The flat spot on the right side of the watch is the only issue. It makes it look like they repurposed a 3 o’clock crown case. Still gorgeous. Great review (as always).

I thought the same thing. That flat segment at 3 o'clock is just off, even if it is a direct rip from the source material.

Regarding the heavy AR coating, I can vouch: I originally for the green bc I thought it'd look good with the orange. However, under the sun/light, it is so AR'd that the green tales on a sickly Windex tint. I now have a black version, on which the AR looks kinda cool when it flashes blue. I have small fingers and agree, too, about that tiny, recessed crown. Not easy to access. That said, I like the look and thinness of this one, esp on a MN strap. Very comfy to wear, and my bezel lines up just right. A surprise in how far it has exceeded expectations. Am obscure clomage that I did t know I needed". Nice review, very thorough 👍

Just ordered these! The SD1979 flies under the radar of the SD1970. Really looking forward to reviewing this piece. Looks great on your wrist. 👍🏼

The blue dial is THE watch to get in this homage! Really a great built piece and the usual SD value and killer lume!

Agreed...blue AR would be a deal breaker on the other colors IMO

Bought this watch on a whim, and it’s become one of my daily wears. More people ask me about this, than almost any other watch I own - it’s such an obscure homage.

I really love the blue color they used on the dial and bezel, the bead blast case looks fantastic, if only the entire bracelet was bead blasted and an oyster as well would have really set this watch up as a top notch watch.

Apparently this thing rocks on a brown leather strap.....missed opportunity. But yeah, a bead blasted, tapering oyster would look awesome in this thing.

I have this once with the metal strap. I really like it but I wish but the sides were not so shiny, since it doesn’t really match the bead blasted case. It is heavier than my Seiko flight master, which is a good thing.I think it looks good on an olive NATO strap as well. Also the lume is amazing

I have the real thing in the polished case, and I originally had the blasted version, but sold it when I got the polished. It's one of my favorite watches! This one is larger than the real watch, and looks really cheap compared to the original. Then again, it is a lot cheaper! lol Great review as always, Steve!

How exactly does this look really cheap in comparison? I've handled one similar squale and it didn't seem like anything special, somewhere along the lines of a Tissot or upmarket Citizen in hand.

Can you please expand on your BS comment it looks cheaper. Because I have seen it on display and really did not see huge differences. We are waiting for your additional more in depth observations in its differences.

That's worthwhile buying. I dont usually go to a 42 but with the same size wrist as you I was impressed with how it sat on your wrist.

That is a fantastic looking Squale-esque Steeldive. I would love the original, but it is far beyond a pensioner’s budget. I wish I knew of this watch during the 11.11 sale!

Hello. I have a Seiko Recraft SRPC09 blue dial with a 22mm engineer bracelet like that Steeldive and a Steeldive black Captain Willard with a 20mm engineer bracelet and both of them look awesome. Nice review and new subscriber....cheers!.

This is a great watch!! It’s good to see companies thinking outside the box of homages! Not everyone wants a Submariner/Capt Willard/62Mas/Tuna homages. This one is my favourite (coz I own it) & looking to buy the SD1965 which is the Oris homage.

💯 agree. That said, I have all of those clomages except the tuna. But I'll say, this is the clomage that I did t know I needed/wanted. Love the bead blasting. Mine (edit: black) lives on a black Marine Nationale with a thin orange and grey stripes, and I reach for this one much more often than the other clomages.

Great review of a very interesting diver. Wish it had a highbeat movement, say PT5000 or 9015.

I'm always game for the lower price and an NH35. But I never complain with a PT5000 in the mix!

Have a black dial and bezel SD1979 on tropic band as per 1521 COSC. Wears comfortably. NH35 movement is accurate and reliable. Not many wear Squale so doesn't look as obvious as black dial black bezel SD1953 is for Rolex. Getting a Marine Nationale strap next to have orange pinstripe match min hand. Found the Engineer strap was bulky. Squale also fit mesh steel strap as well as tropic rubber strap that is less bulky as suits it. Not a bulky dive watch.

Love the design, but there are too many issues that need sorting, that odd flat area above the crown and the dull grey finish ruins it for me, as does the large gap between the strap and case (shorter lugs needed). Good, but certainly not great.

Such a great looking watch and bracelet, I wish there was a smaller version. 48mm lug-to-lug would be pushing it for me on the higher end (don't think I could go any bigger than my Casio Duro), 51mm would be too big.

On my wrist those lug's ends would scratch anything around my hand, the way they protrude. Maybe myself too. The sandblast steel though is excellently matched with this blue, which reminds me a lot of the Pelagos blue hue, somehow. So, if you like Squale an overall cheap alternative to consider. Thanks for the review mate, be well. PS Change the title mate, Setteldive is not a title to settle...

Why does everybody say 42 mm watches are so large? Perhaps a 45 mm is a little bit larger side.

It's on the larger size for me...but yeah, maybe I should stop saying that...lol. I just recently came across a 65mm monster, so. Size is all relative 🤣

I was wondering if the bezel alignment problem on my sd 1970 watch is also present in this watch. yes there is. I think all steeldive watches have it. After the click, it goes back a little and all the alignment is broken. I have watches with invicta and casio unidirectional bezels and they do not have this problem. I noticed this problem when I did a search on the internet and I was very surprised when I saw rolex, omega and seiko watches. I don't think this is rocket engineering

I think a lot at play with videos is the camera. Seeing with both eyes is easy, but seeing with 1 camera lense makes it difficult to capture. I can't remember whether this one was aligned or not, but I have some watches that appear perfect to my eyes but it's damn near impossible to get it to look right on camera. But yeah, it shouldn't be rocket science to get it aligned....I've done it myself and it came out perfect

I ordered this on a whim. blue dial. I had ordered the Seestern 600T blue dial, Doxa homage. And I have a Citizen BN151. too many blue dial watches. I feel I need to sell one. This one is striking, but mismatched to the bracelet. The Seestern has a definite nicer bracelet. This SD1979 would look good on a FKM orange strap. I probably would have ordered the Seestern in black dial or orange.

I've got the seestern in Orange with black bezel and its awesome. I LOVED the blue on this watch, but yeah, the bracelet just doesn't work. best suited on rubber or leather.

@@EscapeWheel I have an orange monster homage, so the seestern in orange feels like a duplicate. I like the orange minute hand, so if I would go back I would get the black version. Or will see if I will flip either the sd1979 or the 600t. Or maybe keep them both?

Basically is a nice watch and Steeldive watches don't disappoint for the money they're asking for but for some reason they made this watch even bigger than the original with a longer lug to lug distance sadly. In my opinion this watch could do with a silverish chapter ring.

I have tried many different setups and this yields the best results. I have seen the complaint before, so I am constantly trying to figure something out...but it never turns out as detailed as this setup.
