On a warm or hot day acetone will evaporate extremely fast, faster that you can wipe it and the dirt off, xylene is similar to acetone in it also leave no residue behind but doesn't flash off or evaporate as fast as acetone. This means that you will use less of it and get less fumes off it in the same time period. They are not the same chemical but for cleaning steel in preparation for painting they do the same thing.

Thanks, wasn't hot at the time. I have used acetone for years as a cleaning solvent when it was the appropriate or less dangerous solution.

Hi Brian What primer would you recommend and would it be paint on or spray on and did you use any sanding or flap discs to descale tnx.

I would like to paint an aquarium stand with oil based paint. Do i need to prime first before apply the oil based paint ?

it's a good idea. It's not required, but the paint will last alot longer if it's adhered properly. Primer will bond to the material, but isn't as durable.
