I was a sophomore at ND and in the student section at the northwest corner of the stadium. When Penick made the 85-yard touchdown run, it looked like he was running right towards us.

Fun facts - At Gilmour Academy (suburban Cleveland, OH), Eric Penick torched opponents on the ground. His lead blocker was a bruising fullback named Dave Janasek. Two weeks after the '73 USC game, the still-unbeaten Irish faced off against Pitt on the road, coming away with a 31 - 10 victory. It wasn't as easy as the score might imply. A freshman Panther running back named Tony Dorsett lit up the ND defense. However, in spite of 209 rushing yards, TD never crossed the goal line that day. In fact, the Panther's lone touchdown came on a one yard plunge by a bruising fullback named Dave Janasek!

@@timothymiller1783 One of my younger brothers went to Gilmour in the late 70s, but the rest of us went to the public high school. Penick was a multi-sport beast in high school. Gilmour captured the 1971 Ohio HS Div AA (medium size schools) State Track Championship. Penick won the 100, 220 and 440 yard dashes, racking up 30 team points for Gilmour. The next best TEAM score was 28 points! It's a pity his football career was cut short by a severe ankle injury his senior year at ND.

I was so thrilled that we had some football last year. Sadly, Cfb isn't the same it used to be (I grew up in the 80s and 90s) and started my fandom in 88 when Dad, a 74 alum, asked me if I wanted to watch the Michigan game. After watching Ricky Watters return a punt, I was excited for every Saturday after.

I have a Notre Dame pocket watch my grandfather found in the mud outside the stadium after a game in the 1920's. My grandfather was a Notre Dame graduate. The watch is in excellent condition. If anyone out there is interested in purchasing it, please let me know.

Not an ND fan, but I was at this game when I was young. I had good connections, so I was seated on the field bleachers on the North end zone in front of the student section. When Penick scored on that long run, he ran right toward me.

thats because this was before that stupid "no contact" after 5 yards penalty came into effect, a lot harder to pass back in those days, college follows the NFL rules, except for a few minor variations, and the nfl sold out in 1978 to get more people watching by making the game more "exciting" by giving the offense a big advantage in the rules

@@terrybangley2281 Everyone talks about parity in college football today. I am convinced that removing that one rule will immediately start to have said effect.
