconut oil will cause their hair to grow faster and their split ends to grow back together it's not even funny... People get weirdly defensive over these fads. I love what you're doing with your channel and wish there were more people dedicated to knowing and sharing the science behind things.

+Kimberly Waggoner You know, the more I think about it, the more I'm totally excited about doing those debunking videos as well! Think they're going to be a lot of fun :) I want people to come to this channel with an open mind and willingness to learn (this goes for myself too). Science isn't instantaneous; it's a discipline. It also sometimes requires people to amend their views and understanding of the world. I think if everyone can be down with that, we can all stand to learn a lot :D Thanks for commenting!

Goodness.. Great video. Never seen such an entertaining video about stearic acid before. Can you tell me how did the stearic acid mix with water in high shear? Is it the H2O attached itself to the balance of 18C? And why did the stearic acid incorporated into water to form a cream does not hardened back into wax?

So are the ingredients ok for us to use ( the noxzema I mean ) ?.
@Msbeautyphile
@Msbeautyphile 9 жыл бұрын
loc'd&deeplyrooted Yes, Noxzema is totally safe to use, but there are a few things you need to consider: *If you're vegetarian or vegan, be aware the stearic acid in this product is sourced from beef tallow, which MAY be on your no-no list. *Some people find the smell of eucalyptus, menthol and camphor to be quite refreshing. Others have sensitive skin and will find this same combination irritating, so be careful if you fall into the latter category. Thanks for watching my vids!

Is stearic acid safe for our hair? For example if i put stearic acid in my home made hair cream.

Hafiz Parman Stearic acid is totally safe. People ingest a small % of this free fatty acid all the time it in the form chocolate, meat and butter. If you're putting it in a product, It could be acting as a co-emulsifier (helps the ingredients that brings oil and water together), which means, although not an emulsifier itself, it will help stabilize your formulation and make it thicker or stiffer. Generally, stearic acid is used at amounts of 5% or less and should have only a minor impact on pH at this level. If you're hittin' the right pH for your product, I say go for it!

I love me new 500 mg chewable vitamin C tablets. They also contain stearic acid. They also contain Fructose, I wonder why they put that in there, and what do you think about Fructose? Your video is fun to watch. I was laughing. I like the part where your voice changed into a man.

+James Toney HAHA. Glad you like my MAN VOICE. It's always nice to hear it's very becoming ;) To answer your question, fructose is added to Vitamin C for two reasons. (1) One is that vitamin C is very sour. This is because vitamin C is an acid. Fructose is added because it’s sweet. In fact it’s 1.73 times as sweet as an alternative sugar like sucrose. Without the the sweetness provided by fructose, you might might not be as motivated to take your yummy chewable every morning! Fructose also hold onto moisture better (hygroscopic) than some of the other sugars , so the chewable won’t crystallize and break apart. This means your chewable will have a decent shelf life in your cupboard or wherever you store them! Thanks for watching my vids!

Is it bad it in my moisturizer
@Msbeautyphile
@Msbeautyphile 8 жыл бұрын
Not at all. It's totally fine. Some people don't like it cause it's a cheaper skin conditioner and occasionally it comes from animals, not plants, but that's about it.

Because I got this moisturizer that say aloe vera sunflower hand and body lotion and it say cruelty -free and vegan but on the bac the ingredients has stearic acid how I'm suppose to know If it made out of animals or a plant

Companies don't have to disclose the source - so unfortunately there is no definite way of knowing aside from what the company claims. i.e. vegan. I know this is a big issue for a lot of my vegan friends. The best thing you can do in this case is go with a company you trust. You can reach out to the company and ask, but the answer depends on how knowledgeable the person manning the phone is about the product and how well they vet their raw ingredient suppliers.

Is it hydrophilic
@Msbeautyphile
@Msbeautyphile 8 жыл бұрын
+Lauregui It's both! Stearic Acid has got a hydrophobic (nonpolar) end that loves to glom onto oils and dirt in the body AND it has a hydrophilic end that takes the dirt/oils and whisks it away with the water. In the 1990's stearic acid was a more common ingredient in cleansers.

+msbeautyphile does that mean it's a surfactant?
@Msbeautyphile
@Msbeautyphile 8 жыл бұрын
+Kimberly Waggoner YES! Stearic acid is a surfactant, which means it uses its water-hating (hydrophobic)/water-loving (hydrophilic) properties to cleanse! The water-hating side, grabs onto the oils/dirt on the face and the water-loving side attaches to water molecules from the tap & whisks it all away! It is also an emulsifier and has moisturizing properties. Stearic acid is one hard working ingredient! I'll have to investigate a little further and see why it has fallen out of favor. It may be that it comes from animal sources and cost wise, it is pretty cheap. Maybe that's why?!?
